Hotel Matlai is designed as an exclusive villa resort for people seeking a high level of comfort and privacy in a relaxed atmosphere. The hotel contains of two villas, Asili House and Villa Kidosho. Both villas are directly on the beach, embedded in abounded blooming and scented plants. Asili House is designed with natural African and Swahili elements, Villa Kidosho in oriental style. Therefore the villas combine the typical african and arabic influences which have shaped the character of Zanzibar.

We stayed 6 nights in Ashili House and it was the most perfect relaxation after a busy safari in Ruaha. The location is wonderful- right on the beach and we loved the sandbar at low tide to walk/swim out to. We absolutely loved our butler Derick who was fabulous and great company - as were all of the staff. Food can be served whenever you require it and we loved the seclusion and beauty of the place. Our room was spotless and the art created on our bed every day was beautiful and a great joy! Would recommend doing the snorkelling and starfish tour that the hotel organised. The spa was also an amazing experience. Would not hesitate to recommend - a beautifully managed hotel. Thdd as no you so much Inge.

After an adventure gorilla trekking what better way to chill and relax. From the moment we arrived at Hotel Matlai it was like being transported to a world of peace and tranquility. A lovely personal welcome from Justus, gorgeous views and beach, spacious lovely room overlooking the Indian Ocean a few yards away ( tide does go out a long way but the view stays the same). Our lovely butler care team Derek and Mohamad with attention to detail and persaobal and friendly support for the whole week. Food is to be expected supreme with what should be award winning crab specialities. Thanks to Monica for arranging our favourite table 4, overlooking the beach each evening. All in all an idyllic week ideal for a quiet peaceful lovely break. Couldn't be better...

The owner, Mrs. Inge and her son, Tim claim, since the Paradise is not on the earth, hence they can show only a piece of it in Hotel Matlai. Well, I disagree – this wonderul boutique hotel is definitely THE EDEN! We stayed in Villa Kidosho, which has two rooms only with a shared pool. The other house has six rooms, two on each floor. Kidosho’s Room Mwezi was the most private accomodation we had during our trip to Tanzania. Best place for relaxing, huge room and bathroom, comfortable bed, mini bar, butler service, etc. Even the smallest details are perfectly arranged in this property! We left the hotel only once, for a Blue Safari, but, honestly, you can have your own one – in front of the Matlai. There are sand banks in walking distance, it is worth to go there when it is low tide for walking, snorkeling, etc. The Beach bar is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a huge selection of delicious foods, cocktails, spirits, wines and the warmest hospitality. It is worth to go there if you are staying somewhere else, this area of Zanzibar. Special thanks to our butler, the always smiling and happy Hashim, and for Moh‘d, Derrick, the bartenders, Julius and Karimu and the Trainee Butler who brought us the second champagne!

Boutique Hotel Matlai is an incredible property with top notch, personalized service. No small detail was overlooked by the owners. You can tell they took many years of travel experiences to ensure guests have all they need in an idyllic setting. You could choose various locations where your meals would be privately served, be it breakfast on your terrace overlooking the ocean, a candlelit dinner on the beach or in one of the many garden nooks, to a lunch at the bar or to take on an excursion. The suites are very spacious with claw footed tub and walk in shower and all have gorgeous views. There are limited units so you feel like you have the place to yourselves. The waters are pristine with sandbars and snorkeling to see tropical fish just off the beaches. Most of all, the people working there made you feel like family and were very accommodating and friendly. Will definitely return when back in Tanzania!

It's hard to put into words how great this place was. We only stayed for 3 days after a weeks safari in Tanzania and wish it would have been longer. This could not have been a more perfect place for our honeymoon. We have travelled a lot and this is the best service we have ever experienced. Tim was so friendly and welcoming and clearly this is embedded in all the staff. Mohammed and Justas were 2 staff in particular that were just fantastic and made are stay such a special one. They couldn't do enough for you and answered any questions you might have with ease as well as arranging all trips you might want to do. The flexibility of eating location combined with the really excellent food was a highlight of our eating experiences in Africa. I'm not sure I can do it the justice it deserves in this review but it really was the most perfect place to go on holiday. Thank you.

We visited only for food in the small beachfront restaurant and can highly recommend it for wonderful service and choice. We returned for a second visit - perfect ‘toes in the sand’ candle lit dining experience with lovely colourful. African table linen, beautifully chilled wine and icy cool water. I recommend the crab and coconut soup (served in a coconut). This was the best thing I tasted in Zanzibar. Asante sana x.

We spent 7 days at Hotel Matlai after a safari and could not have been happier. There are SO many reasons that you should stay here, but see below for a list of top reasons: 1. Rooms: We stayed in the Mwezi Room of Villa Kidosho, which was extremely spacious, comfortable and light-filled. From the patio, you can go directly to the pool, ocean and uniquely curated lounge areas (i.e. lounge chairs, hanging daybed, shaded verandas, etc.) which leads to an abundance of wonderful places to spend your days right from your door. 2. Location: In our minds, Hotel Matlai offered the best of both worlds in that it was directly on the beach but also is very lush and spacious, making it feel secluded. There are restaurants, a dive shop and market up and down the beach, so plenty to do if you're looking to explore the area. There is also endless opportunities for running/walking on the beach, especially at low tide. I was able to do an 18 mile run on the beach one morning and still didn't tire of the views, which feels like a huge testament to the amazing location :) 3. Service: The team at Hotel Matlai so dedicated and extremely professional, while also being approachable and friendly. They go so far above and beyond to make sure your every need/want is met - from morning and nightly turn-down services to suggesting recommendations based on your preferences (i.e. the scent of the room, dietary preferences, etc). 4. Food and drink: There was a newly curated menu each night, with such great balance. I am vegetarian and had an abundance of options for every meal and never ate the same thing twice. Hotel Matlai is one of a kind and while I could go on and on, will leave it at: don't look any further and book this spot!! :)

The other 5-star reviews capture everything you need to know about Hotel Matlai — incredible service, beautiful rooms, an incredible infinity pool, great food and drinks...what more do you need? I cannot wait to come back in the future. Each night at the hotel is worth every penny.

Beautiful small hotel that allows a lot of privacy and quality time. We had the pleasure to enjoy 7 nights at the „Asili House“ and had a great time. Lovely gardens, spacious rooms with all you need (& more :)), nice pool and everything decorated with attention to detail. The staff is amazing, very friendly and attentative. There is always a decent choice of different menu’s for dinner and the food is very delicious - prepared with fresh, local ingredients. One of the highlights for us was clearly the private dinner tables. Set-up beautifully at the place of our choice in the gardens or close to the sea. Also the open air cinema is a great idea and a beautiful experience! Can 100% recommend Matlai. More a general note regarding the sea/beach: as probably the case in whole Zanzibar, tides are significant, ocean floor is rather stony and there are plenty of sea urchins. There is however a sandbank close to the hotel (only when low tide) and Matlai kindly provides goggles and proper reef shoes.

We really enjoyed our stay at this boutique hotel. The rooms were lovely and generous in size, everyone had designated seating and lounging at the beach so you never have to worry about reserving a cabana, and the staff were wonderful. Each room comes with a phone and personal butler who is there to take care of all your needs. The food was ok- great breakfasts but dinner was just ok. Can’t say I enjoyed any nighttime meals but I think they did their best. Had a few meals at the Rock restaurant next door which were delicious.
