A friend told us it was clean and good breakfast which was true. The price was a bit high for a private room with bathroom and we were able to spend another $20USD and get a way nicer place. It was a great location and ideal for someone looking to crash but close to the beach. The water restrictions also made it tough as they shut off the water and thought it would be back on by 5:30AM as told but didn't come on until 2 hrs later. Breakfast was delicious but staff weren't the friendliest. I've stayed in lots of hostels throughout south America and this one had everything necessary just wasn't for us. Wifi was also spotty.

We had found this place online and as we were arriving late we just needed a place to stay and thought this place will do. We stayed in a private room, baring in mind costa rica is pretty pricey anyway, there is not a chance they could charge $40 a night for there room i dont think it had even been cleaned! It was filthy, toilet seat was all gruby and they even gave us stained sheets and moldy pillows. No soap or towels, The room stank also. Breakfast was included which is always a good thing, but even that was a disappointment as my pancake was not even cooked in the middle. I dont know how they can charge so much for such poor efforts! Stayed one night and had to leave first thing in the morning, disgusting! Dont waste your time or money here it is not worth it. Many other places to stay that is definitely worth the money.

Stayed at Tranquilo Jan 2017 and really enjoyed it. The layout of the hostel is pretty neat, 2 floors open to the outside, and all rooms have a hammock on their deck along with table. There are 2 bathrooms for the hostel to share, one for men and one for women. Beach is very close, waves are big however it is definitely more of a surfer's paradise. I don't surf so I found it a little hard to find an area where I wouldn't be in someone's way. Lots of restaurants nearby and some good local ones that are cheap (called Soda's) Breakfast was included when we went, they say "pancakes" but it's crepes. You get one crepe with fruit, we had pineapple and banana, then the rest would be plain without fruit. Would recommend for someone looking to experience real Costa Rica away from the touristy areas.

I stay here every year since David and his former partner first opened it.I love the fact that they have real hot water and there is no micro wave, so you have to cook your food-Old School style. There is free breakfast which consist of pancakes with fruit,,but I preferred, to cook my own breakfast.I also like the fact that sometimes we cook community meals, and almost anything is a cause for celebrations whether it's a birthday or we've run out of bananas. The owner also works on keeping the noise down, after 11:00 p.m, by encouraging people to go to a man cave he build right above the office to drink and play pool.Oh! they do not accept credit cards only cash.

Stayed for a night, friendly staff and nice kitchen. Could do with a microwave however. Breakfast you have to cook yourself however it is supplied. The showers need sorting and fixing and I think it is in the process of doing so. Also I think we were the only guests staying so very quiet. This place has lots of potential if the bathrooms are sorted and maybe kitchen improved and I'm sure in high season it will be very nice.

There are many better places near by to stay. At first glance the place looks decent and they supposedly have free breakfast. However after spending a few days here, I realized you can't judge this book by it's cover. Pros: +good location +cheap Cons: -dirty (dirt, dead bugs, dust, etc) -shared bathroom is horrible (1 shower broken, shower door rotted away, no shower heads, graffiti all over bathroom walls) -no AC -everything seems to be broken. Fans in room barely blow air, light bulbs burnt out, wires sticking out of walls -bugs, bugs, bugs! I know this is jungle, but after waking up with about 15 bug bites I discovered a giant hole in the screen for bugs to come in. The lack of cleanliness of the property may invite more bugs. -matresses and pillows look like a crime scene -"free breakfast" seems to be non-existent. I stuck around for a couple hours in the morning and no one was to be found. On my way out a bunch of locals showed up after surfing and it appeared as if breakfast started then. I guess free breakfast for the local friends? A little elbow grease would go a long way here. This place could be great but those that work here (still not exactly sure who does) don't seem to care. I wasn't even greeted with a simple hello when I'd come and go. Many more places within walking distance that are affordable and much better.

The hostel is hidden behind the main road but still is in a great location. It is about 100m from the beach and has all sorts of shops right next to it. They offer parking space, big kitchen and a lot of space with chairs, hammoks and benches. You can choose between shared room with bathroom or shared without. So far, good. The only thing I had difficulties with, is the rule, that you always have to pay before lunchtime for the next day. If you don't, they will give the bed to someone else. This policy is nice if you are travelling alone and if you are flexible, because they can't make a reservations. Since the hostel is in Santa Teresa, a place that is hard to reach and the hostels easily get crowded in high season, you might want a safe bed if you go there. It is a great spot to stay and the people are chill, but the policy doesn't assure you a bed if you travel there

Tranquilo Backpackers is easily one of the best hostels I've stayed at. Two levels of accommodation set out in a spacious airy building overlooking a huge old mango tree. Each room has a hammock and outdoor table, the beds are comfy and the fans work well. The hostel has a central open-air kitchen which is well equipped and has free coffee and pancakes in the morning. Normally pancakes don't really rock my socks but when you combine it with free fresh mangos straight from the tree it's pretty magical. The bathrooms are basic and clean. Showers are only available between 6-9am and 6-9pm due to the extreme water shortage in Santa Teresa. It is such a dusty town! There's a ping pong table and a computer room available for guests and the wifi is decent. Major highlight of staying here was watching to howler monkeys and iguanas cruising around the mango tree gobbling the fruit. So awesome! Sadly this was my first experience of the dreaded bed bugs. I got smashed with 100s of bites. The staff were great though, immediately giving us a new room and removing the infected mattress. No problems the next night. The hostel is 5 minutes walk from Playa Carmen surf beach and is right next door to a great supermarket.

Cleanliness = 4/5 - Really nice and Clean environment. The shared bathrooms/showers were not very clean. The private bathrooms were much nicer. Hospitality = 5/5 - Staff were friendly and very accommodating. Free delicious breakfast every morning consisted of a pancake with fruit and coffee LOCATION = 5/5 - 2 minute walk to the beach, right next to a convenience store and on the main strip. This place also has a huge communal kitchen. Parking is also available. Wifi = 1/5 - Barely ever seemed to work, you would get 1 or 2 bars but no real connection Thank you come again? = YES come again Shared Washroom was $39USD, Private washroom was $44USD per night for 2 people.

+Close to the Beach +Free breakfast +Price -Bedbugs -Unhelpful receptionist (Most of the straff were nice) -Loud -Dirty -Worst showers ever (no hot water and dirty) Alot of people had diarrhea and it felt more like a hospital than a hostel. Think they atleast should have soap in the toilets because such diseases spread by bad hygiene.
