Batik is one of the most serene, beautiful places to stay on Playa Hermosa near busy Santa Teresa! Every detail of the property is cared for and maintained. The casita was well stocked, very comfortable with good screens on the windows and doors. The property is very quiet with a relaxing space to lie in the hammock in the shade. We attended a wonderful yoga class taught by Nancy on the beautiful shaded yoga deck. The staff was exceptional. We love to cook and were able to use the wood burning grill in the evening. The beach is a 5 minute walk. You do need a car to get into the main part of town.

Batik was a gem. An incredible stay, with a jungle feel just walking distance from one of the most beautiful and wild beaches on earth, Hermosa. Batik has the highest quality in terms of design, service, comfort, cleanliness. We stayed in Casita Macondo and loved the open structure and outdoor table, hammok and shower. We also had good wifi for our work needs.
Augustine is the most welcoming person and is amazing at supporting any need (from best restaurant recommendations to connecting with local fishermen), always with a contagious smile.
We took surf lessons from a great local instructor David Steller from lowtidecr.com, he was really good at providing tailored coaching and sharing his love for the ocean.
Would highly recommend the full experience!

We returned from our Costa Rican vacation a couple of weeks ago, and we rented Batik Blue and Casa Mali for a group of seven of us, all adults, and from two different families. The arrangement was perfect for our group, because it gave each family their own space, and privacy, while being steps away from each other should we wish to dine/swim/hang out together. My husband and I had stayed at Batik Blue two years ago, and liked it so much that we came back, and brought more people with us! The property has a very Zen, minimalist feel...bamboo partition walls, open air living, except for the bedrooms, which are fully air conditioned. Even the bathrooms are open to the stars at night, while still maintaining complete privacy. The kitchens are well stocked, c/w an oven a the Batik, which we actually even made use of this time. Some of us enjoyed the pool in the hot afternoons, and spent a lot of time just hanging out and keeping cool. There is a beautiful yoga (is it called an asana?) on the property, complete with beautiful Balinese buddhas. Actually Balinese furnishings are a theme with the properties. Very peaceful feeling.
It is only a short walk to the very expansive, clean beach, through a short jungle path.
Cristina and Dante are lovely people and very conscientious owners, and Dahlia, the concierge, is a wealth of information and extremely helpful. She would stop by in the mornings to see what we wanted to do for the day. She would then line up surf boards, massages, horseback riding, restaurant reservations, yoga classes, various tours, or whatever your fancy! She is also very knowledgeable about directions to airports, restaurants, etc. and the time it takes to get places. By the time you leave, you feel you've found a new friend. With so much to see in the world, I am not usually one to want to go to the same place more than once, but even though we've already been there twice, I don't think we're done with it!

We could not be happier with our trip. This year we wanted a low-key family vacation, where we could do as much or as little as we wanted, after last year staying in full service Eco hotels in the Cloud Forest and Quepos. Santa Teresa is still enough off the beaten path that you don't feel overrun with tourist and tourist infrastructure. The good and the bad is the dirt road connecting everything. The good part about it is that it's still rural enough to keep the masses away, but the bad is that you get tired of driving it, along with everyone else.

Batik itself is, quite simply, amazing. We stayed in Batik Blue, which for our family of 5 was perfect. Our 11 year old boy must have spent 20+ hours in the small private pool in the center of the residence. Our 17 year old daughter got the tan she wanted. Our 14 year old daughter got the tan and the pool. Open air, unbelievably beautiful layout, with 3 air conditioned bedrooms.

The beach is a 5 minute walk through the jungle, where you will often see white faced monkeys (capuchin), and maybe howlers. Playa Hermosa is as beautiful, relaxing, and (if you so choose), challenging for surfers as anywhere in the world. Sand is powder soft. Surf is challenging. Australian expat Mick is an amazing surfing instructor. Ask Manager Dahlia to arrange a lesson with him. A certain Super Bowl winning, future hall of fame QB has a home about 1km up the hill, and had surf instruction with Mick on the day after us, on the same beach. It really can not be better. Make sure to book an Eco tour with Jeppo of Olingo Surf and Nature Experiences. Dahlia can book it for you. The nature walk/kayak tour of Curú is highly recommended.

Manager Dahlia (UK expat) is sweet, professional, and did everything to make our trip easy and fun. She checked on us daily, and took care of anything we needed. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The accommodations are first class, clean, 1st world. The wifi is greatly appreciated and bug-free, as cell signals are weak at the property (you need to go up the hill or to the beach to make a cell call--I have 3 different international phones/carriers and none worked on the property itself). The pool is serviced 2X a week, and the linens, bathrooms, and general cleaning is excellent and daily.

Make sure to bring plenty of cash, as most restaurants and activities do not accept credit cards, and the ATM in town was down 2 of the 7 days we were here. It is a vacation rental, not a full service hotel, so be prepared to buy groceries and cook, combined with eating out. Koji Sushi, a 5 minute drive, is the best sushi I have ever had, having extensive international travel on multiple continents. Restaurant options are fantastic, and much better than one would expect given the remoteness. The Bakery at the crossroads in town is excellent, clean, professional, and air conditioned.

Overall, we loved it, and almost certainly will be back.

