The most renowned holiday destination 'down south', Unawatuna Beach is famous for its natural beauty, laid back ambience, proximity to Galle Fort, a Unesco World Heritage site, and was named by Mark Ellington of Lonely Planet, as one of the 10 best beaches in the world. UBR (Unawatuna Beach Resort), re-branded in 2011 as Calamander Unawatuna Beach, has developed to become a family friendly resort with a truly international clientele. The resort retains much of the charm and laid back ambiance of the old UBR. Good food, consistently good service, friendly staff, al fresco dining, three of the best swimming pools in the country, an outdoor jacuzzi and the most fabulous beach front, the accommodation is mid category with standard, premium and family rooms. Calamander's design ethos of simplicity and modernity, with the focus on outdoor activities as well as outdoor dining, enables guests to truly experience and enjoy the delights of a beach resort.

We booked (& received confirmation of) a room on the top floor, but on arrival we discovered that all the rooms on the top floor had been given to other people. We hung around reception for a long time to try & obtain what we had been promised, but without any success. Also, before booking, I asked if there was any beach at all at the hotel and I was informed that there was, but on arrival, discovered that this was a lie. Even the final bill was wrong & showed a lower amount for the advance payment than I actually paid. This happened some time ago, but I still want to report it, because it was such a bad experience and I know it's not typical of Sri Lanka because I have stayed in so many hotels in Sri Lanka, mostly great.

Rooms were adequate. No hot water for 2 days, but as it was absolutely steaming hot, really only wanted a cool shower. One day while we were trying to rest in the afternoon the power went out continually, so of course the aircon was out of action. The beds were very comfortable and as it didn’t seem to be very busy, it was nice and quiet. Didn’t find the breakfast buffet as good as others we’ve had in Sri Lanka and I guess this may be because things are quiet and they are trying to cut costs? I would suggest that as many places seem to have a problem with dogs, the hotel management might like to post a sign asking the guests not to feed them. I’m sure it would have made my enjoyment of my time there better without them constantly sniffing around and pooping everywhere. There must be some very large ones around as I found a humongous pile near our room one morning and was glad I hadn’t come across that dog in the night. The ground staff do a nice job keeping the gardens and pool clean, But why is that pool painted red? It is the most unappealing colour for a pool, and sometimes resembled nothing less than a pool filled with blood.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Calamander Unawatuna Beach. We are very sorry that you had no hot water. We had no reports of problems during the time you stayed. We would have resolved the issue as quickly as possible, if we had known. Regarding the power cuts, we have had constant power cuts recently caused by CEB directing all the electrical power needs to one very large establishment on the beach. This sadly is not a one off occurrence. Regarding the dog menace. We completely agree with you. We have tried everything to stop guests encouraging dogs, by feeding them. We are taking measures to stop them coming Into the grounds. Thank you for your observations. Yours sincerely, Miss Paloma Scott.

Room carpet was not clean, neither the balcony where there was dead insects on a chair for 7 days. Good Big bed and Big bathroom, but with a terible smell of petrol from the drain. A few sunbeds on the Beach which thet allowed russians to occupy every morning and keep for the whole day by leaving their towels there. Umbrellas and sunbeds were broken. From enterance to the room we looked down on broken building materials / garbage and from a window we had a view to a pool and a small garden full of broken furnitures. Reception was a part of a bar, with lazy staff hanging round. Howrver breakfast was good, but restaurant dinner too Expensive. Blue Beach bar was closed, diveshop also closed.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Calamander Unawatuna Beach. We have noted your observations regarding the carpet and the dead insects on the chair on your balcony and we apologize most sincerely for these errors in our house keeping. We also sincerely apologize for the chemical smell emanating from the drain. We have approximately 34 sun beds on the beach, 21 on the private beach by the Blu pool and 17 by the Red Pool. Sun beds are taken on a first come, first serve basis. We are an international hotel and we welcome everyone, where ever they come from. We apologize for the broken sun beds and umbrellas. We check every day for breakages and remove them. Your room 504 looks straight out onto a beautiful lawn, trees and the red pool. Yes the side window does look onto a less than perfect garden. We apologize for the mess that is in and we will immediately get it cleaned up. We have noted your comments about lazy staff at the reception area and we have immediately acted on this and asked our staff not to use the front desk as chatting area. Our reception. Is in our restaurant so it means that you are immediately attended to with beverage, food and the most beautiful views of the beach and ocean beyond. No one is sitting in a gloomy reception area. Our a la carte dishes are very reasonably priced, (no dish more than rs850.00). There is a live station, a selection of freshly cooked dishes, make your own salad, dinner special every evening, soup and bread, fresh fruit and flambé fruit and ice cream, all priced between rs500 and rs1,000. When we have a buffet, it is priced at rs1,950 and this is also very reasonably priced. And we have the freshest seafood and fish, which is sold by weight. If we cannot find fresh seafood and fish, we don’t stock it. It’s a great shame that you missed out on all this choice. We have noted your observation regarding the dive shop. We have taken note that Pearl Diivers should make it clearer that they can be contacted any time, either by yourself or our front desk staff. We will rectify this. Yours sincerely, Miss Paloma Scott.

