We are The Salty Pelican Surf & Yoga Retreats based in a handful of beautiful locations throughout Portugal and Sri Lanka. We are not your standard surf & yoga retreat but with a bit of a twist… and we don't just mean with your asanas ! We like to refer to ourselves as a social lifestyle retreat, where a detox juice may be absent but where a glass of locally sourced wine at sunset will not be !

Stayed at The Salty Pelican over the new year period… what a stunning place ! The moment you walk in you feel very welcomed into the Salty Pelican family and instantly fell in love. I cannot fault this place, from the beautiful infinity swimming pool to the open aired yoga shala surrounded by the jungle and sounds of nature to the poolside restaurant serving up great tasting food each day, I was happy to try something new each day from their special menus and group dinner nights which were great to meet the rest of the guests. Im totally missing this place already, the sunrise yoga and meditation the best way to wake up and start my day, take me back already ! I stayed in one of their deluxe all female shared rooms, definitely recommend, so luxury and so much attention to detail and for the price I paid, total value for money, more like a boutique hotel. This place you must stay, its the best property in town from what I seen in the local area.

Wonderful place to learn to surf and practice yoga. I booked this hotel specifically for the yoga but also ended up surfing not once but twice - because Sunny is so amazing! The beginner beach they took us to was a lovely place to discover and felt like a hidden gem that you had to be in the know to find. The yoga classes are excellent and Natasha is a very skilled teacher. We also appreciated the vibe and how easy it was to meet other guests. The hotel is brand new which means there are some kinks that need to be worked out (and this is absolutely normal!). Monika was very understanding of the problem we experienced with the air conditioner which made sleeping difficult. She kindly moved us to another room where our sleep was less disturbed and this meant a lot to us. The pool is lush and a fabulous place to relax and chill out. I think the breakfast could use a bit of work and would benefit from a little more variety such as the addition of roti and dahl, for example. The one dinner we had was very disappointing but I think it was just an off night for the kitchen so would give them the benefit of the doubt here. The Salty Pelican has definitely put together a winning team that make a stay here extra special and I would definitely recommend coming here for their personal touch.

This place truly has everything for one to craft their perfect holiday experience! Beautiful infinity pool, brand new rooms with comfortable mattresses, excursion options (such as temple tour, eco safari, and cooking classes), the best surf boards in the area, and on site yoga classes three times daily. My favourite moments were spent coming together in the evening to enjoy multi course meals with live music and refreshing cocktails. It’s the perfect place to come alone, with a partner, or friends. The owners and staff put their heart and soul into making the space comfortable - and within a day everyone feels like family!

Arrived at this retreat just after their opening day and didn’t want to leave. Perfect location within walking distance to beaches / restaurants with the super scenic Hiriketiya horseshoe bay one side and the long sandy Dickwella beach on the other, both just a few minutes walk away.

The premises themselves were amazing, super modern feel, and the owners have obviously put a lot of thought into the layout and finer details (e.g. bedside usb ports, cold water dispensers, wrist-band door keys, poolside lounges / bean bags, etc.), which make this place a step above other similar places I’ve stayed in. Another cool part of my stay was the way everyone would join up tables at breakfast / dinner and socialise. Ended up meeting people from all around the world and it really felt like one big family by the end.

Definitely keen to return one day!

The Salty Pelican is definitely the best place we stayed in Sri Lanka. We had previously visited their hostel in Portugal and absolutely loved it so we knew we were in good hands! Our stay was perfect! The retreat is brand new, very modern compared to all the places around. The food was delicious and prepared by local chefs, the cocktails were amazing and very affordable. We enjoyed our afternoons by the pool and did some very relaxing massages! Salty Pelican is located a short walk from the beach, location is ideal! But what made this trip really special was the staff, the great vibe and all the great friends we made! We had a blast! Thank you for everything!!

I absolutely LOVED my stay at the salty pelican. I slept in a dorm, which was superclean and spatious and modern. The fact that the place is more luxurious than normal hostels, really attracts amazing guests!
In no time i had found an incredible group of friends who where also all solotravelling.

I had never done surfing before, but after a week at Salty i was actually able to surf quite a bit! I loved it!
Activating yoga in the morning and restorative yoga in the afternoon are perfect balance for surfing and eveningdrinks at one of the many nice bars and restaurants around.

The Salty pelican is located on 5 minutes walking from both hiriketiya beach and dickwella beach (you have the best sunsets here!).

The food at Salty has been perfect everytime, and the massages left me completely zen everytime!

