Now most of the reviews about The Bear hotel involve an overnight stay. I only went with family for Sunday lunch so bear with me. The good stuff - a gorgeous hotel & grounds, really very picturesque. We were whisked in pretty quickly and seated at a large comfortable table. The food was fantastic & I would recommend trying the... More

We stayed here for our friends wedding on 25th/26th August. During the meal at the wedding they were giving out bread to everyone. I'd been given soup to start and asked if they did gluten free bread. They went to check and came back with some for me. Then during the main meal they brought out gravy so I asked... More

I stayed over bank holiday weekend where my friends got married. The venue was great, staff very friendly and a thoroughly enjoyable stay. I would happily stay here again and would recommend the venue to family and friends. The breakfast is a post wedding live saver!!

I stayed here for one night in a room at the back which was very comfortable except there was a nasty coffee stain on the wall which I photographed and showed to reception. The only problem with a room at the back is that there is a noise tunnel and you can hear people in the kitchen area. The breakfast... More

The Bear Hotel is a traditional pub but with a great vaulted restaurant area. Quality food and real ale,not cheap but we had a great weekend! I think there are about 30 rooms, we were in no.35, a little worn around the edges but clean, comfortable and quiet. Nice friendly staff. Free parking. Will stay again if in Cowbridge area.

Attended a friend’s wedding at the Bear staying two nights at the end of July. Had a wonderful stay with friendly staff members and a good room overlooking the hotel courtyard. I think the hotel staff made a great effort to make us feel very welcome. The venue for the wedding was excellent with a well organised staff group attending... More

Perfect for an overnight business trip - very friendly staff and very nice food. Private car park with easy access. Rooms fine if a little tired but absolutely fine. Plenty of private areas for a quiet drink and also a lively bar and nice courtyard.

I visit here a few times a week. I love the friendly staff and laid back atmosphere. The owner is really nice too. Well worth a visit. Only wish they would put the newspaper rack back up and get a few more copies of the Daily Mail in!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Bear has origins as far back as the 12th Century, but it's best known as the inn where they changed the horses on the mail run from Cardiff to Swansea. This famous Coaching Inn is steeped in history. Nowadays, this privately owned 3 star hotel is famed for its fine home-cooked food, friendly atmosphere and really good ale. During the 18th Century, Napoleon's troops were held in the 'Bear Pit' en route to London after a failed invasion at Fishguard! The Bear rests in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, surrounded by beautiful rural hills. The Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Valleys are close by, with breathtaking views. Some of the Valleys still have the mining houses visible as you drive through. The hotel is on the main high street of the historic town of Cowbridge. This chic market town boasts some fabulous boutique shops, lingering walks around the Roman wall and some of the most beautiful town-houses. ... more   less
