The Bear has origins as far back as the 12th Century, but it's best known as the inn where they changed the horses on the mail run from Cardiff to Swansea. This famous Coaching Inn is steeped in history. Nowadays, this privately owned 3 star hotel is famed for its fine home-cooked food, friendly atmosphere and really good ale. During the 18th Century, Napoleon's troops were held in the 'Bear Pit' en route to London after a failed invasion at Fishguard! The Bear rests in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, surrounded by beautiful rural hills. The Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Valleys are close by, with breathtaking views. Some of the Valleys still have the mining houses visible as you drive through. The hotel is on the main high street of the historic town of Cowbridge. This chic market town boasts some fabulous boutique shops, lingering walks around the Roman wall and some of the most beautiful town-houses.

Enjoyed our stay at The Bear Inn in Cowbridge very much. Staff is friendly and helpful, rooms are spotless and the beds are extremely confortable. Also the hotel-owned parking area is practical. Cowbridge is a very pleasant little village with good shops.

Staff very helpful, room very comfortable and food excellent. This is a great old style hotel, well situated, well placed car park behind the hotel. They cater very well for groups (I was part of a creative workshop) and I would imagine treat couples and single guests very well

Had a lovely family gathering at this hotel. The rooms were great, especially the amazing shower. Some of my family stayed in the self catering apartments which were beautiful and comfortable. The staff were really lovely and helpful, would definitely book again.

Another good lunch at this very comfortable venue. Service standards were very good and, apart from some of the vegetables served being a little cold, the food was really good. Looking forward to our next visit
