The rooms were spectacular and spacious, The views are mind blowing, the staff were so friendly and the food was outstanding
We will definitely recommend this Lodge to anyone travelling to / or around Christchurch. There is lots to do in the little town of Hamner Springs. (5 minutes away)
Special mention to these three people who went out of their way for us
Chamindo - the chef; spectacular meals (the steak melted in our mouths, and the Lamb Shank was "to die for")
Sagrika - in the spa; who gave me the most relaxing massage
and; Tharindu - who we dealt with prior, and warmly welcomed us at reception
10/10 to all of you, We will be back
We arrived for a five day stay on a Monday to be told that there would be no housekeeping or room service or restaurant available until Wednesday. This was rather a shock as we had been planning on staying there for the entire time, but we had to drive 10 km into Hanmer Springs every night to avail ourselves of dinner.
There was a beautiful menu available in the room compendium (on paper rather than a QR code, thankfully!). However there was also an insert of one page which listed such delicacies as soup and garlic bread, fish and chips and a couple of other heat and eat type of meals which were what was ACTUALLY available. We chose to pass.
Also take your own snacks and drinks as the minibar charges are exorbitant. And prepare for a bone rattling ride for the 3 km from the main road to the lodge, it is pretty much made up of entirely large and very jarring potholes!
When you are paying $350 a night for a room, however beautiful, you do expect not to have to make your own bed or wash up your own cups and glasses. I note that there is also no partial refund for the lack of these basic amenities which should go without saying in a lodge of this supposed quality.
The staff were pleasant and as helpful as possible, but obviously embarrassed by the state of things. However the same old excuses of “difficulty recruiting staff” were trotted out, but we noticed that the restaurants in Hanmer Springs seemed to have no trouble maintaining full staffing, which leads one to wonder about the conditions of working at Braemar Lodge.
All in all, we would only return after making a phone call to ascertain that everything that one would expect from a lodge of this calibre is available before staying. We felt very let down.
But not this time. We have just had a three-night stay and it is clear that standards of maintenance, management, and restaurant have all dropped significantly
Many facilities in our room were not working and/or missing. The housekeeping standards were poor, we suspect due to a lack of adequate supervision, and on one day they forgot to service our room completely.
They messed up our request for a surprise birthday cake to be served as dessert on the second day. It was in our room on arrival. Wrong day. Wrong place.
The restaurant meals were merely average, and service extremely slow. Only one chef, one waiter, and apparently no other assistants.
The hotel’s accounting system was a shambles, and we ended up telling the manager exactly what our final balance should be. Checkout was the first time we had even seen the manager.
There is no reception between 7:00pm and 8:00am and at no time was there any concierge or help with luggage. This could be a problem with elderly guests.
Sadly, this stay which was in celebration of a big birthday, was not what we expected. We will not stay here again.
Our room was very generous and spacious and I do mean spacious with a large lounge area and lovely inbuilt fireplace, large and full width windows provided full view of the mountains.
We took the opportunity to dine in-house at the restaurant and had a lovely meal that at the time of our stay came with a cost saving option. Most of us opted for one of the steak dishes and the food was excellent and better than some of the better rated restaurant we sampled on our visit.
Staff at reception and in the dining/breakfast area were very polite and we couldn't fault the service.
The overall experience and value was excellent from our view.
The hotel is not perfect and as other reviews have indicated it can be seen the standard was once at a very high level but the facility now shows some signs of wear, particularly in the bathroom - that when fitted would have been first class but showing signs of usage/wear and in need of some repair.
We would happily recommend Braemar as a good option and well worth your consideration, we will make every effort for a return visit to the hotel and Hanmer Springs as we enjoyed this stay very much.
We loved the outdoor spa on the deck, and the friendly efficient staff.
The lodge was a 10 minute drive from town but all meals were included so that wasn’t a problem
There is nothing ordinary here - from the delightful, friendly, polite and courteous staff, to the exceptionally appointed spacious rooms and the food that the amazing chef's produce daily is simply spectacular and delicious.
We cannot fault this luxurious slice of paradise and we are very much looking forward to our return.
