Starting off with communication with the hosts, Jared and Marieke. They are accessible, professional, responsive, and intuitive. They were open, warm and welcoming into their family/B and B. They live on the top floor with their three young kids and two dogs.

First the B and B is a relatively small hotel/BB, tastefully well furnished. The rooms have AC and high quality linens/comforters as well as maid service daily.

The food was fabulous, mostly vegetarian, although with a few meat options and always delicious and healthy. (Marieke will ask about your dietary preferences upon booking). Lucero provides breakfast and lunch, with dinner on your own in town.

Surfing: Lucero/Santa Teresa is lucky to have several breaks of differing abilities nearby. Jared is the surf coach/teacher, and he offers a safe, fun way to learn to surf or to surf better!! The camp is suitable for beginners (adults/kids) through intermediate/advanced surfers. I surf most weekends at home (California), and my goal was to get more comfortable on a shorter board. Jared, listened, watched me surf, and was intuitive in helping me improve. It felt more like I was surfing with good friends (friends who surf a LOT better than my usual surf buddies do!) Just a great experience!

One highlight of the trip was a quad trip to the waterfalls at Montezuma! It was an adventure and great to see wildlife (howler monkeys, etc) in their natural environment!!

Over-all I really can't say enough about the experience!!

Before this trip, I had never traveled to Costa Rica. Marieka was extremely helpful and patient with me while planning transportation and answering all of my questions before arrival.
The location is within walking distance of two beach walkways/entrances, a plethora of restaurant options, cute shops, extra activities, and a grocery store.
If you don’t feel like going anywhere, you’ll be completely happy with your room, hammock, pool, and abundant greenery around Lucero.
Everyday we were served breakfast and lunch with the freshest fruits and yummy local cuisine.
We were given options to join other activities like yoga, snorkeling, massage, or zip line tour on top of our surf lessons. If there’s something you want to do, Marieka can get it set up for you.
Jared and his surf instructors were not only experienced professionals, but exude passion for the sport and the water. I personally worked with Jared, Armondo and Juan, each instructor not only made surfing possible, but safe and FUN!
By the time the week was over, I felt like we were family. I can not say enough about this awesome family and the Lucero surf retreat!
You will NOT be disappointed if you book a stay with them.
Pura Vida! 🤙❤️

I’ve been here less than 24 hours and I don’t want to leave. I came with my daughter for her spring break to give surfing a shot. Jared got me riding waves during the first sesh. My goal was to ride one wave during the week. Mission accomplished. Can’t wait to see what happens the rest of the week

The accommodations are fantastic. Very clean with a beautiful garden surrounding a pool. The beds are super comfortable. Breakfast together with the other guests is fantastic. Some of the guests are long time surfers so it’s great hearing about their morning session over a delicious brecky.

The town of Santa Teresa is amazing. You feel like it’s completely unspoiled. I generally stumble onto these places after they’ve become a cliche. The vibe here is that of a totally relaxed beach community focused on that which is important. Living life to its fullest. You should go. 100%.

We came to the hotel at noon only to find out that Marieke forgot that we are arriving that day. Even though I made it clear about my arrival date and time again and again.

The room was not ready, naturally. When we can finally come in, we also had to make the room beautifully available, because she is showing the hotel to a potential buyer.

The electricity goes out sometimes, for small period of time.

There is no yoga studio here, Yoga is outsourced somewhere else.

The wifi in the room is terrible, only enough for google map. Even though we are closest to the only wifi router in the hotel.

There is no one at the concierge because there’s no additional staff besides Marieke. And she is not there.

We helped our neighbor caught a giant tarantulas in his room. We believe the tarantulas came through the bathroom window which was not sealed.

She rarely checked my WhatsApp messages. If I ask for services, she will say that she is busy with 3 children. I mean what do you say to that? I’m sorry for making you being a bad mother by asking for helping with the Tarantulas?

This is a $420 dollar a night hotel we are staying. We moved out after one night because there are so many options in town, with much more reasonable pricing, good wifi, happy people who are there for you, and actual services.

Lucero was an amazing surf retreat with very hospitable owners. The surf lessons improved both mine and my friends skills drastically in just 4 lessons! Jared and Jose were awesome instructors and very down to earth.
There was a home made breakfast every morning that tasted delicious and our room was cleaned every day. The cleanliness of the overall resort was exceptional and the location was in the perfect spot. It was located within walking distance of many restaurants and stores.
Additionally…it was a very reasonable price for the resort, breakfast, lessons, and overall experience.
Thank you for the wonderful experience and we will definitely be back!

