ALEGRIA Colonial Mar is a hotel that earns praise for its spacious, clean rooms with modern touches and sea views, as many guests appreciate. While the hotel's location is somewhat isolated, its beach proximity is a highlight for travelers seeking a quiet getaway. The atmosphere is family-friendly, complete with nightly entertainment, although the pools may be on the cooler side.
Service quality varies, with commendations for the staff's friendliness but some concerns over slow check-ins and communication. Cleanliness is a strong point, despite minor maintenance issues.

Detailed Reviews
Looking at the previous reviews I was a bit unsure as to whether the hotel was going to meet our needs, however it certainly did - we are a family of 4 travelled JET2 from Manchester on the Thursday evening flight. We got to the hotel about 10.50pm checked in and they had some food all ready for us. It is €10 euros each payable by cash for the All inclusive wristbands, which you get back at the end of the holiday.
It was evident when we arrived at the hotel that it was primarily Spanish customers that used the hotel.
I would recommend that you stock up on water before you get there as the bar does close at 11pm!
We had a classic double room, it was clean, there was fresh towels and bedding every other day, but they will change them if you ask at reception, safety deposit box at €15 euros for the week and a fridge to use.
1 large swimming pool, one smaller one hidden around the back and one for toddlers which was great, large slides in the big pool and an inflatable octopus for the smaller children.
Entertainment was mainly in Spanish, but I can’t speak highly enough of the ‘happy team’ they really encouraged my children to take part and translated all the activities into English for them, the Spanish children were all so lovely with my youngest daughter and helped her too (she’s only 4), she won certificates for taking part which was lovely. There was a kids mini disco 9.30-10.15 every evening, although late for us usually, although all in Spanish our kids did enjoy it and as we were on holiday we weren’t too bothered by the times, but may be quite late for little ones. The main entertainment started around 10.30 pm and there was a different act on each evening.
The food was amazing and was so much choice for all meals, breakfast, snacks, lunch, more snacks and dinner, all had lovely fresh meals & breads, the cakes were also fab too!! I would recommend getting to the canteen at the earliest times as it does get busy and queues to get in.
There isn’t much to do out and about, but there is a lovely walk along to Roquetas itself, the beach is on th doorstep of the hotel, we didnt use as it was shingle, but there was sunbeds which had parasols all ready on there if you wanted to go there for the day. There is a large shopping arcade with some fab shops and restaurants around 10-15 minutes walk away, we ate out there one evening and went to an Italian called tagliatelle which was lovely.
The area is quiet and not a lot of people speak English, but they do try.
The only downsides about the hotel are; they weren’t able to provide a late check out, although they did have somewhere to store our cases for the day, they gave us a courtesy room for half an hour which was diabolical, I wouldn’t have kept my dog in there, but it was only so that we could get a shower and change ready for our flight home. There was a man who was quite rude on reception as we did ask if we were able to have an extra 10 minutes or so as there was 4 of us! He was the only rude member of staff for the whole time and it was the first time I saw him, all the other staff members were lovely. The card states that you are able to have cocktails included in the All inclusive package, but when I asked for one they were €4.50, I didn’t mind paying as I don’t drink much, but that should be stated in the information pack!
Overall a lovely holiday in a quiet location and really well fed!

Went as a group of 3 families, with 5 kids ranging from 4yrs to 9 and we had the best time!!
Location is great, approx 30 mins from airport by transfer.
We never had a problem getting sunbeds, always plenty of space - it does get busy over the weekends with extra Spanish people but it wasn't a problem, Even on the water slides, they are well managed.
We always managed to get 2 tables at meal times to accommodate the adults (6) and kids (5) it does get busy the later you go, we found the Spanish like to eat later and all at once so did have busy times, but this was explained in a slip on check-in and also posters around the hotel and lifts.
The hotel is very Spanish - But you are in Spain!! They only spoke English when they needed to.
Rooms are clean, spacious and newly refurbed.
All inclusive stops at 11pm - then you can have drinks at 50% - depending on the waiter serving you, depends on the price paid - some gave the discount, others didn't
The aqua-fit in the morning is something to take in! AMAZING to watch, not to be missed!
Over-all a great place to holiday with kids, we have loved this hotel and all it had to offer us. Highly recommend.

