Travelers' Choice
Located in the centre of Treasure Beach, Jakes Hotel is an arty collection of oceanfront hotel rooms, cottages, bungalows, and villas. The hotel began as a restaurant with Sally Henzell as proprietor-in-chief. Guests encouraged her to build a place where they could stay after a night of drinking. She later built other colourful structures (pink, blue and acid yellow) on the beach in Jamaica. Many rooms have outdoor showers, each with its own outdoor space and private entrance. Some rooms have ocean and garden views or interior seating and dining areas. Each room is unique, yet all have oodles of character and charm. Jakes Hotel features hotel rooms, cottages, villas, two restaurants, two bars, a full-service spa, a saltwater swimming pool, and seven freshwater swimming pools. Before hip design-driven boutique hotels became a thing, there was Jakes. There's a reason people return. Treasure Beach isn't a place you tick off a bucket list; it's a place you tuck into.

My family stayed at Jake’s in Treasure Cottage, where all four of us (3 adults, 1 child) had plenty of room and were extremely comfortable. Adrian arranged everything for us, from excursions to transportation to meals, and it made the trip incredibly easy and extremely enjoyable (and relaxing). He is extremely helpful and easy to communicate with both during and before the trip. The cottage itself is fully equipped and roomy, with air conditioning splits in the rooms to keep you cool, comfy beds and plenty of dining and lounging space, inside and outside. We spent so much time just lounging on the porch, enjoying our beautiful, sunny view of the beach. We started every morning walking out the back gate directly onto the beach for a walk, then returned to enjoy home cooked breakfast from Tracy. Can I say enough good things about Tracy? No I cannot. Everything she prepared for us was delicious, including jerk chicken, Escoveitch fish, fish tacos and a loaded continental breakfast, daily. The main Jake’s property is just a short walk from Treasure Cottage, and has a cocktail bar that takes USD or Jamaican, cash or card. Plus, a pool, a great dock to jump off of (safely) and a gift shop and restaurant (we didn’t eat at it because we had meals cooked in our cottage). Excursion recommendations? Definitely the Captain Dennis Boat Tour, which you can combine with the Black River Safari (no need to do separate trips). YS Falls is also great, especially with kids. We had a fantastic time staying at Jake’s. Our trip was exactly what we were hoping it would be, and exceeded our expectations. This is the authentic Jamaican experience you didn’t know you needed.

Had a truly memorable stay and great time at Jakes in Treasure Beach for around 10 days with my wife. I could write a lot about the great locals, the village, the great vibes, plants, tropical nature all around Jakes but there's too much to write about. Special big up to captain clive, reds (bike tours) and herman (juices) Here's some random points from during our stay - Great local community and village. Everything is quite walkable/bikeable, several options for lunch/dinners within easy reach - Taxi + excursions really well organized. All the drivers we had + everyone involved was so friendly - Room interiors were pretty basic, one wooden desk/worktop, which was a bit narrow + slanted. No glasses in room, always had to ask from the kitchen/use bottles. Just felt a little cheap. - No guide/book in the room with a map, would really show explorable the local area is - Restaurant menu was a bit weak, would be useful to offer the standard local options too. It was fancy but repetitive, and quite expensive (in relation to local restaurants). Not the best option(s) for veggie - Sometimes bar + restaurant service was a bit uninterested and too slow (mostly restaurant), to be fair it was so quiet sometimes but other times it would be great. - Jack Sprat had some great food and service - particularly thanks to their senior staff - Beach towel setup is a bit annoying - you're stood waiting for staff (usually bar staff) to just exchange a towel/card, when you could just do it yourself - Breakfast menu could include some standard options better (fruit/granola/yoghurt)

If you're the type of traveler looking for something a little different and off the beaten path, away from the crowds and all-inclusives, then Jake's Hotel is the place for you! Jake's has a main building with reception, a restaurant, a small pool and poolside bar. Just down the path, there is also a Beach Restaurant called Jack Sprat. Both Jake's and Jack's are part of the hotel and you can charge to your room so it is convenient not to carry around cash while there. The food was reliably good and Jake's menu changed daily. There are a variety of buildings on the resort which vary from feeling very cottagelike to expansive villa. You can swim off the dock near the reception area or in the shallow entry beach (which is a 2 minute walk from reception). The staff are warm and friendly and helped us book excursions to YS falls, Captain Dennis boat Tours and could also book art classes and spa services... we were just too relaxed to bother! There are a few tiny restaurants and a bakery also within walking distance of the hotel. *Unless you are a VERY confident driver and can navigate without GPS/google maps, I would recommend getting a shuttle service. We rented a car there and the almost 3hr drive was kind of crazy.