Where do I begin? My heart is absolutely full after hosting a retreat at Lucero. If you are looking for a home to call your own in Santa Teresa, look no further. This place is perfectly tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the busy street of Santa Teresa and allows for you to get all the peace and quiet your soul requires. The rooms are amazing, private with full ac, a beautiful bathroom and a patio to yourself to read, meditate, or listen to the variety of birds singing. For when you are not wanting to go to the beach for a dip, the beautiful pool surrounded by palms (which is where I spent majority of my time) left me feeling absolutely inspired, relaxed, and in love with life as it gave me the space to cool down and to connect with the other fellow kindred souls staying at Lucero. The staff is so helpful, loving, kind and will do anything to help you during your Costa Rican stay which is worth its weight in gold. From food recommendations to transportation, you can trust they will get you where you need to go. OH! In case that is not enough, the breakfast included is so delicious and abundant, it is the reason I wake up feeling excited to start the day every morning! Lucero truly is a complete package and was the very reason my retreat turned out to be a dream come. Thank you friends for creating this space for dreams to be reality. My heart is so full. I can’t wait to come back.

I’m not sure I can say anything that hasn’t already been said in over 100 other 5 star reviews, but we enjoyed ourselves so much at Lucero that I want to leave a review.
First, breakfast time was our favorite. We woke up each morning with the sun and headed right down for poolside breakfast with new friends. Small enough that it’s intimate and you can get to know other guests if you want to during this time. We met some really fun people and enjoyed their company at breakfast for the week. Not to mention the spread! Every morning you have fluffy eggs, beans, rice, and plenty of bread and fruits to pick from! Juices, coffee, yogurt, & granola, too! Perfect start to the day. We felt so spoiled.
Marieke, Jared, and their girls were so patient and good with our 1.5 year old. We could actually enjoy ourselves, relax, and feel welcome here even with our toddler! I think that’s very unique and hard to find a *truly* family friendly place to stay that still feels really luxurious.
We stayed in the apartment and it was perfect. We really felt it was luxurious but we are simple people. It’s earthy and minimally decorated with a jungle view and a hammock on the porch. The whole thing blends in with the nature surrounding it.
Lastly, if you’re going to surf this is the place to secure lessons no matter if you’re a beginner or more advanced surfer. My husband had never surfed before and after 4 lessons with Jared he felt really good. I had 3 lessons and am not a good swimmer, but still was starting to get a feel for it after only 3 days.
I should also mention Santa Teresa is such an awesome little town. Very local, not all tourists. You’ll start to recognize the same faces after only a week. Take advantage of the fruits here and have a smoothie every day!
We hope we run into Jared and Marieke and their kiddos again sometime in this life!

First time visiting Costa Rica. I didn’t know what to expect, but little did I know that Lucero would provide an incredible experience by every account! This is more than a hotel, it’s a family run retreat that immerses you in the best Costa Rica has to offer. Marieke and Jared’s hospitality should be the gold standard!
My focus was to learn to surf, and everything about Lucero facilitated that. The property itself is both beautiful and serene. Being here, far enough from the noise and dust of the main street, is relaxing and surrounds you with wildlife (monkeys, iguanas, the jungle). After a surf session, this is the perfect place to relax by the pool or in my hammock. The pictured don’t do it justice—the property is beautiful. As for the surf sessions, Jared is an amazing coach. He calibrates his instruction based on your proficiency level and ensures you have a fun time (never surfed before but I was consistently riding unbroken waves in a few days!). I didn’t want to worry about cooking so I could focus on surfing, and Lucero did not disappoint. The breakfast was a blend of familiar (American) fare and Costa Rican staples. Catered lunch was no different.
Marieke and Jared are incredible hosts who go out of their way to make sure you have an enjoyable and stress free stay. They are chalk full of suggestions and recommendations in and around Santa Teresa, and ready to help with anything (when I needed a ride into town to get a COVID test, they immediately offered to take me). By the end of the week, they felt more like friends than hosts.
The experiences I had and everything included in the package make this an amazing deal! Can’t wait to come back!

Santa Teresa is amazing. Exactly the kind of place I love to visit with the beach, surf and lifestyle. Beautiful!

I think the location of Lucero was good only a short 10 min walk to the beach. Ample choice of surf boards to use. Surf instruction was ok to good. Maybe being an intermediate surfer ( although having not surfed for several years ) could have affected my opinion. Issac was a standout instructor and I really enjoyed a one on one lesson plus a lesson with one other guest with him. I guess I was disappointed we only surfed at the same beach which was the closest one within walking distance. I had read that other guests had gone to other surf spots but the week we were there this did not happen. Probably the biggest disappointment for me.

Gala was very good and organized. She helped with all our enquiries and was prompt with organizing tours, transport etc. The owner Marieke was also responsive while we were at Lucero as we had issues with Wi-Fi. A good thing because my son spent less time on his iPad the first few days.

The other guest that were in our surf group were lovely. We all got on well and had dinner, did some other activities together. It’s always nice to meet like minded people with regards to traveling, surfing etc.

If you wanna improve your surfing or just wanna have a great hideout a short walk from many surf breaks, then Lucero is where you wanna stay! We absolutely loved our stay here. The rooms are beautifully decorated, the vibe around the house is super relaxed and the breakfast is just what you need after a long morning surf session. Jared and Marieke are super nice and welcoming as well. We only spend a few nights here, but would love to return and stay for at least a week to literally eat, sleep, surf, repeat.

I went to Otro Lado Lodge, it was amazing! But I stayed in a regular room, not in bungalows. It was a twin bed, really comfortable.
