Nestled in Monteverde, the Monteverde Lodge is lauded for its prime location, with guests enjoying its proximity to local attractions like Saint Elena and the Cloud Forest, despite a challenging hill. The hotel's atmosphere and cleanliness receive high marks for their tranquility and eco-friendly approach, offering a serene escape with lush gardens and spotless surroundings.
While the service is generally celebrated for its warmth, some guests have noted occasional delays, particularly by the pool. The amenities, including personalized balconies and heated pools, are popular, though opinions on value and room size vary, with some feeling the costs outweigh the benefits.

A really nice boutique hotel in lovely grounds. We stayed in a Tucanet room on the ground floor. The room was very modern with doors opening to a small decked area with a little stream in front. There were no outdoor chairs provided but there were 2 very comfortable armchairs just inside the patio doors so you could sit and relax. The hotel is very eco responsible so they provide a bottle of water rather than plastic that you could refill from the tap and they also provided recycling bins in the room. There is no TV which was not a problem for us but they did have air conditioning. My only niggle about the room is that the only space to store clothes was a shelf in the bathroom and along with the steam from a shower and the general cloud forest atmosphere our clothes always felt a bit damp. The quality of the bedding and towels were the best I have used anywhere and the breakfast was great. They bring you a plate of fruit and toast and then you can choose something from a menu including omelettes, pancakes, French toast etc. A five minute walk from the hotel there is a commercial centre with a number of shops and cafes so a great place to find some lunch if you don’t want to eat in the hotel and about another further 5 minute walk there is a small town with plenty of restaurants for an evening meal. We didn’t see much wildlife around the hotel apart from a few Monkeys playing in a tree by the pool one day but it did rain a lot while we were there so maybe they were sheltering. Overall a very nice hotel for a few days stay

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review! We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay in one of our Tucanet rooms and appreciated our eco-friendly initiatives. We take pride in providing a serene and comfortable experience, and it’s wonderful to know that you found the room modern and the bedding and towels of high quality. We appreciate your feedback about the storage space in the bathroom. We’ll look into ways to improve this aspect to ensure a more comfortable stay for our guests. We’re also glad you enjoyed our breakfast options at our El Jardin Restaurant and found the nearby commercial center convenient for lunch and dinner. Our location is secluded yet close to the attractions of the area! While the weather may have kept some of the wildlife at bay, we hope you had the chance to experience the beauty of the cloud forest. Thank you for choosing Monteverde Lodge & Gardens for your stay, and we hope to welcome you back for another memorable visit!

This piece of tranquil paradise was just what we needed to unplug and connect as a family. The lodge is clean and the staff were all friendly and helpful. This truly is a special place! We booked tours through the resort which was very easy to do though we may have paid more going this route. Undoubtedly the best guide took us through the Monteverde Cloud Forest. If you have a chance to take the guided tour, ask for Jairo Rodriguez! He’s incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the area. Our kids (ages 11 and 14) were so engaged in the tour and we all learned so much! The kids even thanked me multiple times for booking the tour because they enjoyed it so much. It was the perfect morning! The staff at the lodge are all so kind and personable that they added to an overall very special experience. Rooms are kept clean with service during the day plus a bonus turndown service in the late afternoon. We really appreciated this extra touch as we typically returned wet and/or dirty from our various adventures and appreciated our room was clean.

What a lovely hotel! The setting the decor and the amenities all make this hotel a great place to stay in Monteverdi. The hotel is located just on the edge of town, down a quote driveway, but walkable to the restaurants and shops. The rooms Are spacious and our family room down stairs were very nicely decorated with quality bedding and furniture. There was a stream outside our doors, which you could view the wildlife and relax. The bathroom was lovely with nice toiletries and bathrobes etc. The food in the restaurant on the terrace was fantastic! Breakfast was made to order and such a high standard! We even ate one meal there, and it was very high level cuisine… with. View. The hotel grounds are very well kept with a small pool and lovely walking trails, acoutis and coatis visit most mornings. I can’t recommend this hotel enough!

