It is so small that only a fifteen-minute drive separates the stunning Caldera coastline with its iconic white cave houses from the “unfashionable” side of the island, where the Blue Bay Villas are situated.
We booked a room there, knowing very little about the island, on the basis of price and Trip Advisor reviews.
We were not disappointed. The villas which sit on the shoreline between the holiday town of Kamari and the village of Monolithos, are everything its website boasts.
The rooms are not huge, but are beautifully, if simply decorated with copious wardrobe space, large (for Greek standards) bathrooms and balconies/terraces boasting iconic blue tables and chairs. Our room had a sea (and pool) view, making its balcony the perfect place to relax with a glass of Santorini’s excellent local wine.
The pool shimmers in the sunshine and the striped loungers with their perfectly spaced sunshades are reminiscent of a Hockney painting during his California period.
The beds are comfortable, the host welcoming and informative and every corner of the hotel is spotless. Even the proximity to the island’s airport is not a problem.
There are some downsides. The location, next to a couple of larger hotels, is not great. There is a shop, with and outdoor café (Louis Market) a two-minute walk away and there are a couple of beachside tavernas close by. Mario’s (turn left on the beach and keep walking) is by far the best of the two. But that’s about it, so if you are looking for variety, coffee shops, bars and a bit more life, then hire a car. We got a great deal (80 euros for three days) in Kamari – a great little town only half an hour walk away. And a car gives you the freedom to explore Santorini, which is quite stunning, and not just in how it looks. Its history and its cuisine mark it out as a special place to stay. Be warned, taxi rides are not cheap – it seems that every journey, five minutes to the airport or fifteen to Fira costs 12 euros.
The breakfasts at the Blue Bay Villas are its weakest link. That may sound a bit mealy mouthed, but when there is no alternative but your hotel for the first meal of the day, breakfast really does matter.
The selection of bread, jam, yoghurt and honey, tea and coffee, is basic enough, but what makes it worse is the quality of the produce. Everything is from a value range, from the tasteless bread to the additive laced spread, masquerading as jam. We supplemented this dreadful fare with tomatoes, cheese and olives, and I suggest you do the same. There is a fridge in every room, so storing a few added extras is easy.
That said, we would recommend the Blue Bay Villas as a a good value and pleasant base to explore this most wonderful island.
Great staff! Very clean hotel! Big pool!
breakfast simple but good, perfect coffee!
Close to the beach. Close to the airport. Close to fira!
We had a very nice time there.
We will go there again for sure!
I swam in the nearby beach and it was clean and refreshing - I liked it a lot.
I really enjoyed my breakfasts here. They were simple and fresh and delicious. They make great filter coffee and the Greek yogurt is silky and creamy.
The only slight downside would be that there is sometimes a slight smell in the bathroom which I think comes from the plumbing. Just open the bathroom window and it will go away. Also I couldn't get the wifi working but I did not bother to follow this up (the owner would have helped me) because I didn't really want to spend my time being online.
Overall I feel great about my time here and would definitely return.
The room itself was a decent size but had a terrible smell we couldn't get rid of. Breakfast was appalling - I'd never seen such a poor selection of items, actually, and the little that was available was of dismal quality. The orange juice was just disgusting, the bread was stale and the butter and yoghurt were not fresh. Both of us were ill most of our time in Santorini, and I am quite tempted to believe this was due to the poor hygiene of the breakfast, which was served in the reception room of the hotel which was also used as a kitchen and a bedroom from what seemed to be the mother of the owner/manager...
Although there was a pool bar which could have helped create an atmosphere in the pool, it was closed for the whose duration of our stay. The pool itself was good but it was impossible to relax by it as we were constantly disturbed by the planes taking off literally above our heads...
My advice: don't stay there!
She gave us a room on the one floor up and every time we had to carry baby stroller through stairs.
Breakfast - anyone booked here, please dont think that you have something to munch on in the mornings as the variety is so less that you are forced to feed yourself if you are the breakfast person.
Swimming pool is good but has to have a bar which is always closed and the reason unknown.
The funniest part was, when I went and asked that the room doesn't look like the one showed on the internet, she bluntly said "thats for internet"
Beach is close by so you can relax there and maybe (just maybe) as a couple you will be OK here but family - I wouldn't even bothering rating.
Good thing was that the hotel was close to the beach. But there is nothing around. No stores and not many restaurants.
"Both rooms had great points about them. I think any room at this villa would be excellent!"Read full review
