Another last minute decision prompted us to book this over the phone. We arrived in the dark and the last mile probably provides an experience which is magical and mystical. We found ourselves driving in a deep ravine along a bend in the river Wye with literally sheer drops either side with the lights from cottages providing a magic lantern...

Better average. Our room was clean and spacy with great view. There was weakness though. It was not possible to stand in the bath and take shower as the sealing was too low. So we struggled to take a showed. The TV was very small and it too far from the bed to watch it comfortably. Restaurant did not impress....

I would like to thank this TripAdvisor reviewer for their feedback It is unfortunate that this reviewer wasn't able to inform us directly during their stay about the issues they have experienced. The room that they were booked into is one of our River Facing King Rooms and is advertised as having a handheld shower which is not fixed to...

Quick summary: Hotel itself is lovely. Service was really nice and food at the restaurant is really good. Location is beautiful, nice walks around but quite dead in winter (many surrounding places are closed) but I can imagine it an extremely nice place in Spring-Summer. We stayed for two nights in December 2016. Room was adequate size, clean and practical;...

Arrived Friday night to start my birthday weekend with friends, family and staff arriving and departing at various intervals over the weekend and then the finger of fate struck and my wife fell over one of our grand children and had to be taken to hospital. Returned at 5 am to spend rest of the weekend in our room, except...

It is some years since I visited this hotel, the last time being just as the new owners took it over. At that time it was very friendly but, well, tired is probably the kindest way to put it. It was much in need of TLC and a coat of paint, and goodness me, has it had it?!! Clearly the...

My wife and I visited Symonds Yat to walk our dog. The walk involved using the ferry (worked by hand) and then by the river to a rope bridge and back to Symonds Yat via a disused railway track. We finished up at The Royal Lodge and were pleased to find they were an establishment with two large separate dining...

The jewel in the crown of this beautifully-located and generally well-appointed place is without question the Staff, and in particular Rachel who could teach the Hospitality industry and the Diplomatic Corps a thing or too. Arriving tired and a bit flustered, she soothed our feathers without a hint of being patronising, a swiftly turned us from rather grumpy into relaxed...

Beautiful hotel hidden away in Symonds Yat on the Beautiful River Wye. Nothing, and I mean nothing was too much trouble. If you are hungary, eat there, the food was amazing and such great value for money too. I will definitely be back and have passed the cards around to all my business colleagues.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Royal Lodge at Symonds Yat East has an idyllic setting in the heart of the Wye Valley in an area of outstanding natural beauty where the River Wye cuts a swathe through a wooded gorge on the edge of the spectacular Royal Forest of Dean. The Lodge is nestled just below Symonds Yat Rock and stands exclusively in grounds of almost 5 acres overlooking the river. It has terraced gardens of magnolia trees and a well established wisteria. The Royal was originally built in 1876 as a Royal hunting lodge and was converted to a hotel in the 1920's. It has had a full and extensive refurbishment in 2008 and is managed by Graham Howells who has overseen the transformation and ensures that the level of service reflects the new development and idyllic location. The Royal Lodge is a great place to unwind with long relaxing walks in outstanding scenery. The hotel is also well situated to explore the Wye Valley, Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and the South Wales coast. ... more   less
