We had planned to spend the last two nights of our visit to Austria at the Obertrauner Hof, supposedly a quiet and peaceful hotel. We arrived late afternoon and only found our key in an envelope when another guest pointed us at it. That is the check-in process. Very soon afterwards, the first band playing over the road started their sound check. It was incredibly loud! Not much later, the concert started. We could get no peace, even by closing the doors and windows. It was not just a bit of loud music which you may hear coming from a neighbour's garden, but like standing right next to a speaker at a very loud concert. I rang the number provided in lieu of any staff on site, but the person I spoke to could not help. He could not move us and could not do anything about the noise. I could not speak to the manager to complain and would have to wait until the next morning. We went up the road to another hotel to sit quietly for a while and were told that the music festival would be going on all weekend. After our return and at some point after midnight, my partner contacted the local police to complain about the noise. Eventually it stopped. We decided we could not stay a second night, despite the fact that it was already paid for. I can assure you that we are not in the habit of wasting money! We ate a basic breakfast (along with a lot of other very tired-looking guests) and finally managed to find someone to speak to as we were leaving. We were told that the music events tended to be spontaneous, so they could not have warned us about it when we booked. I asked for a refund of one night and was told that we had to contact booking.com as we had booked through them. Subsequently I emailed the hotel and booking.com. Booking.com rang me within an hour of my email. Our mistake had been not contacting them the night before (a lesson learned!), but the hotel were refusing our refund request. I exchanged a few emails with the hotel, who replied eventually. They were sorry and understood our anger, but, 'It is very unfortunate that such a festival took place during your stay in Obertraun. We do our best to keep things quiet in the house, but such things as public events are beyond our control. Besides we received the information about the festivities on a very short notice. Obertraun is usually a very quiet and peaceful place. But in summer it fills with life and festivities - which is fine too.' Also, 'We did not really know that the party would be so disturbing until it was actually happening. Besides, in any circumstances your reservation was non-refundable - even if you cancelled, no refund would be possible.' So, they are happy to take bookings, but will take no responsibility for providing information about potential noise, or an opportunity to cancel if, like us, you would not appreciate the volume. Apart from the noise, the beds were clean, the shower was powerful, the room was grubby and breakfast was basic. If you're looking for 'cheap and cheerful' at a not so cheap price and have the advantage of deafness, it may be the place for you, however, I could not recommend it to anyone.

German rock "music" playing till early hours right opposite. Very loud. Do Not stay unless you have a hearing impairment. One star too much for this torture. No hand towel. Walls are thin. No prior warning of this terrible noise. Would not have stayed and will never ever stay again.

Obertrauner Hof is not in Hallstatt. It located at Obertraun. To go Hallstatt, there are public bus. walk about 300meter, there is the bus stop (opposite Yellow Church), bus go to Hallstatt and also to Dachstein-Salzkammergut (Five Fingers). Get the guest card from hotel, the post bus is free of charge. (might different offer for different period) check with tourist information centre. Tourist information just few nearby the hotel, few meter away. same location with the supermarket. Its very nice location. We are taking train to Wein after Hallstatt trip. and the train station is same at bus stop area mention earlier. walking distance. So convenience. Recommend this place!

We stayed at their "superior room", which wasnt superior at all. No tv in the rooms, no safe and the floor was dirty too. The bathroom was moldy and dirty as well. Looks like the rooms hadnt been renovated since the 60s! The breakfast was ok but nothing typically austrian was offered. So the rooms are highly overpriced and i will not stay there again.

We are two couples over the age of 50. It was quiet and comfortable. Cute building. Our adjoining rooms were up three flights of stairs & there is no elevator/lift. Rooms were clean - free Wi-Fi; no television - but when we had to search for a misplaced earring back, saw that behind the doors and behind the toilet was dirty. Breakfast is no reflection of European cuisine. It’s terrible. It would not be difficult for them to at least obtain fresh bakery rolls, but they serve frozen and warmed along with cold cereal, a few cold cuts & one type of cheese and there are sliced tomatoes and sliced cucumbers. Coffee machine does make good coffee. When the other guests asked for yogurt, there was some yogurt. Market across the street is good for essentials. Confused as to why anyone would stay here twice because one must drive to Hallstatt and to all of the local attractions. Staying in Hallstatt costs the same and would be a much better option.
