We had a cabina close to pool but people were respectful- it was not noisey.

There is lots of lovely floral but not much fauna the 2 days we were here.

We enjoyed the cabina's hammock and ate our meals at the table on the main floor.
There were 4 dogs on the property and 2 of them joined us for meals (they were very well behaved)

We attempted to kayak to Cabuya Island at high tide but we were not successful. You can walk over at low tide. One guest told us she enjoyed snorkeling on the opposite side

The beach is pebbly and volcanic rock. Apparently you can experience nice sunrises here.

We came well stocked with food so we didn't go to any restaurants (Habitat restaurant is very close-another guest said it was great)

We didn't need to check Super David (produce) nor the bakery both are supposed to be good.

Since this is fishing village we asked Jim to where to go. He referred us to a group of fishermen just down the beach. They had nice looking tuna, durango and snapper.
We still had lots of fish from another area so we elected to go for the gigantic prawns...enough for 3 delicious meals. Cost $24 cdn total for 24 gigantic camerones!

The kitchenette is enough to "make do". We were glad we travel with our kitchen utensils, spices, oil, vinegar, foil, dish clothes, towels etc.

We were pleasantly surprised by the size of the fridge and freezer. It also has a blender (we didn't use) and a traditional Costa Rican drip coffee maker that made very yummy coffee.

The sleeping loft is up the stairs. There is a small balcony and a couple of chairs.
The queen bed was OK and there are 3 single beds (and 1 dresser.)
There isn't any A/C but we found the 2 ceiling fans and the breeze kept the room cool enough.

The small bathroom is on the main level.

I appreciated having a flashlight to move around at night.

There is a washing machine on site (if you need one) and we were able to pull our car onto the property for safe parking.

We met nice travellers here.

We mentioned to Jim the TV (news programs) was loud on our 1st day and he respectfully changed to playing music (great selection of tunes).

My wife and I spent 3 restful nights with the tree frog serenade putting us to sleep each night. What a great central location to explore the surrounding beaches, quaint pueblos, and attractions such as parks, waterfalls, etc. Within easy walking distance at low tide is Cemetery Island where graves are found from indigenous to foreigners. The 2 story " A " frame where we stayed was super clean with a convenient full kitchen and bath with hot water down and plenty of sleeping room upstairs. Jim , the on site owner was as gracious and casual as they come. Oh yeah, the pool is cleaned daily and always sparkling.

We stayed at The Howler Monkey for about 12 days and we have had a blast! Jim, the owner, has been a wonderful and interesting host. It was a magical time for us as we enjoyed all the cool extra stuff shared with us like bikes, fire pit, kayaks, poles, snorkeling gear...the list goes on. We travel a bit so Al went out of his way to make sure we were getting our value verses the list of desires most important to us and by far he found it here..hands down.
We enjoyed the hammocks for lazy reading, the beach walks and yoga reset our minds, waking up to the sun, soaking in the moon, kayaking out from the front yard whenever we wanted was such a luxury and Jim will always give you pointers on the right spots to hit. Most places charge by the hour or crazy uptight with a list of rules on equipment so we thoroughly enjoyed the no worries vibe.
The cabini we stayed in was great! The ocean breeze through the rustic kitchen windows as we cooked local fresh fish daily was a major perk to us also. We felt at home and welcomed along with a tranquil vibe. If your lucky Jim will play music for a bit which adds a festive twist to any occasion. We really appreciated all the hospitality by Jim and his sweet friendly dogs. We will definitely return and hopefully for a month next round. Pura Vida

The Howler Monkey is a very rustic place on a very beautiful ocean. Given that's it's so basic, I think the price should have been much lower.

Pros: right on the ocean, beautiful scenery, pool, each unit has a very basic kitchen, location is quiet and peaceful, wifi is good

Cons: bathrooms are disgusting with poor draining shower and window you can see into, no screens in window and no AC (there is a fan), looks much better in pictures than it is, owner is constantly drinking, entire place is junky, $10/night surcharge for more than 2 people for no reason because there is no breakfast or services

If this place were affordable, we would overlook the problems, but for the price we paid, it was not worth it. Granted, it was high season, but other places in the area were a much better value.

