Dons lodge was the rustic, chilled, nature immersive escape we needed for two days near the beach. Basic but wonderful. Clean lodging, quiet accommodation with the no alarms needed as the sweet calls of birds wake you gently. Staff were OK - messed up a taxi booking the day we were leaving, luckily we asked about it the night before or it would’ve left a sour taste in our mouth if we’d had to have waited for a taxi at 6am that wasn’t coming!
Wait, what year is it, 1970? I stepped out of the van and entered my past without even smoking anything. My daughter had only been here once for a week and everyone greeted her like family. It’s located right on the main road but as soon as you enter you’re in a little oasis of pathways with hammocks, tropical plants and local fruit trees. There are hostel rooms in the front and tree houses in the back. We stayed 3 nites in the tree house which was fun with fans and then upgraded to a little apt with ac, a kitchen and 2 bedrooms. There’s a communal kitchen that is so pleasant to use. The rooms are very clean and the staff is so pleasant and accommodating. Also there is a yoga spot way up high among the trees where they offer free classes or you can use on your own. The instructor is well trained in various schools of yoga and is very attentive to your individual needs. I’m 66 and was a bit worried that everyone would say “ oh no my mom’ and/or abuela is here” , but haven’t gotten that feeling at all. The best part is that i took a surf lesson from one of their instructors and got up the first time!…
Over the last twelve or thirteen years I've probably visited Don Jons more than anyone else on the planet. I brought my daughter first when she was 9 and damn, somehow she's now 23. 20 or so stays at Jons through the years is no exaggeration. Everyone associated with Don Jons have truly become family and that absolutely includes the travelers from around the globe that return year after year attracted to the same magic that keeps us buying those southbound plane tickets as well. The accommodations, the vibe, the staff, the surf, the travelers. I love this place. Pura Vida
we booked a three bed room and got a beautiful room in a big wooden house. we had to walk through the huge garden full of trees and plants, it‘s a nice place! for our 3 nights we enjoyed our big beds and our own bathroom. also we enjoyed the hammock on our small patio and our own private fridge. it would have been great if there was soap in the toilet. I was a bit disappointed by the common kitchen. the equipment was not enough and there is no common fridge to cool your food.
I cant get this place out of my head. The atmosphere, the people, the community. Don Jon's is one of a kind. Surfers of all types (beginners, pro's etc.) hit the waves together and chill in the hammocks afterwards. Animals run abundantly. Monkeys laugh in the trees. You feel completely at home; everyone feels like family. The dorm room is big enough to have your own space and the air conditioner makes sleeping comfortable. The washrooms can be a bit stinky and the shower doesn't have hot water, but this doesn't matter at all. Don Jon's is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed at, and I would go back again in a heartbeat.
