Staying at Cabinas El Pueblo felt like staying with family. The hosts were incredibly warm and helpful, offering great advice on local tours and activities. The rooms were simple but very clean, and the shared spaces had a charming, homey feel. The free coffee and tea were a great bonus, and the breakfast was fresh and delicious. Perfect for travelers looking for a budget-friendly, welcoming stay

This is a fantastic bed and breakfast in Santa Elena! We received the most personal, genuine, and heartfelt service from the owners, which is the very definition of quintessential Costa Rican hospitality. The property is very small, with only ten rooms and a common area at the bottom of a hill. The rooms are very basic, yet clean and functional. This bed and breakfast is an excellent value, as a delicious breakfast was included each morning. We particularly appreciated access to the inn's kitchen, as we were able to prepare a few meals for ourselves. A particular bonus was that the innkeeper's wife shared her homemade banana bread with us, and even gave us the recipe on our departure! The innkeepers told us about their family-run coffee plantation, from which they serve their fresh coffee in the morning. I honestly felt that I was treated like family here. The innkeepers also helped us with arranging transportation to continue on the next stage of our trip. I must add that knowledge of Spanish was a tremendous asset to our stay here, as for any trip to Latin America in general. However, the innkeeper's children speak English very well. I should also add that our room was right next to a road with frequently passing vehicles, so the noise was a bit bothersome at times. I suggest just bringing a pair of earplugs which should solve that problem. Just remember where you are! All in all, it is clear that this is a delightful, family-run bed and breakfast that I would highly recommend for any traveler, particularly one who is looking for an authentic experience, who is looking to really connect with the local culture. Muchas gracias!!

Marlenny was very friendly, and our rooms were inexpensive yet comfortable. The breakfast was delicious both days; it was served in the common area which had a dining area, kitchen and lovely sitting room with couches and a table. We booked a zipline excursion via Marlenny that was absolutely amazing.

We would come again for sure. Marleny was incredibly helpful as we had to leave our previous lodging suddenly late at night. Online booking wasn’t even open and she answered her phone cam down from our house, gave us a tour, keys to the kitchen and made us feel welcome at 11pm. If you’re looking for kind friendly hospitable service with clean rooms and plenty of plants to enjoy stay here! Great location just a block from the main plaza in Santa Elena. Oh and she also coordinated our taxi boat taxi to la fortuna/arenal which was so helpful!

I looked around the town for about 1.5 hours and this was the best midrange place I could find that was close to the center. Great location, and great setting (right beside a creek). The room I had was really nice, windows on both sides, not too small. Staff was friendly and helpful.

Yes, you read right!

We are a canadian family of four that has travelled extensively around the world. We had reserved one family room for two nights for a total amount of USD120 at Cabinas El Pueblo. We arrived on a cold and rainy afternoon.

After checking the chilly and very drafty room, thanks to a 2" crack underneath the room door , I decided to have a shower to warm up, only to find out that this shower could only provide cold water. At this point we informed the young man at the desk that we would only be staying for one night. He then called the manager, who upon arrival requested immediate cash payment for both nights, whether we stayed one night or two, because of her reservation policy. We reminded her that hot water had been promised. She then stormed to our room and stood about 10 minutes in front of the shower, desperately trying to get hot water from it. Turning back to us, she declared this was hot water by Costa Rican standards...
I then tried to reason with her to no avail, and finally offering to pay one full night, plus half the second one as a compensation, which would have come to USD 90. She first agreed, but then added that she would no take in account the amount already paid as a deposit for the room and would keep that amount. If we didn't pay, she threatened to take the money from my credit card and then left.
After her departure, her sister took over and informed us that we had 10 minutes to leave or she would call the police if we didn't go. Again, I tried to reason with her, but she would only cover her ears with her hands and refused to look or speak to me.
As she had promised, three armed Costa Rican police officers arrived...Speaking only Spanish, she then proceded to give them an animated report , which we could not understand, as our Spanish is very limited. The young man at the reception was then asked by the police officers to inform us that because of a Costa Rican law that allows hostel/hotel operators to accept or refuse customers, they could not intervene and politely asked us to leave. Our deposit was then promptly returned.
The owner's sister then watched us with a grin on her face quickly pack our belongings while shouting over to phone to the young man at the desk to cut the Internet in the cabinas,

This is how, escorted by three police officers, four peaceful canadians were rudely expulsed of Cabinas El Pueblo on a dark, rainy night in Monteverde.