Dear Guest Thank you for sharing your detailed review of your recent stay with us! We’re thrilled to hear that you and your group had a successful holiday and enjoyed your time at our hotel. It’s great to know that the pool and slides were a hit with the kids, and we’re pleased that the lifeguards helped everyone feel safe and secure while having fun. We’re especially glad to hear that the entertainment team made such a positive impact on your stay—Denis and the rest of the team will be delighted to know how much their energy and enthusiasm were appreciated by both the kids and adults alike! We also appreciate your understanding of the Spanish-oriented schedule and offerings. It sounds like you embraced the local culture and made the most of your time here, which is fantastic. We’re happy that the variety of buffet options, including the themed nights, catered to your group’s tastes. Thank you for choosing to stay with us, and we hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back Miguel Ángel Piedra - GM Alegría Colonial Mar

Spent Whitsun week here, Tuesday-Tuesday, 2 adults, 2 children(12 & 10).
The positives, the hotel is good, facilities are good, big pool, 5 waterslides, inflatable waterslide, small children’s play area. A football 5-a-side pitch, volleyball court, go out of the back gate, and your onto the promenade and beach. The room had 2 double beds, balcony, a nice bathroom, the maids cleaned most days and provided you with fresh towels. The restaurant was clean, tidy, bright, airy and of a good size. The waiters/waitresses were regularly collecting plates, glasses and keeping the area as clean as they could. Show cooking at the bottom of restaurant, doing fresh meat and fish.
Although not a negative, the choice was rather limited, and the fresh meat was generally always pork and fish, which if you don’t like(like me), was a struggle at times, if you like them, fill ya boots!!! There was no separate kids area for them, so they had to delve in along with the adults. Plenty of fresh fruit, ice cream, salads to eat, the snacks in between meal times were ok, burger n chips, or sandwiches. The showroom bar was big enough but could do with a bit of TLC.
Location, 10 minute walk from the gran plaza shopping centre, not much else around, had a taxi twice into the urbanized area, which was a bit busier.
The only real negative, I was aware it was a mostly Spanish resort, like their Devon. I wasn’t aware that they had a holiday period also, Tuesday/Wednesday was quiet, then the Spanish holiday makers arrived, stopped till sat/sun. To say they are rude, ignorant, obnoxious, is an understatement, and they certainly don’t know how to queue. Constantly pushing in, barging past you, one lad around 18 just kept spitting everywhere, disgusting!!
Overall, a good holiday in the sun, but slightly tainted by the rudeness of the Spanish holidaymakers….

Dear Guest Thank you for taking the time to share your experience from your recent stay with us during Whitsun week. We're glad to hear that you found our hotel facilities, including the pool, waterslides, and proximity to the beach, to be enjoyable. It's also great to know that your room met your expectations and that our housekeeping team kept things clean and comfortable for you. We appreciate your feedback on the restaurant, and we're glad you found it clean and well-maintained. However, we understand that the food selection could have been more diverse, especially for those with specific preferences. Your comments on the variety of meats and the lack of a separate kids' area are noted, and we'll look into how we can improve these aspects to cater better to all our guests. We're sorry to hear that your experience was somewhat marred by the behavior of other holidaymakers. We aim to provide a pleasant environment for all our guests, and we regret that this impacted your stay. Thank you again for your feedback. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and provide an even better experience. Best regards, Miguel Ángel Piedra - GM Alegría Colonial Mar

The hotel is fantastic to go with children; entertainers are super fun and aquagym classes with Tania and Manuel are a must.
The total stone beach; escarpments fully recommended.
If you want to leave the hotel there is only a shopping center walking about 15 minutes and a small walk next to the beach for sports or walking. It parks seamlessly at the door of the hotel first and last thing of the day without having to pay.
On Thursdays there is a very large market next to the hotel.
The buffet is spectacular; all kinds of breads, fruit, desserts... The staff was constantly replenishing the food and there is an area where they do everything to you at the moment; totally recommended.
If you do not want to drink from the tap, you can buy the bottles of cold water from one liter to 1 euro in the gift shop opposite the hotel; in the hotel they are worth 2.20 euros...
I stayed on the first floor overlooking the pool and I have to say it was all very clean but I think they need the rooms a good renovation because they are somewhat old; the rest of the hotel I don't know how it will be...
All employees (waiters, cleaners, entertainers) were very friendly throughout.
The animation very varied every day and with minidisc every day for the little ones.

