Marieke and Jared provide the most amazing vacation opportunity for families. I first went to Lucero with my 4 year old son in 2014. Returned in 2016 with my son and his mother. The second trip ess more magical than the first. Jared provides great surf instruction for all skills. He would take my wife and son to beginner spots in the day, and wake up at 5am for one on one’s with me at some other locations. Marieke makes sure every part of your journey is taken care of. If you are a newer traveler , she’s got you. If you are a globe trekker, she’ll have stories to share. The location is exquisite. Remote yet functional. I dont go in peak season. Their children Riley, Luka and Jai just round out the experience. If you are thinking Costa Rica, Go Lucero!

Thanks Marieke and Jared for an amazing family adventure! We were looking for an option to introduce us to both Costa Rica and surfing for a couple families in March. Lucero Surf Retreat turned out to be the perfect solution. Both Marieke and Jared as well as their team are fantastic hosts. Great communication prior to the trip and they made it very convenient for our us to get the most out of a one week surf retreat. The overall vibe of the place is very laid back and welcoming. Top quality lodging and freshly prepared meals. The daily surf experience was so much fun - we all looked forward to each session. Jared shared great stories and has a natural ability to teach surfers of all ability levels. Because of our large group we were a bit concerned that we wouldn't receive the level of instruction needed to advance our skills and enjoy our sessions in the water. But the exact opposite happened. Jared brought along his team of instructors, Armondo, James and Estoban. Each of them fantastic instructors and super cool. The sessions were so much fun they had to pull us out of the water every day and we booked extra sessions. It seemed like Armondo was the Mayor of Playa Hermosa beach. We could not have been more comfortable surfing as a family. These guys have passion for Costa Rica and surfing and it left a big impression on all of us. There is no doubt we will return.

Before this trip, I had never traveled to Costa Rica. Marieka was extremely helpful and patient with me while planning transportation and answering all of my questions before arrival. The location is within walking distance of two beach walkways/entrances, a plethora of restaurant options, cute shops, extra activities, and a grocery store. If you don’t feel like going anywhere, you’ll be completely happy with your room, hammock, pool, and abundant greenery around Lucero. Everyday we were served breakfast and lunch with the freshest fruits and yummy local cuisine. We were given options to join other activities like yoga, snorkeling, massage, or zip line tour on top of our surf lessons. If there’s something you want to do, Marieka can get it set up for you. Jared and his surf instructors were not only experienced professionals, but exude passion for the sport and the water. I personally worked with Jared, Armondo and Juan, each instructor not only made surfing possible, but safe and FUN! By the time the week was over, I felt like we were family. I can not say enough about this awesome family and the Lucero surf retreat! You will NOT be disappointed if you book a stay with them. Pura Vida! 🤙❤️

Starting off with communication with the hosts, Jared and Marieke. They are accessible, professional, responsive, and intuitive. They were open, warm and welcoming into their family/B and B. They live on the top floor with their three young kids and two dogs. First the B and B is a relatively small hotel/BB, tastefully well furnished. The rooms have AC and high quality linens/comforters as well as maid service daily. The food was fabulous, mostly vegetarian, although with a few meat options and always delicious and healthy. (Marieke will ask about your dietary preferences upon booking). Lucero provides breakfast and lunch, with dinner on your own in town. Surfing: Lucero/Santa Teresa is lucky to have several breaks of differing abilities nearby. Jared is the surf coach/teacher, and he offers a safe, fun way to learn to surf or to surf better!! The camp is suitable for beginners (adults/kids) through intermediate/advanced surfers. I surf most weekends at home (California), and my goal was to get more comfortable on a shorter board. Jared, listened, watched me surf, and was intuitive in helping me improve. It felt more like I was surfing with good friends (friends who surf a LOT better than my usual surf buddies do!) Just a great experience! One highlight of the trip was a quad trip to the waterfalls at Montezuma! It was an adventure and great to see wildlife (howler monkeys, etc) in their natural environment!! Over-all I really can't say enough about the experience!!

We stayed at Lucero for our December holiday break for about 14 days. The place was really nice and the hosts were great. Very sweet family that own it. The surf lessons were awesome. We were first timers. We travelled with a 4 year old and a 11 year old. Our 11 year old took to it right away, he was bummed he didn’t make it to their Instagram posts. The 4 year old learned how to swim. It was a great introduction to Santa Teresa and Playa Hermosa. Playa Hermosa is amazing and is where you get taken to surf. We really enjoyed that area and spent a lot of time in Hermosa. Lucero is great for families looking for a surf focused vacation that welcomes kids. I recommend it!