Definetly recommend staying here if you have a little more budget, and are looking for the perfect balance of chilling, activities, socializing and treating yourself!

What am amazing stay I had. I only was able to stay for 2 nights but I would have stayed longer if I could. I stayed in the dorm room and I have never felt cleaner while traveling in Sri Lanka. The beds were big and roomy and everything felt well kept and the shared bathrooms were cleaned multiple times throughout the day. The buildings themselves are beautiful with the pool in the centre which is lovely to take a dip in the afternoon. The staff were so welcoming and on arrival I was brought a welcome drink which was so lovely. All in all it was a wonderful stay and I will definitely be coming back again.

I came to salty pelican with high expectations - I’m a solo female traveler and have been wanting to do a yoga surf retreat in Sri Lanka since 2020, and Salty Pelican managed to exceed my expectations.

I’m not at all a hostel hopper, but I wanted a friendly atmosphere to meet cool people and do activities as I’m alone. I was not disappointed, the facility is very modern and brand new, comfortable with huge dorms and lots of indoor outdoor spaces. I’ve never seen a hostel this cool/nice before so that was a good surprise. The food is excellent and very vegetarian vegan friendly (coming from a Michelin guide addict). The staff were so helpful, especially Gianluca who made me feel immediately welcome and at home.

The location is ideal, walking easily to several beaches, easy tuktuk access, lots of hip up and coming restaurants and boutiques and other yoga studios if you feel like trying different studios. I loved hiriketiya - it’s a smaller village feel so you feel immediately more at home and in a community vs a tourist.

The yoga classes were very nice, with two daily classes including one which was more yin / restorative which I loved, and many other good studios around if you feel like yoga popping. There were several yoga teachers in our group and one was able to give a class as well which was super cool. Our yoga teacher Dee and Gianluca even organized per my request a meditation / breatwork session and it was exceptional. The only thing I would change is dividing the classes into levels - as one general class especially for flow sessions are not only difficult for teachers to balance between brand new yogis and other yoga instructors to keep it accessible and interesting for all.

I’m a beginner surfer but Zé and the local surf teacher were amazing and very funny. I got up on my third try and was really pleased with how simple it was.

A huge thank you, it’s my home in Sri Lanka now and I can’t wait to come back 🙏🏻

I was after a place where I could sleep soundly, enjoy a clean shower (with a hairdryer), and meet some great people: the Salty Pelican offered all of that. The location is perfect as it sits between Dickwella and Hiriketiya beach. The breakfast is divine, the staff (Sonny & Zander) are amazing, and the kitchen staff always have a smile. People here may complain about airconditioning going off at 3am for a few hours, but honestly, you just pop on the fan and you are good. Remember: you are in Sri Lanka, it's such a blessing to have air con anyway. It's better to live a little. Totally recommend.

Overpriced - european prices for Sri Lankan standard. This model might work in Europe but for Sri Lankan super unfair prices and not align with what you get.

Also there are better yoga classes in other accommodations. For me I didn’t like the style of yoga - but this is subjective. Lots of pranayama, mediation and less asanas, vinyasas, movements and stretches

Wifi mostly not working, water cold, lot of bugs in the bathroom, not really clean, a lot of exceptions from “daily unlimited offered yoga classes”, air on leaking and damaged during whole one week stay, kitchen often closed or not available,…

However the dorms are quite spacious and met very nice people.

Response from Rute SP, Owner at The Salty Pelican Surf & Yoga Retreat
Responded Feb 8, 2022
Thank you for your feedback, we are sorry the Salty Pelican didn't live up to your expectations. Our retreat in Sri Lanka offers a much more than our retreats in Europe including extra activities, dinners, a la carte breakfast daily, infinity swimming pool, jungle yoga shala, unlimited premium surfboard rental, wellness centre, and much more complementary services. Our property is the newest and most modern in Hiriketiya, where we offer a weekly experience of surf & yoga with like minded individuals, rather than a stay at any of the local hotels or hostels. We've tried to create an amazing escape with a high quality experience and we have also welcomed your feedback at checkout when you requested a discount because you believed our website information in regards to our yoga programs is misleading. As outlined to you we offer what we advertise. We did apologise for some drips coming from the AC in your room, it happens when guests leave the door open and the AC on maximum but we're trying to find a solution so we can avoid that in the future as we spoke about already. There is no guest kitchen available at our property, as outlined on our website. Hopefully we can welcome you at our retreat in Portugal where we have a guest kitchen in Cascais and the package prices are the same as we advertise on our website and all our retreats.
