Back in January I returned to Puerto López after 5 years and to my surprise, the waterfront (malecón) had changed a lot. It had become too noisy and preferred a hotel a bit more distant from the center. My brother recommended that we stayed at Hostería La Terraza as he was very satisfied with it in his previous visits. Unlike most hotels in Puerto López, Hostería La Terraza is a bit "left of the stoplight", meaning it's not in the center, but up in the hills that overlook the town. This is a great advantage as you get to enjoy a wonderful view of the town and are away from all the noise: An ideal place to relax. The owners are very flexible and easygoing, always willing to help out with your requests which makes your stay great. Rooms are in different bungalows at a reasonable distance from one to the other which gives you a great sense of privacy. They have private bathrooms, air conditioning, tv and wi-fi. The bungalows also have a porch with chairs and hammocks. The main building has a generous dining area with a great view, and is ideal to read, relax, have a cup of coffee. Perhaps the most attractive feature is the hotel's infinity swimming pool which overlooks the town and the ocean. Along with the pool you have a jacuzzi and a generous area where you have some sunbeds and tables. One can enjoy the sunset and be there until night. The hotel grounds have a lot of vegetation so if you like birds, you'll get to see quite a few of them, especially around the pool area. An ample private parking lot makes everything a whole lot easier if you travel in a car. Price is higher than other hotels in town, but you definitely get what you pay for: A great hotel worth every penny. If you are traveling on a budget and on foot this is not the best option as you have quite a hike from the main road to the hotel. Moto-taxis can take you but for about 2 dollars per ride. But if your budget allows it, I definitely recommend this option.

Very clean accommodation, everything well kept and functioning very well (German maintenance). They organized trips for us which worked well. Great views and nice, big infinity pool and garden. Unfortunately, though distant from main roads quite noisy during the day due to position on a hill overseeing the city Very high price compared to other accommodations in town. Food was OK, but breakfast quite boring (always the same) and portions quite small. German efficiency, but lack of latino feeling by hosts (very reserved). Good for people who do not speak Spanish.

At first sight La Terraza looks like a beautiful site and a great place to relax and spend your holidays. However, there are a lot of issues and therefor it, in our opinion, does not deserve the number of stars it has. 1. Even though the views are nice, the site is far from the beach and it is a steep walk. You can take a taxi though. 2. The jacuzzi was empty and the pool was not clean (greenish on the bottom). Did one of the co-workers just throw some powder in the pool to clean it out, while we were relaxing at the poolside? We didn’t feel comfortable to go in... The day we left it looked clean again. 3. Rooms are very basic and small! A double bed and a bunk bed were placed in the room. No room for potting your suitcases! And how do you ever fit 4 people in there? And why then only 2 chairs on the terrace? We advice to remove the bunk bed. 4. The bath room is really small! We could not make use of the bathroom at the same time. 5. No hot water at the sink. How is that possible? 6. Conversation during breakfast: - Would you like coffee or tea? - Do you have cappuccino? - Yes, but you’ll have to pay extra. - Would you like your eggs baked, boiled or scrambled? - Scrambled please. - Would you like ham and cheese with that? - Only cheese please - Okay, but that’ll cost you extra. - Then I’ll take a plain omelet. Really? 7. The owners are willing to do things for you if you ask them, but we felt like it was a burden for them. So we stopped asking. 8. No regular dinner service at the hotel (only if you ask for it early morning and they have the staff), so you’re forced to go out every day or plan your day way in advance. Some good things: view, gardens, wifi. Bottom line: we expected (much!) better value for the money we paid.

The good: Nice view, quite, good breakfast. The bad: 1) There were cockroaches in our room (or whatever the equivalent named bug is down here). Many cockroaches, 10-20 over the course of one evening and the next morning. The hostess came and sprayed some repellent down the drains but the next morning I found some more in my bags. Will have to clean out my bags and repack when we get to the next hotel. My brother who was travelling with us is allergic to cockroaches, however the hostess refused to give us a different room. 2) As others have stated, the beds are not great. Small and stiff, with a tinny single person duvet that I struggled to stay under (am a 1.8m 70kg male, so not exactly big). 3) The food left much to be wanted. We ordered the shrimps for dinner and got 10 tinny shrimps with some white salty rice and lettuce/carrots shavings mix. Total of maybe 150g of protein, 200g of starch, and a sprinkle of veggies. We had a large lunch so was fine, but definitely be aware. 4) Really expensive - was $194 for one night for a room for 3 people. For the price really not worth it. 5) Ice cold host. Overall, if not for the bugs in the room this still would have been a 3 star review considering the price for what we got.

I stayed here for one night, which was too short. Petra and Werner could not have been more hosbitable and accommodating. Every meal we had was well prepared and delicious, my grilled shrimp was to die for! I stayed in #4, which had a great view over the pool, town and ocean. There was a great breeze during the night, and along with the comfy bed, I slept like a baby. I am not a dog lover, but their dogs never bothered us, and laid in their beds most of the time. I would highly recommend staying here, I can't wait to go back.