A resort with daily morning yoga sessions for starters, the beachside location is key. Another huge plus is the excellent breakfast buffet with fresh cut fruits, your choice of eggs, local Sri Lankan options and more. Rooms are sizable and clean with the ocean just a few steps away. Shops and restaurants are all within walking distance, and tuk-tuks are readily available to transport you to Galle and other nearby areas. The only issue I had was really with the third party booking service that failed to communicate properly with the hotel when we needed to modify our stay.

Stayed here 3 nights to relax after tour around Sri Lanka. Room was really nice overlooking pool but not noisy. Had also facilities you need, good air con and Wifi. Replenished daily with bottles of water, tea coffee etc. Bathroom so big, nice and clean. Staff very helpful, breakfast buffet was good, big choice. Didn’t eat in the evening here as wanted to try the numerous restaurants along the beach front. Drinks were a reasonable price, you sign for drinks then pay at the end of your stay.

Accurately described, such places either are or are not your cup of tea. I fall into the latter camp. It is right on the beach. It goes for the stylish edge and succeeds on that point. It does not ooze charm, seeking polish. The public areas like reception, the bar and the restaurant are all open, the [at times] all too warm breezes flowing. Staff were fine. The room was large. The a/c worked well. Keep it a bit high at night unless you want to get up to shut it off. There are coffee/tea facilities. There is room wifi which took some time to connect but worked well thereafter. The uploading speed for photographs was the best so far in the country. There is a fridge but no minibar. The bathroom is huge. There was a tub and a separate shower without any curtains. There were two sinks. The shampoo and shower gel were oddly not marked. Toiletries and water were replaced on the second day. I did not have dinner but the breakfast was very good. Even if only in packet form [likely due to the humidity], to see salt and pepper on the table was rare. A unique feature was a chap cutting up in front of you what fruit you wanted. My room looked away from the sea. Still not my type of place but it delivers for those who want an upscale beach experience.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Calamander Unawatuna Beach. It is refreshing to read an honest and fair review. The hotel is about the beach and being on and as close to the beach as possible. The public areas are open and that is the beauty of the hotel. No enclosed, high rise, glass plated, air conditioned structure destroying the natural beauty of the beach; no faux Bawa boutique here! No other hotel has a restaurant on the beach. The vernacular architecture inspired the architect to create one of the longest timber roofs in the country. Our hotel is about being completely relaxed and informal. As one guest wrote recently “the perfect place to do nothing.” We have noted your comment about the stickers for the dispensers - there has been a delay; please accept our apologies. We are delighted that you appreciated our live cooked breakfast. Kings regards, Miss Paloma Scott.

We are just back from two weeks in the Calamander, sandwiched in between five star luxury hotels in Colombo. First impression of this hotel was that Tripadvisor in fact did it a disservice. Most of the pictures I looked at showed dark beach, etc but in fact this is a bigger place than expected and in fact was really good and better than its rating shows. Their website could do with improvement. The beach is huge and we hit the beach sun beds daily. I never thought I would use the glass pool which we used few times a day to cool down. Its a really short walk to the main drag in Unawatuna (turn right onto beach and down little lane next door). The room was great, service great and it had plenty of facilities. Breakfast was good but otherwise sadly food was terrible. Either cold or microwaved. Loads of restaurants within 100 yards though so wasnt an issue. Bar was good and sundowners very special. The famour red swimming pool was weird but only was in it once. Even though we were there at peak, always plenty of room for everyone. On last day I had my bad nicked at sunbed when I left it unattended. My own fault but just a warning as it is a public beach. We loved the beach and the sea - you develop a technique to get in and out with your swimming togs intact! Great dive centres next door and Pearl Divers owned by hotel Beach boys were really friendly and helpful. I'm a total five star snob but definitely would return. (We came by seaplane from Kandy which was cool). Big thumbs up.

We stayed here with another family for 4 nights and it was the best hotel during our 3 weeks in sri lanka. Best NYE show we've had in asia within the last 7 years! Great beach with a football and beach ball court, getting a 14 player game within 5min. Bar and restaurant quality/price/speed ratio was excellent. Nice pools, good ac. Wifi working good only near the restaurant and the breakfast coffee was terrible (as everywhere in sri lanka). Cleanup was quite random, on our last night they came after sunset.

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay at Calamander Unawatuna Beach. It was a pleasure to read about your experience of our hotel, we are only sorry that you were inconvenienced by the WIFI. We are in the process of improving the WIFI signal for the Pool and New Wing. The two blocks comprise 22 rooms and currently there are only 2 access points. During this New Year period there were 28 devices logged into the WIFI so the access points got oversubscribed. To rectify this situation we are in the process of putting in additional access points. We are very sorry that this was not resolved during the time you were staying with us. We are also extremely sorry about the coffee. We are struggling to get delivery of our Arabica beans and we have had to substitute them with another bean. Also we apologize for the late clean of your room. We will look into why this happened. We do hope you will visit us again. Kind regards, Miss Paloma Scott.