Hi Kabukajulie, Yes i remember you,why are you hiding behind such a horrible nickname, are you afraid to give your real name. Now first of all you say the price should be much lower,so why do you think i am full for all of high season, also i have not put my prices up for 6 years, whereas inflation has all most doubled in Costa Rica. Disgusting bathroom with poor draining shower. If you stay with 3 or 4 girls for 2 or 3 days using the same bathroom showering 2 or 3 times a day ,this is 9 to 12 showers a day,you need to reach down and pull out your hair from the drainage plug so it will not get blocked, this is just common seance, nobody has ever said my bathrooms were disgusting. Windows you cant see into,i keep it this way so the people on the street cant see your breasts. No screens in windows,I find it blocks the airflow. No A.C.i have slotted windows and doors with a top fan and side fan that is designed to allow the sea breeze to come through, and cool you .If you look back at all my reviews, you are the first to complain. Owner is constantly drinking,i haven't had a beer since last Saturday night and this is Wednesday morning.Do you see me complaining about your hard drugs intake. Also i think a beer or 3 might do you some good, lighten up a bit and stop complaining. Entire place is Junky,i dont know what that word means but it rimes with funky,it could be good in a song. I think $10 per day for each extra person is very good value. No breakfast, you get free coffee from 6am to 9am,and why have you your own private kitchen. No services, you have free WIFI,free parking, free washing machine with washing powder, free swimming pool, free maid service, free tourist information, free swap libery free bicycles, free sea kayaks with life vests, free snorkeling equipment, free fruit from my garden ,free fishing rods, free everything ,what are you talking about no services. I have had the certificate of excellence from tripadvisor for the last 6 years in a roe which is not easy to achieve. Why dont you lighten up and smell the roses, and give up the hard drugs, they dont seem to agree with you, look at the monkeys in the trees, and smile more, god your so boring. Best regards Jim O Callaghan (OWNER)

It is in the middle of nowhere- fine. We lounged around the beach all day watching the iguanas fight over mango peels-cool. It has a great pool. The cabins were a little odd. They are very rustic, the beds were comfortable, nice deck on front of cabin the down side is that the kitchen and bathroom are on the ground floor while bedroom is on the 2nd floor and the stairs are outside. So as an old guy I have to get up in the middle of the night and trek outside to the bathroom in the middle of the night (do I get dressed or sneak down in my underwear-You don’t want to know). My main dissatisfaction with the place is that the showers were absolutely cold! The instantaneous electric showerhead (boy are they scary, I had current past through my body in Mexico when using one of these as I stepped on the metal drain cover) produced no hot water whatsoever. Cabins are close together and afford little privacy. If taking the ferry to get here give yourself ample time at the ferry dock. It's a cluster. If someone wants instructions on how to not miss the ferry drop me a question I'd be happy to help. We missed the 3:00 o'clock ferry and ended up on the 5:00 o'clock. That had us driving to the Howler in the dark. Very dangerous. Narrow, curvy poorly marked road!

I stayed at the Howler monkey hotel for a few days with my girlfriend, and I could not have been happier. The hotel is located under the canopy right in front of the Cabuya playa, and is the perfect place to relax and disconnect: howler monkeys, capucins, iguanas were part of the daily spectacle above our heads. Jim is a great host, and has a ton of interesting stories to keep you busy while enjoying the pool (which he cleans twice a day btw!). You should pay attention to his 4 dogs at first, but once you get to know them they are the most adorable animals, and you feel really secure in the hotel! Take Rocky for a walk on the beach, and his extreme happiness will make you instantly happy as well!

We have taken the small cabin ("mini bungalow" on Booking), and we cannot complain given that it is almost half the price of the regular cabinas and we were on a budget. Note however that the small bungalow has no balcony, and has a less functional kitchen than the bigger ones.