We visited for three nights as part of our honeymoon trip to Costa Rica and entering the hotel feels like an oasis of calm. The hotel and the rooms are bright and airy and very tranquil. The staff are all lovely and the included breakfast was delicious. The location of the hotel is also fantastic with easy access to the Cloud Forest and Saint Elena is only a five minute walk away. There is a large supermarket very close to the hotel and the town has all amenities you could need.

Although the lodge seemed to have been recently updated, there were many issues that still needed addressing. There were buckets and towels throughout the facilities (in the lobby, the vivarium and in our room - they had to offer us a different one) due to the roof leaking. The room we had was quite small with not a lot of place for luggage and nowhere in the bathroom to hang our clothes to dry. As for the grounds, the gardens were beautiful but the main trail was closed. The food was good and we appreciated that breakfast was included but music was annoying. Was disappointed at times with the service and lack of attention to detail. For example, before our arrival we were asked to provide information about ourselves, including food allergies. Upon our arrival, we were offered a mix of fruit juices, which contained one of the fruit we had explicitly stated one of us had an allergy to. The hotel was nice but really overpriced, we were also charged about 20 USD more per night than I was quoted when I called. We paid slightly less for our previous hotel and it had much better amenities and service. Would not stay here again.

Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback with us. We deeply regret that your stay did not meet your expectations and that there were multiple areas in which we fell short. Regarding the room size and storage limitations, we are sorry to hear that it didn’t provide the comfort and convenience you were hoping for. Our team is reviewing our room layouts and the feedback from guests to make improvements where possible. We are also disappointed to learn the oversight with the fruit juice, which contradicts the level of attention to guest preferences we strive to maintain. We sincerely apologize for this mistake and will address it directly with our team to ensure it does not happen in the future. We truly appreciate your feedback as it helps us to improve our services and ensure a better experience for future guests. We do hope you enjoyed the rest of your time exploring Monteverde and wish you safe travels in the future.

We had a wonderful time at this hotel. The grounds are beautiful and immaculate with short, well-kept trails that make for a nice morning walk with coffee or something to do while waiting for teenagers to get ready =) The staff was incredibly helpful in assisting us to create an itinerary that would make the most out of our 2 days in Monteverde. The food at the restaurant was surprisingly good - we especially recommend the bean stew for dinner (if you like vegetarian food) and the lava cake for dessert! Our room was clean and bright and the beds were comfortable. We were also pleasantly surprised to discover that our room opened to a small patio with a beautiful trickling stream! The pool was a nice, comfortable temp for swimming even on an overcast day. The hotel is in a great location, within walking distance of shops and restaurants and centrally located for making excursions to nearby sites (within 20 minutes of the Biological Preserve, Selvatura Adventure Park and El Tigre Waterfalls). As far as food goes, check out The Open Kitchen Monteverde for some delicious chocolate cake and the adjacent shop for a great selection of jewelry and other gift items. Great hotel - we would definitely come back.

Overall, our three-day stay at Monteverde Lodge and Gardens was good. The spaciousness and cleanliness of the room with a view of the forest (Mountain Gem), the good breakfast and friendly restaurant staff are definitely the positives of this hotel. Distance to the village with cafés and restaurants is walkable in 10-15 minutes.
However, the room was quite noisy (near restaurant and corridor) and the pool and pool area were dirty (and thus unusable). The garden looks nice but the garden furniture was dirty as well. For us a no no for a 4* hotel of that price. We raised this but no one seemed to act upon it. Also, the reception staff weren't as helpful as you would expect regarding activities unless you book a tour through them.
The main restaurant area lacks in atmosphere, that's why we didn't eat there.
We stayed in less expensive hotels in Costa Rica and had a much better experience, especially in terms of reception and facilities.

