We stayed at the Moorings the night before our landing tour of Skellig Michael. Staff was very helpful even before we arrived as they assisted with getting our landing tours booked which was a relief since we were struggling to find a boat operator with space. The room was very nice and clean with a great view of the harbor.... More

We stayed at the Moorings the night before our trip to The Skellig's. Portmagee is pretty small and just down the (or up the road depending which way your heading) from Kerry Cliffs which are beautiful! The hotel itself was clean and we had a family room between the two of us so had plenty of room. I'm not sure... More

The Moorings consists of a pub, restaurant and accomodation. This review is just of the accomodation. There are a number of rooms and it does seem to be popular. Recommendation would be to book ahead in busy months. The room we had was quiet, clean and spacious. Fairly basic but it did the job. The lights weren't very bright which... More

Portmagee is so small that the Moorings Guesthouse, bar, restaurant, and gift shop are pretty much half the town. Good thing it's a nice place to stay! Room was huge, had a couch we never used. Quiet, clean, comfortable. Assuming you're staying for a Skellig Michael trip (good luck with that), it's directly at the main Portmagee docks and a... More

A group of us arrived unannounced, on a Thursday evening, and the receptionist did her best, and was successful in getting us overnight accommodation. The rooms were more than acceptable, spacious and very clean. Put many hotels to shame. That night we all had a delightful meal, staff with enthusiasm and charm, hard to get. Breakfast was 1st class also.... More

The hotel was a wonderful boutique hotel and the restaurant was excellent. The service was personable and professional. All in all a great stay. They were also able to arrange the boat trip to Skellig Michael and were helpful with other touring activities in the area. Perfect Stay and can't wait to return.

I came here on my first night in Portmagee with a large group of family members. The staff were friendly and accommodating, especially considering we were a large number of people. We all had the fish and chips which were excellent. there were a wide variety of ales and beers to choose from too. I am sorry I did not... More

This hotel is excellent!!! Absolutely loved our time in Portmagee and Gerard the owner was super friendly. Everytime we saw him he asked how are day went and what are plans were - he shared stories relating to Star Wars and for me that was exciting as I was in Portmagee hoping to land on Skellig Michael. The rooms were... More

We stayed for 4 days end of August and had a very enjoyable stay. Breakfast tasty with plenty of choice, good choice of bar meals in the evening. We ate in the Restaurant one evening, quite expensive but it was fresh seafood. Our bedroom was large, clean and bright. Fortunately we had wonderful weather and on an evening were able... More

Friendly staff, a comfortable room, a bar with a nice atmosphere, great fish and chips & a good breakfast. Would definitely recommend. The weather to get to the Skelligs unfortunately couldn't be be guaranteed, but an enjoyable trip nonetheless.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Nestled into the picturesque seafront of Portmagee, the Moorings Guesthouse overlooks the village's busy working harbour. Just a 30 second walk from the pier, where boats leave for the Skelligs every morning, and right at the heart of village life, there's simply nowhere more convenient to base yourself when you stay in Portmagee. Offering 16 rooms in total, the owners have created a calm and surprisingly luxurious ambience through the use of traditional yet contemporary furnishings with crisp, clean lines of soft ivory against vibrant reds. The Moorings strive to deliver personal, attentive service while matching the very best standards in efficiency and attention to detail that you've encountered elsewhere. Room facilities include direct-dial telephone, satellite TV, tea- and coffee-making facilities, iron and ironing board, ensuite marble bathroom with power shower, bath, hairdryer and Gilchrest & Soames toiletries. Complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the guesthouse and there is free car parking for guests. There's nothing more endearing than knowing that some of the Hollywood's biggest movie stars like Mark Hamill and Director J.J Abrams have visited the sleepy village of Portmagee, and even sat in the Bridge Bar local pub where Mark Hamill poured a pint of Guinness behind the bar. The Moorings was home to the pre-production team of the Star Wars VII movie and you can visit the room where all the magic took place and listen to the stories told by the staff. The Moorings is open all year round. Great food served all day with traditional music at weekends. Trips to Skellig Michael can be arranged and packages are available from April to September. Cois Cuain gift shop is open from March to January. The Moorings is located in a fishing village with a working harbour, post office, general store, coffee shop, bar, restaurant overlooking Valentia Island. The Moorings received a platinum award for green hospitality in 2013. They have introduced a 'Green' package which offers two nights B&B in The Moorings Guesthouse, a guide to a wildlife shore search and a special '30 mile' menu where all main ingredients are sourced within a 30 mile radius. ... more   less
