Travelers' Choice

Located in the centre of Treasure Beach, Jakes Hotel is an arty collection of oceanfront hotel rooms, cottages, bungalows, and villas. The hotel began as a restaurant with Sally Henzell as proprietor-in-chief. Guests encouraged her to build a place where they could stay after a night of drinking.

She later built other colourful structures (pink, blue and acid yellow) on the beach in Jamaica.

Many rooms have outdoor showers, each with its own outdoor space and private entrance. Some rooms have ocean and garden views or interior seating and dining areas. Each room is unique, yet all have oodles of character and charm. Jakes Hotel features hotel rooms, cottages, villas, two restaurants, two bars, a full-service spa, a saltwater swimming pool, and seven freshwater swimming pools. Before hip design-driven boutique hotels became a thing, there was Jakes. There's a reason people return. Treasure Beach isn't a place you tick off a bucket list; it's a place you tuck into.

Room was clean and functional with a great balcony and view. Food and service was excellent. Check in/out very efficient with Shanice being an example of friendliness experienced by other staff. Excursions were similarly wonderful.

Jakes Resort is beautiful and breathtaking. Every staff member we met was amazing. Adrian went above and beyond to ensure we had a great stay. Kay, Oshane, and Trudy were wonderful. The food was exceptional. Our kids still talk about the french toast! My family stayed at Jakes for 6 nights. Our first reservation was for two nights and we stayed at the Snapper. We loved it so much, we extended for four additional nights but the Snapper was not available so we were assigned Treasure Cot. The cottages were immaculate and beautiful and we could not get enough of the view. It was downright spectacular! We loved the food so much that we invited 15 of our family members and friends to join us for dinner and they enjoyed it. We will be back.

Went for dinner. Very disappointed with portion size (for the price!) and actually got our desserts comped. We all ordered baby back pork ribs with creamed potatoes. A serving size for that is 6 ribs. Most of us got 4 extremely SPARE ribs. Spare of meat that is. The bones were tasty though!

Room Tip: Nice ambience at night. Don't seat under the trees though as there are quite a few ant trails...

Superb hotel - more like a mini resort - on the dry south coast. We stayed for 2 weeks and, for the most part, just chilled. All of the staff were SO friendly and helpful. After breaking my vape, reception rang around local businesses to try and locate a replacement, eventually finding a bar that was closed, who kindly opened specially so that I could purchase a new one. The small community of Treasure Beach seemed very close knit. The food at Jake's restaurant is apparently freshly sourced from local farms. All of the well known Jamaican meals were available. and were for the most part very good. We stayed in the deluxe garden-view room, Cowrie 4, which had a lot of space, although no cupboards or drawers to unpack our belongings. The large bed was extremely comfortable and the washing facilities were very good. Outside, in a covered area, were 2 loungers and a table offering views over the green garden, where, in the mornings, we could watch the birds and geckos. Later on, the sun made the enclosed area just a little too warm. There was a small raised beach with some sun loungers and parasols. Scattered around the front there were many places to sit either in or out of the shade. It was quite tricky to step down from the beach to reach the sea. Many people opted to just jump or dive in from the short pier. The swimming area was quite narrow, but safe as overseen by alert lifeguards. If you wanted to swim, the best option was to walk to one of the nearby uncrowded bays with long stretches of sand. It is difficult to describe the ambience of this place and its innate quirkiness. The sounds of the waves and general bonhomie were pleasantly mesmerising. Would I return there? Yes - although it is a long flight and a 2 hour drive from Montego Bay airport.

Check in very laid back, room old fashioned but lovely. Nice pool and beach, although the ocean was too tough for swimming all three days. You could swim at Jack Sprat beach where there was also a great bar and pizza. It's only a 5 minute walk through the property. Breakfast and lunch at Jakes were good BUT the one night we had dinner there was terrible. Expensive, overcooked fish which was tough, stone cold mashed potatoes and cold vegetables. My husband's jerk chicken was very strange too, not at all like any of many other jerk chicken we've had elsewhere. Meal was sent back and took another half an hour to reappear only marginally better. Not much in the way of an apology either. It was reminiscent of a bad school dinner. Marred an otherwise lovely stay, stick with Jack Sprats to eat.

This is beautiful unique resort with fun colorful architecture, a magnificent ocean front setting, a great spa, and two restaurants. Only critique is that it said it had a gym and yoga but it actually does not, though they did provide access to yoga props and had a lovely deck to do it on. Loved my spa treatments, and that our bungalow had an outdoor shower facing the sea. There are multiple beaches in easy walking distance, though no chairs and tables available there. Overall, very positive experience. Kind and helpful staff

This was our third visit to Treasure Beach and second to Jakes. The community is rural, peaceful and welcoming. Jakes staff reflect the kind nature of the people of St Elizabeth Parish, who farm and feed Jamaica. We stayed at Treasure Cot, the original 1941 cottage where Jakes’s co-founder, Sally’s family originally called their home away from home. Romella cooked up delicious meals and the surf lulled us to sleep each evening. This somewhat Bohemian getaway is a unique and wonderful place to be.

