We've just returned from Theobads Estate after experiencing their afternoon tea. We had booked and it was 15 mins after the booked time that we were taken to the Charles room for the tea. This was room (very nice) with just the 2 of us rattling round in it (ok so there was a wedding in progress). We were served the tea (one pot) and told that there would be someone around if we wanted anything else. The sandwiches were not great and the cakes were similarly mediocre (brownies were particularly dry and claggy). We were a bit surprised o see a banoffee pie in the mix but that was actually quite good. The scones were the best thing there. Even the tea wasn't great. We got 2 cups each out of the pot and then I went hunting for staff to request more. Took some doing but I found someone who would get someone to get some more tea. We waited and waited and then I went out hunting again - found the same lady who was surprised no one had attended to us. She would follow up. After a further 15 mins of waiting we gave up and left. That was a dreadful experience. If this is the standard Theobalds aspires to then there are far better places to go for afternoon tea for service, quality of food and atmosphere.

Having stayed at the Theobalds Park hotel many times in the past a recent visit was very disappointing.( in the past it was owned by DeVere Hotels but has been sold) On arriving at the hotel on Friday 12 July 2019 and checking in we were informed that we were allocated rooms in the Ridings which is an annex with air-condition rooms around a central courtyard about 400 yards away from reception. We were not informed that we could drive our car over so we carried out luggage, only to find there was a car park outside where we could've driven. On entering the courtyard we saw a young man carrying stacks of chairs into a function room that adjoined our room, on entering the room it was freezing cold, dark and quite cramped. We were quite disappointed so we decided to go back to reception and see if we could be moved. On the way we asked the young man carrying the chairs what was happening and were toldthat on Saturday there is a large function in that room and they have barn doors that they are normally open because it's nice to let the airflow through and for people to gather in the court yard. Returning to reception they did manage to find us a room in the original house, it was room 209 up a lot of stairs. The room in general was in fair condition although the bed which was a double one side was only 4 inches from a side wall and in that 4 inch gap there was a pile of dust that hadn't been vacuumed for ages. On the Saturday we went out for the day and returning around 11pm every car park was full, as we got out of our car we could hear the music being played being played from the function room in the Ridings and we were entering the hotel 400 yards away!! We were so glad that we complained when we arrived on the Friday and didn't fancy staying in the room in the Ridings.

Looks very impressive from the out side however rooms do need up dating and no air con was extremely hot only a table top fan that was blowing warm air out reception staff excellent, bar staff need more on especially when it's very busy , restaurant /breakfast room staff not so quick all apart from one lady think she was restraint manager , who helped me with my gluten free requirements , and this was no problem for her , staff need to have more whits about them when clearing tables ,we asked for a lot of tea and we were brought a coffee pot had to send it back as I don't drink coffee , overall hotel very nice but need updating and rooms painting would stay here again if needed some where to stay

This was a 2nd visit where i attended a retreat. I stayed in the stables, which was unexpected as its set back away from the main building. The room was nice and clean, but maintenance is needed in the bathroom. There was a huge group of sports people staying in the stables so i had the pleasure of seeing their wetsuits and towels hung up everywhere. The restaurants food is nice, but the menu was EXACTELY the same as when i stayed last year. I know this as im vegetarian and they dont seem to be very imaginative when it comes to making food. Its a shame. The Academy is such a brilliant building for what we used it for.

We stayed for two nights for a quiet weekend break. The hotel is in fantastic settings just outside the M25 so really easy to get to. Although there were a few glitches in terms of having to change rooms (tv wasn’t working!) and deal with a fairly noisy private party ... the staff were really helpful and made any inconveniences of this evaporate. We’ll be back!
