Secret Garden is an oasis within the lively coastal village of Unawatuna, just 20m walking distance from the beach. It boasts a 19th century Dutch-Sri Lankan Colonial Villa with bungalows and suites and a 4000sqm tropical garden. In the middle of the garden rests a large dome, offering 2 daily yoga classes, an on call Ayurvedic therapist for massage and wellness therapy as well as free space for dance, meditation and music. Our staff is courteous and warm. A large tropical breakfast is available daily at all times, and our two chefs are lovingly prepared to cook a great eastern or western meal for you on pre-order. Secret Garden provides relaxation and serenity alongside the opportunity to dive into the blue ocean of one of the country's most popular bays, experience the myth of the Rumassala Mountain and dance away at Unawatuna's many beach bars. May all be Welcome!

I don't usually review anything but this was the worst experience I have had in any vacation. We have made a reservation for 4 days looking forward to being near the bea We made a reservation for nights looking forward to being near the beach. We got a mail 1 day before we arrived telling us that the hotel was overbooked.. How can it be overbooked 1 day before we arrive!? The hotel offered us another option to go to another hotel which was a joke, the other hotel was not situated near the beach and worst of all not in the same area and reviewed as a disgusting place.. We tried calling the hotel and someone who did not speak English started laughing at us .. Seems that this situation happens a lots regarding the comments. When we finally got someone who spoke English on the phone, the person assured us that we would receive a mail confirming that we canceled the stay and that the hotel would refund us everything, we never received any confirmation.. No one seemed to take any responsabilities, when we called the manager, he told us to call the owner and the owner would tell us to call the manager and so on... We had to go to the hotel to ask to see the owner who did not want to meet in person but on the phone, we insisted until she finally showed up. The owner was so rude and did not even apologies once, I have never seen anybody that rude to his customers! We asked her to send us a mail to confirm that we would be refund as she told us previously on the phone that it would be taken care of but she said that she could not do it, is it that complicated to send a mail when you own a hotel!? We finally convinced her to write something on a piece of paper.. After all of this, we had to come a second time to meet the manager who showed us that the reservation was refunded due to the fact that we canceled it.. Even though this was not the reason because the real reason was that they wanted to transfer us to another hotel because we understood that they had a connection with the other hotel.. Being so tired of the situation, we decided to leave and found another place.. The hotel seemed nice but it is not worth it, you will have a big amount of chance of being transfer to another hotel...

Upali is one of the best yoga teachers we had the pleasure of doing class with. A nice flow of yoga to suit each person needs. There were only 3 of us so it was one on one. Meditation to begin & end the class just what we needed while travelling. Please attend his classes you will be amazed @ how you feel after. He plays a wooden flute at end during meditation. He also does Ayurveda massage my husband got one as his back was acting up and he felt brilliant after. Upali has a lovely way about him very sincere & genuine. He has a very caring and calming nature. Wished we could have stayed longer & attended more of his classes.

We had a great stay at secret garden villa for 3 nights. The room was clean with incense on arrival with a huge bed and a lovely outdoor shower. We made the most of the facilities; we had dinner and cocktails at the sushi bar and did morning yoga in the domed yoga hut. The staff were all very friendly. The garden was amazing. Would recommend.

I got taken to Secret Garden by another yoga teacher I had originally planned to go to but I was the only person who had turned up for the class and he didn’t want to teach just one person... and I’m so glad! After joining the class a few minutes late we were straight into it. The class was pretty fast flowing, the structure to it was great, there was a clear focus throughout the class leading us into certain asanas towards the end. The teacher (sorry I don’t know your name) worked to everyone’s individual needs, there was one complete beginner and a couple more advanced yogis and we all loved the class! Thanks so much <3

Let us begin with the positive - the staff was really nice. And the obvious - positive reviews are rigged. We aren’t the type to leave negative reviews. If we have nothing nice to say we usually don’t say anything at all. There are a few exceptions and this is one of them. During our month of travel in Sri Lanka, this is the only place we stayed that was a true disappointment. Everything we endured during our stay would have been bearable if our room and the hotel were clean. But they are not clean or kept. The place is not cared for at all. An older building requires a lot of extra up keep - it cannot exist on charm alone. Especially in a tropical climate. Our room was so dirty we didn’t walk on the floor or shower without wearing our sandals. The walls, floors, ceiling fans, light switches and furniture - all covered in fifth. The bed linens, stained and threadbare. There were cockroaches and ants everywhere along with a really creepy 8” centipede - the kind that will bite you in your sleep. The electricity and water went off for hours at a time - we were told “They have no control over this - it’s the Sri Lankan government”. However, one afternoon I was in the shower covered in soap, while my husband was sitting outside on our veranda and an employee came outside our room and switched off the electricity. I had to wipe soap out of my eyes and off my body with a towel. When the electricity is shut off the water shuts off too. In the heat of the same night the power went out for 3 hours. The owner (who is Swedish) knew the power was going to be cut and hired a generator for her restaurant (on the same property) which is open to the public. She did not care enough about her guests to extend the same courtesy. A few other issues- the toilet lid would not stay open. We had to hold it open and use the toilet at the same time. The “handheld” shower nozzle would not stay attached to the “wall mount” adaptor. The stream running through the “Secret Garden” is being used as a grey water flushing system by the establishment. One morning my husband was offered breakfast while the cook brushed his teeth with his fingers. Personal hygiene is important. Which is why it should stay personal. Our bill for two nights of sleepless torture was $260. Do yourself a favor and stay where you are wanted. The Secret Garden doesn’t want you, but they do want your money.