I just returned from a fantastic week's vacation in Costa Rica. We stayed in the Casa Macondo. We were 4 adults and one child. Our stay was without a doubt, the best that we've ever experienced. Even before we left Toronto, our concierge Isabella handled everything that we needed - cabs from Tambour airport to Batik, a car rental which was waiting for us once we arrived at the casa, a stocked kitchen since we arrived late in the day and she answered all my questions promptly about the house and adventures that we were interested in.

Isabella met us at the house upon our arrival and made us feel very welcome. She also popped by each morning too to see how we were doing and if there was anything we needed.

Casa Macondo was stunning. It was beautifully decorated, Each bedroom provided enough privacy and the bathrooms which were half outdoors was a neat treat. We loved the indoor/outdoor living and the pool was incredible. My 6 year old spent hours and hours swimming and playing in the pool everyday. We didn't feel the need to leave the house really at all (except to go to the beach in the late afternoon) because it was so relaxing and breathtaking.

The beach was a short 5 minute walk along the pebbled path in the compound and then another short walk through a jungle path. We were lucky to see howler and white faced monkeys in the trees on our last day. The beach is by far one of the most beautiful that I've ever seen. It was wide and long which was great for early morning walks. My son and I spent hours playing in the surf in the late afternoons until the sun went down and even tried boogie boarding.

My sister, son and I decided to go on one adventure. Isabella again, arranged all the details for us. We went to Curu National park where we went snorkeling and and a hike through the grounds of the park. Our guide, Marcelo picked us up early and was the perfect host. After snorkeling and seeing some amazing fish, we stopped at a private beach for a few hours to soak up more sun and have a fruit snack which Marcelo provided. A delicious lunch was provided back at the park before our hike through the grounds of the plantation. We saw monkeys, birds, butterflies of stunning colours, lizards and even lizards that could run across water - fittingly called "Jesus Christ Lizards". It was a little expensive but seeing as it was the only adventure we did, we felt it was worth every colones.

Santa Teresa is a cute little town, filled with surfers and yoga instructors. There are shops, cute restaurants, banks, supermarkets and even a pharmacy. Everyone is laid back and so friendly. We ate twice at the cutest little restaurant within walking distance of Batik called Couleur Cafe. The owner Sabastien sat and spoke with us for quite a while, telling us about his life in France and then in Costa Rica. The girls who served us at the restaurant were friendly and helpful as well.

The roads are a little bumby to say the least but it's all part of the charm of Costa Rica. We even had to drive through a river which was a first for me.

I really don't have enough good things to say about Batik. It was perfect. If you are looking for a little piece of heaven, this is it!!!

We found Batik after doing a lot of research. We wanted a home that would accomodate our adult children and granddaughter.

This part of Costa Rica is not for the faint of heart. Travelling by car is challenging. Once we all arrived safely from all parts of the US, we settled into the perfect home in a perfect location. Beach is picture perfect. Accommodations were stellar and owners delightful.

We hate to share our little hideaway but in all fairness to the owners, here it is.

Magnificent!

My wife and I just spent 10 wonderful days at Batik in S.ta Teresa, Costa Rica.

The place is amazing. It could have been the backdrop for the film "Cast Away".

The location is so remote - the roads to get here are not even paved - that it makes you feel like you really got away from the “real” world, leaving your cares and stress behind.

Having said that, the lodging we stayed at was sheer luxury: exotic, elegant, beautiful, safe, comfortable, clean, and at just a one-minute walk from the beach. The pool-side living room (with no walls, open to the surrounding nature) was where we spent most of our time, with Cristina and Dante, our wonderful hosts.

If Cast Away in a luxurious setting doesn’t sound like an oxymoron, this is what a stay at a Batik lodge will bring you.

I had the very distinct pleasure of booking a Batik Blue... It was heavenly, "pura vida" and truly exceptional.

The villa (and all of the villas) are stunning. Set in the jungle, steps from the beach with open living spaces and comfortable bedrooms. Each room has a hammock. The kitchen is perfectly functional and the bathrooms are soooo good! They are outdoors but private and you basically shower in a garden.

I was expecting that having to walk a 5-minute path down to the beach would be annoying, but it was quite the opposite. It's a lovely stroll through the jungle. Close enough to carry your surfboard and a beach chair. Incidentally, this portion of Playa Hermosa beach is stunning (and the water is warm and fun...)

Perhaps the best part of the experience was the friendly and informative Isabella, the property manager and concierge. She took care of every detail with style and grace. She did not miss a beat and anticipated our needs before we even realised. Isabella's yoga (Nancy), massage and surf recommendations (Quique) were all perfect.

Batik is like a private residence with hotel-style concierge services. It's located at the north end of the small town and very close to two of the best restaurants in the area (Koji for sushi, where we ate almost every night) and Colour Cafe (where we at almost daily).

This is a great place to stay and if you read this review, keep it to yourself so that I don't have a problem booking next time.

This place left me speechless. I don't want to give away this gem in hopes that it is available when I go again. But It deserves the High praise it earned.
My wife and I spent 7 romantic days alone here until the kids flew in. The family then stayed another 7 days. Immaculate homes and grounds were looked after by friendly and professional craftsmen and women.
This place is world class. I couldn't imagine a better location or nicer facilities.
Thank you all for making our stay a memory of a lifetime.
We stayed at Casa Mali but all four of these homes were five star. The website pictures don't due these properties justice.
Congratulations Batik!
