The Bear in Cowbridge was perfect for our short stay. The area is lovely with great resteraunts and shops. The hotel and rooms were quite and peaceful with great derive from the staff. Cowbridge itself is wonderful and Cardiff is only a short bus ride away with all it has to offer.

Visited the Bear Hotel for a Family Party and really enjoyed our stay. The bedrooms have been refurbished and the food and service were First Class. Easy car parking at the hotel and being in the centre of the high street you can visit the shops and take a look around the area.

We sometimes make a special trip to the area and the Sunday Lunch at The Bear is good value for money even though just under £11 for the main it is a little more expensive than some. We made such a trip today and managed to find a nice table. Immediately ordered two beef dinners at the bar. Had about...

We have stayed here in various guises for many years but this Valentine's Day my wife had (two) very disappointing meals which were sorted by the restaurant manager in a very professional way: eventually. This could have ended very differently because it involved an allergy. Perhaps there should be greater liaison with the chef rather than a flippant 'oh, we...

We had booked a suite for my birthday. The "suite" was more like a room from an American motel. Overlooking the car park. Not the best way to start the break. We did complain and to be fair we were moved to a better room but this was still a bit worn and dated. The breakfast was poor. The bars...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Bear has origins as far back as the 12th Century, but it's best known as the inn where they changed the horses on the mail run from Cardiff to Swansea. This famous Coaching Inn is steeped in history. Nowadays, this privately owned 3 star hotel is famed for its fine home-cooked food, friendly atmosphere and really good ale. During the 18th Century, Napoleon's troops were held in the 'Bear Pit' en route to London after a failed invasion at Fishguard! The Bear rests in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, surrounded by beautiful rural hills. The Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Valleys are close by, with breathtaking views. Some of the Valleys still have the mining houses visible as you drive through. The hotel is on the main high street of the historic town of Cowbridge. This chic market town boasts some fabulous boutique shops, lingering walks around the Roman wall and some of the most beautiful town-houses. ... more   less