Daniela, we appreciate your comments and feedback regarding your stay at our lodge. We are glad that you enjoyed your Mountain Gem room and views of our gardens, our breakfast and our friendly staff. Our lodge is located within walking distance of the town of Santa Elena, yet we are in a secluded area, surrounded by lush gardens. Regarding our lawn furniture and pool, we are in a cloud forest, with high humidy and winds during this time of the year, causing leaves to fall in the pool. Our maintenance crew cleans it daily but we will increase the frequency on a daily basis. We only offer tours with companies that comply with the standards and policies required by our lodge. However, we never refuse to collaborate with a guest. If a guest wants an activity that we do not offer, we will help by putting both parties in contact and the guest can book it directly. We do hope that you ha a great time exploring the unique cloud forest of Monteverde!

We stayed in a Mountain Gem suite which was modern and fresh, minimalist design and rather “seasidey”! Close to reception and a water dispenser for both cold water and hot for making tea in the room. A coffee machine in the room. We walked the meandering paths in the grounds. The food was good and the restaurant (open plan with the kitchen) both elegant and casual, the same bright, modern design with open doors to the terrace, and a fire in the evening. Staff very pleasant.

This hotel was one of the best hotels my husband and I have ever stayed at. Let’s start with the room. Simple but comfortable, it had everything we needed. We stayed in the Motmot suite and had a corner room with a balcony that looked over forest area. Wow, what a view! We unfortunately didn’t see much wildlife for the first two days but on our last morning there was a group of Emerald toucanettes calling and hanging out in the trees just in front of the balcony! The bed was comfortable, shower was great, and we slept with the sliding doors open to listen to the wind in the trees and all of the crickets ( you’ll have screen doors as well- which the front desk will advise you to keep closed to keep bugs out. But we went in January and the overnight temps were in the 50s so we didn’t see any mosquitos at all).
The groups are absolutely beautiful, and they maintain the short trails well. There is an orchid room with probably around 50 gorgeous orchards that you can sit in.
Highly recommend eating dinner at least once at this hotel- but everything we had here was delicious!
And lastly, I have to mention the staff. Everyone we spoke with was so warm and friendly. From check in to check out- the entire staff was so amazing I just had to mention it.
Overall, this hotel is higher in price, but I can honestly say it is worth it if you are looking for a hotel that is quiet and comfortable with incredible views and close to everything!

We were lucky enough to spend 4 days at this beautiful hotel and absolutely loved it! Our room was looking into the garden and every morning we could see and hear birds like toucans, and see animals like agoutis just steps away from our room in the garden. We slept with our doors slightly open enjoying the fresh air and all the amazing sounds of nature. Everything was spotless and staff so friendly and accommodating, We also visited the restaurant a few times and loved our delicious dinners. The lodge coordinated a number of guided tours for us, which we really enjoyed, especially Monteverde cloud forest and Santa Elena reserve. Definitely a highlight of our 3-week trip to Costa Rica!

Hello! You can have the test done in the town of Santa Elena, about half a mile from our lodge or it can be arranged to be done in our lodge. Please contact Monteverde Lodge for further advice.
We stayed in one of the garden rooms and didn't have any issues with noise from above. The room was small but cozy and had a really nice terrace with furniture and a hammock outside. I would stay there again without hesitation.
HI Nancy,
Yes, sure, our receptionists will help you to book the activities you like when you arrive.
You can see the list of tours that we offer in the Monteverde Lodge & Gardens website, just go to the Activities tab and you'll find them there.
For a night tour I would recommend El Refugio Twilight Tour.
The night walk is a two hour walk on both flat and uphill trails. Some steep sections have steps and handrails. You will have the opportunity to see nocturnal animals such as olingos, kinkajous, two-toed sloths and possums, tarantulas, if you’re lucky perhaps a snake, during the rainy season some species of frogs. It’s not uncommon to see migrant and resident birds sleeping and you will only view them with flashlights handled by the nature guide, so as not to disturb their sleep. Regardless of what you see, the experience of walking in the forest after dark is unique.
See you soon!
There are more places to choose from in the Santa Elena area.
