We stayed here for one night and considered this B&B as a reasonable place within 1 hour from the airport and away from traffic jams. Be aware - we will have to drop the car at pay parking and the go up through the stone stairs and this can be difficult with baggage. Nevertheless: you will have a chance to spend the night in the nice small old city, to have an lovely dinner in local osteria and to wake up with a beautiful view to the valley. I think it worth. The hotel is clean, the staff is very friendly. WiFi is in place too but do you really need it here? Oh, sorry, of course to send some pics to Instagram like me ( byworker ) .... Excellent.

Stopped at artena en route to Paestum. Il Monaco is a beautiful little hotel and the staff were very friendly. Equally great trattoria just metres away. Nothing else to do in artena but have a beautiful meal and good night's sleep.

Fantastic little, charming and completely renovated hotel located on a hill side overlooking the Roman countryside. Our room was spacious (two floors), had a fantastic view (even from the bathroom), and was absolutely spotless. And for a really good price! Service was great, and breakfast was ok, too (but simple). There is free parking on the main piazza a hundred meters or so from the hotel. The climb up the small, cobbled walking streets with suitcases is not fun, but the hotel can arrange for a donkey to assist, if given notice in advance. Artena is an hour drive (some 50km) from Fiumicino airport, so a great alternative to an airport hotel or to staying in central Rome. Recommended? Absolutely! Would we stay again? Definitely.

We ended up choosing Artena by default, as we were driving to Rome and looking for a place to stay "half way". We had no idea what we would stumble across, but we got VERY lucky! Artena itself is a charming little Italian village, where donkey's still deliver everything from luggage to groceries. The Il Monaco was such a TREAT! our room was really beautiful and comfortable, much nicer than expected. From our balcony we had a great view over the town. Particularly charming at night. The most impressive was the fantastic service! IF you arrive late in Artena with your car, parking will be literally impossible. The girl at the reception gave up her parking spot so we could park there. She had a good 30 minute walk back to town for it all! amazing. We wouldn't necessarily go back to Artena for anything in particular, but we would just to stay at the Il Monaco and RELAX!

We spent one night at this hotel as we traveled up from the Amalfi Coast. Rather than stay in Rome the night before our flight out of Italy, we chose to stay in Artena, about a 45 minute drive from the Rome FCO airport. After spending 3 weeks in Italy, this was a highlight of our trip. This boutique hotel has only 5 rooms and is family owned. I had booked this through booking.com, and was contacted directly by the hotel about 3 weeks before our arrival date letting me know there was going to be a festival in town the night of our arrival and the streets would be closed and parking would be a challenge. They kindly offered to meet us at a place where we could park for free, at our convenience and would take us to the hotel. They met us in the afternoon and Maria welcomed us and told us some of the history of Artena, mentioning it has been used in movie sets and they still have Princess that resides in the palace. She shared about her village with such passion, you couldn't help but fall in love with the town that is filled with old stone steps. The hotel pictures online don't do it justice...it has tons of character and has been restored to a very high standard with modern amenities. They had a baby crib ready for our 11 month old son and recommended a restaurant (about a 2 min walk from the hotel - seemed to be the only restaurant in the old town) - Locanda de Principe where we had lunch ( and also had some of the best food we've had in Italy). We attended the festival which was a religious procession I think the whole town attended...coincidentally were next to a woman in the crowd who entertained our son, who we later figured out was the owner of Il Monaco. We returned to the hotel in the evening and were having some sandwiches in the sitting room while our baby slept...and the owner came and offered us some proscuitto and melon. In our travels, we found that the beds in Italy seem to be very firm and not all that comfortable. This was not the case at Il Monaco, the bed was very comfortable and our room had a charming "faux balcony" that overlooked the charming streets of Artena. The morning included breakfast where they made us cappuccino's, had fruit, pastries, proscuitto, etc. The owner and the staff spent the morning entertaining our son while we ate breakfast and even gave him a little toy car and some cookies for the trip. While this was only a one night stopover on our way to Rome, I wish we could have extended our stay at Il Monaco. The Italian hospitality was unmatched and was a fantastic way to end our 3 weeks in Italy.
