This little gem in the heart of Monferrato is the perfect place where to go to relax and enjoy the magic atmosphere. The hosts are incredibly passionate about the history of the family, very kind and welcoming!
We had an amazing stay at the Castello with Giuseppe as an excellent host. You literally walk through history and the guided tour (as well as the climb to the top of the tower) made us from time to time speechless. Sleeping arrangement was excellent, wifi is very strong. Breakfast is great. Giarole is a tiny place but with very good restaurants closely. Esp. the one in Occimiano (Ristorante el Moro) is truly excellent! Giarole is well situated if you want to visit the bigger cities like Torino and Genua. Ask Giuseppe; he will provide you with enough information what to do. We had a great time there and we'll back again, for sure!
Castello Sannazzaro B&B Giarole, Monferrato, Italy BREATHING THE FEUDAL AMBIANCE In 1986, he inherited this 45 room 12th century chateau; ten years later, he decided to give up his financial career and live in the stronghold, located in Giarole (Alessandria) a 700 souls village of which he is also deputy mayor. Simultaneously, he and the wife Letizia started to transform the chateau Sannazzaro which belonged to the Sannazzaro since 1163, in a B&B with 6 rooms available, all year round. Count Giuseppe Sannazzaro Natta (known in his entourage as “Giose”) welcomes the guests at the gate where 2 Abruzzese shepherd dogs are cheerily barking from the underneath dry moat of the chateau. On the left side, one barely notice that one of his black and white cats is comfortably sleeping in the ancient stairs that lead to the baroque little church. That is the cosy private catholic church of the chateau where the guest may think to get married with the sweetheart who dare to sleep with him in this austere medieval place. Giose does not disdain to carry the baggage and take you to the room in this maze of stairs, passages and vestibules. We preferred the Blue room facing the courtyard which appeared to be less sombre that the bigger canopy one. The walls are really thick. The silence of this place is thick as well. At night, any little noise may lead to the scaring feeling of a ghost. Seemingly, there are 4 of them who are happily cohabiting with Sannazzaro Natta family and obviously…with the guests. Even if the rooms are equipped with wi-fi, this is an ideal place to grab a book and just finish it away from any real world information or fake news. To us, this has been a great medieval experience and chateau Sannazzaro is an ideal location to explore Monferrato, the district known for excellent wines (Barbera, Dolcetto, Nebbiolo), sophisticated gastronomy (Brasato al Barolo and Coniglio all’Astigiana) and the local hazelnut. Giose thank you for taking care of us. Expect that our friends will visit the chateau Sannazzaro soon. Again thank you also for the nice homemade cakes, awaiting us for breakfast. In this age of hi tech, hard edge modernity with its pristine surfaces and minimalist colour charts, what a pleasure it is to have found an environment, not only blessed with the patina of age on its ancient brick facades but also to find at almost every turn, an item of furniture, a painting, a fresco, a modest tiled floor, all of which come together to make Castello Sannazzaro a unique environment that basks in its own history. Combine this with a comfy and generous sized double bed, a sumptuous breakfast and a genial and gregarious host and you will find you have enjoyed the ultimate B and B experience. we will return - hopefully many times.
It is a real gem! You are hosted by the owners of this amazing castello which preserves the charm of the medieval ages. Giuseppe Sannazaro was very kind to come from Genova for half a day to make a tour around the castle for us. One of our best experince while travelling in Piedmont and Lombardia!