The very repetitive food is saved because it was good, none themed in any of the seven days. For children little variety in food. The drinks in TI, all the cocktails were juice with juice, no mojitos or other cocktails and on top of white brands.
The old rooms, the cistern kept pouring water, we had to give it twice to stop. The worst part is that they wanted to charge us 25€ every day, for a renovated room something I don't see fair. Since the rooms had broken glass, the bathtub was scary, it looked like you were going downstairs, drains rusting...
On the first day there were no hammocks, when we caught them they were broken to see that if you neglected you gave a pinch, you had to get up at 8:00 and with the towel in hand and take hammocks. One day since 10:00 we were in the pool three hammocks caught with towels and appeared at 16:00 and people without hammocks.
I think it's a deception, because the price you pay you think you get everything and you don't, if you want something normal with a normal room and a good cocktail (mojito, daikiry....) you have to pay. Just go to another one that pages the IT a little more, but you don’t have to be with your wallet in your hand.

It is one of the best hotels I have been to in Almería.
When I arrived at the hotel, the very kind lady at the reception offered me a renovated room for a supplement of €20 for two nights, which I gladly accepted. Room 464 was very good, the breakfast was very good, the dinner was excellent, the waiter service was very good. Friendly and also the cooks.
Everything Excellent

Good entertaining and fun vacation. Notable: the animators who worked very hard and were super friendly. My daughters have been delighted! Especially with Denis, ionela, Tania, Manuel, Nacho and the "boss" who I don't remember her name, they made games for adults too and then we won diplomas that they gave out after dinner. Mini disc for the little ones and shows afterwards quite entertaining. The pool cool, clean and with plenty of lifeguards. The room that touched us with old furniture and some broken things like the slats of the sofa bed that had the sleeping babes and the ceiling fan, the cleanliness left enough to be desired. the buffet quite warm although little variety (I lacked fish quality on the griddle) and some more toaster for breakfast. I didn’t like the amount of spiciness they made to some foods that remained inedible like soup or purees. To highlight the attention of Encarni who cared a lot for neither daughter who is celiac having something ready in the kitchen for her and also of Germán who if necessary took it from inside so that there was no cross contamination. I recommend all inclusive.

The hotel is amazing. The rooms are so spacious with lots of up-to-date mod cons like kettle flat screen tv which also has English channels which is amazing for the kids and a hairdryer. Very very clean and tidy and the rooms get cleaned every day to a very high standard. The restaurant is also very clean with great food choices to cater for even the most pick eaters like myself. The pools are a big size abit cold on the cooler days but are highly appreciated on the very hot humid days. The kids loved the slides and the entertainment especially the entertainment staff. They made the holiday for my boys always making the effort to get them involved in each day activities and allowing my boys to take part in the adult games to as my eldest is abit quite and doesn't like going to the kids clubs. Manu was the key part to my family holiday he made so much effort with my kids and myself bringing us all out of our comfort zone would definitely recommend and be returning

Amazing hotel, and only gutted we didn't book longer! Spent a week mid July with 3 kids 7, 5 and 15m.
Hotel is big but there was never any issues with sunbeds, even when we didn't make it out until 11. Food was limited and typical AI but there was always chips, pasta, sauces, bread, meats etc so noone starved. Ice lollies and slush available for the kids. Entertainment wasn't great and started quite late (930) but the kids enjoyed it, animation team made a huge effort with all kids and ensured ours felt involved even if they didn't understand the language. Kids made plenty of friends and weren't as bothered by the language barriers as they expected to be. Pool was slightly smaller than pictures make it out and not overly deep but it never felt crammed and the slides were a great addition. Beach is rocky not sandy and does get deep quite quickly but had a fab time paddling and splashing in the waves. Beds were by far the comfiest we've ever stayed in with a decent mattress and pillows. Rooms were large, clean and modern. A lot of rooms had at least a partial sea view from what I could tell. Cot bed was included free of charge. Jet2 rep was available most days and very helpful. Hotel staff couldn't do enough, and even the cleaner we had spoke and understood some English.
Only reason we haven't booked to return next year is the price has soared to over 2k more than we paid for this week 🙁