Jake's is a beautiful, peaceful place far away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts near Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Negril. My little cottage was very clean and comfortable, and the outdoor shower was a real treat. I had a massage and body scrub at the spa, which had private outdoor treatment areas right in front of the sea. Being naked outdoors was a wonderful new experience and Shelly, my therapist was friendly and very good at her job. I agree with the things written in other "Excellent" reviews, but what I want to write about is the incredible kindness shown me by the staff of the resort. When I arrived and unpacked I discovered that I had forgotten to pack my medications. I am 69 years old, so as you can imagine, I take a lot of pills every day. The result of this oversight on my part was a medical emergency. I knew I would have to cut my vacation short and return home, so I informed the young woman at the desk that I would have to check out early as a result of my packing mistake and the serious nature of the problem. She was very sympathetic and said she would arrange things. A few minutes later the manager came to check on me and tell me that they could make an appointment for me with a doctor close by to get a prescription filled for my most essential medicines. I was wary of the idea, but she convinced me to go, made the appointment within an hour, and arranged for young man who works for the resort to take me to the doctors office in one of their vehicles. He chatted to me the whole time to keep me from being so nervous. I saw the doctor, who was also very kind, and he gave me some pills to tide me over until I could get home and a prescription to have filled there at the local pharmacy. On the way back to Jake's the driver stopped and got us ice cream. The staff continued to come by my cottage to check on me until I was able to leave the next day. This long-winded review is meant to tell you that I have never met better people in my life. You should stay at Jake's, not just because it is a wonder place, but also because you will meet some of the kindest, most generous people in the world. Some of them are named Dikeisha, Tireen, Syrecia, and Shanice.

We had a pleasant stay with our 2 year old son but the resort and the area did fall a little short of our expectations, which were based on other reviews, several article’s we’d read and other places we’ve stayed in a similar price bracket. Jakes is by no means bad but it is over priced. POSITIVE - Generally lovely staff, who were attentive and helpful. Shout out to Adrian (concierge), Andre (driver) and Dian (house keeper) who our little boy loved. - I understand the resort supports sustainability and brings a lot of money into the local economy and to its staff. - Good opportunities to meet and get to know local people. - Jakes resort had very beautiful gardens and pool. - Very efficient transfer service. - Felt safe out and about. - Pretty but rugged beaches nearby where you can swim despite my expectations. - Very fun trip to YS falls organised by resort. NEGATIVES - We stayed in SeaDragon. The cottage is nice but a bit rough round the edges. For the money it is not luxurious. Things like bed sheets and cushions were clean but look like they’ve done a few seasons. The welcome pack is falling to pieces. - No parasols by the pool, so we couldn’t sit there with our son and the resort said they couldn’t supply any. - Our cook did a shop for us based on our requested food for the week (which was by no means extravagant) and the total when we left was eye watering - more than we would pay at home. - Food at Jakes resort was average and quite expensive. Service at Jack Sprats was terribly show and again expensive. - had a disappointing meal at lovers leap, which the resort recommended. - We chose this resort based on articles we’d read saying it was child friendly. It’s staff are definitely friendly towards children but I wouldn’t say there is much for children to do at treasure beach and you need to keep a close eye on them by the main pool, which has an enormous drop into it. - The surrounding area is a bit desolate with a lot of half built construction sites. - We could hear dogs fighting and barking all night long from our cottage, which felt a bit in the middle of nowhere. In summary, we were so excited to visit Jakes but we left a little underwhelmed. It’s a unique experience but how it was voted into the top 14 family best family hotels on the world a few years back is a mystery.

My wife and I came here for a week based on all the amazing reviews. While the trip was pleasant because we love each other and always have a good time, the place itself was rather disappointing, particularly given our expectations from the reviews. We weren't looking for an active holiday, we just really wanted to chill, sit in the sun, read books, have nice dinners, swim, walk and generally take a break from our hectic lives. So we weren't too bothered by the fact that there's not much to do. This place has a kind of rustic charm, no doubt, with sort of a hippy vibe. But, honestly we wouldn't come back nor recommend it to friends. The food is ok but not great and the menu gets very repetitive - and we're definitely not food snobs. Everything is very over priced with New York City prices for both drinks and food. Feeling ripped off at every turn put a bit of a damper on things. The rooms are all unique and quirky. Basic but clean and pleasant enough (we stayed in the hotel part, not the private villas). There's a small beach a few minutes walk from the hotel. But it's a public beach so there's nothing there to sit on. There's a roped off area to swim but it's extremely shallow - too shallow to even swim when the tide is low. I appreciate the bohemian vibe but the mediocre food, the high prices and the lack of its own beach with nice swimming is a real draw back. There is a small homemade salt water pool but it was full of leaves and not very inviting. I'd really love to be more supportive of this charming small hotel, in contrast to the corporate resorts that dominate so much of the Caribbean. But the truth is it's just ok. There are also a million small homemade stairs everywhere, so be careful if you're old or unsteady. The place if fine so long as you keep your expectations low. The over the top reviews actually do this place a disservice.