Jakes is charming with small houses in a lovely garden setting by the ocean. We enjoyed the informal atmosphere and the simplicity of our accommodation. This is not a hotel for those who want a 5 star experience but we really enjoyed our stay. The only down side was the food which was poor and pricey. Our previous hotel the week before included everything and the food was exceptional so it was a bit of a shock that the menu was unimaginative and badly cooked. Jakes was not any cheaper so we expected a similar standard. After one bad meal we ate elsewhere for the rest of our stay. You can’t have more than two small cups of coffee at breakfast! You have to pay for any more. The staff weren’t welcoming and were a bit grumpy. More smiles and friendliness would have been nice. As long as you know what to expect it is worth going there.

We stayed at the Calabash Bay Villa and had an A+ experience. The villa was beautifully designed and a perfect setup for two families (4 adults, 5 kids). Everyone had an en suite room, and the outdoor spaces were perfect for hanging throughout the day and seamlessly transitioning between pool and beach. But the highlight was the staff! Adrian was in constant communication before and during the trip to make sure we had everything we needed, Chef Damian prepared incredible meals daily and made sure there was plenty for both the adults' and kids' palates, and Daveon and Rowena were both a joy to be around while also making mealtime easy and keeping the house tidy. We also spent some time over at Jake's and Jack Spratt's and had some lovely moments, but to be honest it was hard to leave the villa with everything we needed there. Also huge shout out to Carleen who babysat the kids a few times to give us parents some downtime. Overall an amazing stay and we're already plotting our next trip back to Jake's.

We stayed for 4 nights in January as part of a bigger trip to Jamaica. I loved our time here it's got the perfect relaxed atmosphere great food and I loved that you could walk via a path to another small beach with Jack Spratt's beach bar right there. Our 3 year old son loved this beach and splashing around in the waves. Our room was perfect and really large. I had a treatment at their spa which was also incredible lying with the crashing waves right next to me. I loved it I wish we'd stayed for longer. The reception helped us organise a boat to the nearby Pelican Bar. A total aside but the pillows were some of the comfiest I've slept on.

This is a destination I've gone to five times over the last 20 years and it never changes! It's always the best! The staff are amazing! The food is amazing! The beaches are pristine and safe and full of coves to swim in. There has been many travel advisories that say it's unsafe in the parish but that is ridiculous! It's very safe. Security guards on the grounds at all times and Jake's is well-revered with the local community. I highly recommend Jamaica and Jake's!!!!'

Our stay at Jake’s was wonderful. Lovely terraced seating for meals overlooking the ocean, beautiful views of the nightly sunsets and massage at Driftwood Spa with the sound of waves serenading really eased us into a relaxing stay. We loved the colorful cottages and unique hotel design. The staff were top notch and assisted in arranging outings like YS falls (fantastic!) and Pelican bar. Had a great time!

This is our 2nd visit, the first was over 12 years ago. The resort has grown with more villas and more restaurants in the area. Jakes is quirky and the rooms reflect this. We stayed in a one room beach villa which had amazing views and a private roof terrace. Some things could do with a bit of TLC, particularly the outdoor bath . However the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and there is a real community feeling in the area. Food was excellent at both Jakes and Smurfs. Dougies bar is the hub. Excellent spa and gorgeous yoga pavilion where you can take a mat and practice overlooking the sea. If you’re expecting pristine marble bathrooms and uniform design then Jakes is not for you. However if you like quirky design, great service and meeting interesting people then go to Jakes. Area around Jakes has grown, it is very safe to walk around . Try Herman’s smoothies and patties outside Jakes. The Wisewellness centre is 5 minutes walk and an absolute must for yoga and fantastic vegetarian food.

I have traveled extensively around Jamaica and the Caribbean. On a recent trip I made the trek to the south coast to stay at Jakes. I’ve heard mixed things for years so was aware it was a roll of the dice. In the interest of time, I’ll condense my experience. When I arrived I was not greeted, waited to check in. They have no help with luggage so I schleped my bags to the furthest reach of the property to an “ocean view villa”. The only view was of a weedy dirt patch, the patio is furnished with dirty rotten wood furniture. The room sports only 2 lights with a 10 watt bulb making it necessary to use my phone flashlight to move around and unpack. The WiFi and AC did not work. The mosquitos were comparable to no where I’ve ever been and there are zero amenities in room. I stay in Rustic boutique hotels often- Jake’s is not rustic it is a dump. I went to the office to inquire about a coffee maker and possibly another light and was told no one was available to help me. I could check back in the morning. In the morning I had made arrangements to check out 3 days early. The manager was defensive and let me know Jake’s is “rustic”, I reached out to the main property manager for a week as did Hotels.com to persue a refund. After 17 attempts have not had acknowledgment or a call back from Colleen the manager. The room condition was poor but the overall service was unforgivable- especially on an island that has some of the warmest people in the world. Jake’s PR team works hard to get press and articles touting it as one of Jamaicas chic resorts… I can not stress enough, the accommodation and service are not worth your money. Jamaica is filled with properties that are so lovely they will change your life. Jake’s is not one.