Thank you Jim for everything, we hope to come back some day!

I came here with my boyfriend to relax for a few days, and I couldn’t be more satisfied! The hotel is located just in front of the beach, and surrounded by jungle trees where you can observe all kinds of animals (capuccines, howler monkeys, iguanas). Also, you sleep in a dreamy confortable wooden cabana where you have your own bathroom and kitchen, and you have access to the swimming pool and to the common living area in the middle of the property. The owner, Jim, likes to share with you tons of funny stories and precious advice. Moreover, his 4 dogs are adorable!!
Concerning the location, Cabuya honestly was perfect for us. As I said, you have the beach and the jungle just in front of the hotel, you can find restaurants and small supermarkets at less than 1km, also the Cabo Blanco natural reserve is just 2km away (and is amazing!! We have even seen a boa!). A bit further, you have the hippie town of Montezuma (7km), with its falls, and the surf beach of Santa Teresa (12km).
In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this place and try to come back myself as soon as possible! Thanks Jim!
Just a last remark: we have taken a normal cabina (compared to the mini cabina), which was a bit more expensive, but truly worth it. There’s clearly a difference of confort (space inside, light) between the two types, and we were happy to have chosen the bigger one.

We stayed at the Howler Monkey Hotel as part of our honeymoon trip and to say we were ecstatic would be an understatement.

This picturesque and unique hotel on the Nicoya Peninsula is the perfect place to spend some time in nature and appreciate the beautiful nature and wildlife Costa Rica has to offer. With the beautiful log cabins and a perfect sized pool (that is kept always in pristine condition and has a glorious orange tree hanging over to create a beautiful shade in of of the corners).

The owner Jim is a very intelligent and heartwarming man who has turned this oasis of paradise into his personal paradise. The abundance of wildlife here is spectacular, from the daily visit of Howler Monkeys, Scarlet Mackaws and Iguanas of all shapes and sizes. With the added benefit of Jim, a retired scientist from Ireland who not only has an uncapped knowledge of every creature in the vicinity but is kind and willing to share his knowledge with all of his guests.

If you are looking for a place to get away from the hustle and bustle and to enjoy a little slice of Paradise we would certainly recommend you spend some time in this beautiful part of Costa Rica. In our opinion this is the most endearing place to spend your honeymoon with your partner, you can spend time walking along the beautiful beaches and listening to the sounds of the jungle.

Jim also has big plans for the coming year to add a wonderful beach front restaurant and bar, and with the effort that Jim has put into the hotel as of yet we will sure to come back in the future to see this come to fruition.

Thanks you for a wonderful experience and a depth of knowledge we gained from staying here. We wish you all the best for the future and as promised when we have kids we will bringing them back to witness this truly wonderful hotel.

With Love
Tucker & Elisa

PS. We expect a copy of your anticipated book in the post, and that you remember us when you get famous because of it.

We stayed 5 nights in a little cabana and had a blast. In fact, Jim (the host) is an incredible person. Our trip wouldn’t have been the same if we didn’t meet him. I will remember every morning with a good coffee he makes, listening to all his interesting and funny stories. The place itself is also really nice, never felt so close to nature: we saw monkeys, birds, butterflies, iguanas EVERYDAY and could go buy the most fresh fish on the beach, which is litteraly on the property. Oh and i almost forgot his dogs, that were so cute and adorable. I stayed five days, which I thought at the beginning was enough, but finally it wasn’t because I really fell in love with the place. Highly recommand.

We stayed 5 night‘s - the kids enjoyed the pool, the dogs & and the „cozy nest“ upstairs in the cabana.
Jim is a nice person - he loves nature and is therefore always good for some stories about insects, local wildlife & geology (besides others). He brews coffee in the morning which is ready when you get up 😊.
There were two cooks (temporary) during our stay who cooked lovely food which we could enjoy right at the beach.
Thank‘s Jim & Crew & happy Trails
