Today I visited the Dawson Falls cafe with my 86yr old mother. We drove from Opunake for an outing hoping to sit in a cosy cafe. Instead it was a big, very cold cafe. I had forgotten to take my jacket so asked along with some other guests if we could sit in the adjoining restaurant area to have our afternoon tea. The lady serving us talked to the Manager. A lady and her husband appeared. I will have to say that they were extremely unfriendly and unwelcoming. We asked if we could please sit in the restaurant area where it would be warmer for my mother, myself and the few other guests. Their reply was a firm NO as they didn't want to disturb their guests. They said that we could normally sit in the room near the counter in the cafe which would be warmer but because of Covid 19 this wasn't allowed. There was a fireplace in there but although freezing, the fire wasn't on.I asked about a heater in the area where we were sitting and that couldn't be done. My elderly mother and I sat in the freezing cafe and drank our hot drinks quickly and left. As we left wr looked into the empty restaurant area. Never again will I go there in cold weather! A wasted afternoon.

I’ve only one piece of advice: Be sure to allow time just to be IN your room - if you’re out hiking your entire visit you’ll miss the real magic of the woods that are indoors. I adore this place and we will definitely be back to just ‘hang out’!

This was a spur of the moment decision after finishing a journey on the Whanganui River - arrived only a couple of hours after booking. The hotel is approached by an impressive drive through thick bush where the trees meet overhead - a green tunnel. The hotel was opened in the 1890s and, although modernised, still has many original features and has the atmosphere of a Victorian mountain lodge. There are superb views of the mountain from some rooms and several walking tracks start from right outside the hotel gate. Our room was clean and comfortable and there was an excellent breakfast. Service was friendly and efficient. There were many interesting books for guests to read but I did not notice if there were any for children. I would gladly stay here again.

The lodge is in a great location, halfway up mount Taranaki, with lots of walks starting just outside the front door. The rooms are decorated in Swiss mountain style - lots of carved wood. The bathrooms could do with updating (though great to have a bath, with lots of hot water!) but the beds are very comfortable and the views are fantastic - you feel like you could reach out and touch the mountaintop. Large lounge to hang out in. Food was well cooked, although menu was very limited - just 4 mains to choose from, which reduces choice if you stay several nights (we stayed 3) . Also portion seemed to vary - some meals were huge, others quite small. Service was leisurely, but then there was nothing else we'd rather be doing, so it didn't matter. Breakfast was functional, but not imaginative - we would have paid more for greater choice (eg a cooked option)

My family of four had a wonderful night at Dawson Falls Mountain Lodge. Our room was lovely with a small sitting area and deck, and our dinner was fabulous. All staff were lovely and kind - Donna in particular was incredibly hospitable. The location of the lodge is superb, nestled on the side of Mt Taranaki amid rainforest, with stunning views and beautiful walks. The only problem was that our stay was too short - we will definitely be back. One of our most favourite places.
