The Location This is only 25 minutes away from the Liberia airport and we spent a few days here before flying out after a trip up the coast hitting beach towns. The hotel is right on the Gulf of Papagayo and has a very posh lake feel (vs. beach). Super calm waters, beautiful view. We were also able to drive to Rincon for an excursion and that was about 45 minutes. The Experience Valet parking is complimentary and the valets really helped us when our rental car battery died. They noticed we were in a rush and really stepped up to get it jumped and moving. Check in is open air desk and they sanitize the room keys in front of you. Your room has also been sanitized - we needed a new set of room keys the first entry point and the man who brought them refused to even get near the entrance to keep it sanitized for us. There is a very long pool, chairs, umbrellas and little cabanas for rent right along side the two restaurants (more on that below). The pool has sunscreen, aloe and poolside service with towels. This is a great place for families but NOT for adult looking for quiet (there were plenty of those too but the kids really changed the feel from luxe relaxation to block party). The staff were all above and beyond kind, and accommodating. WORD OF CAUTION: I decided to spend the day under the umbrella at the pool in lieu of sunscreening (I have pale skin) and I still burned terribly. It was likely the water reflection so PUT SUNSCREEN ON NO MATTER WHAT). There is aloe for sale at the gift shop but it's in a huge 16 oz bottle so try to snag the free stuff at the pool if you make a mistake like I did and can't travel with a huge bottle. The Room We loved how these rooms were styled. We got the Bark room, bottom tier. It has a separate screened in sitting room with a hammock and rocking chair, fan, etc. and then a glass door leading into your main room, bathroom. There is a walk-in closet, robes, ironing board, toiletries, alarm clock with blue tooth connection, TV etc. and some great blackout curtains around the entire room. We also found the bedding to be very comfortable. The floors are beautiful brushed concrete but not cold. The central air worked VERY well. There is a handless telephone, as well, to make calls to the front for your car, reservations, etc. Dining There are two restaurants on site. If you eat a vegan, vegetarian, plant-based or flexitarian style of eating, SCROLL DOWN on the QR menu that pops up and choose the Vegetarian Menu - it is excellent! The veggie burger, quinoa salad, and vegetarian pizza (made without cheese for me) are excellent. Breakfast is $25 for a VARIED continental. You can order things for cheaper but we found we were so hungry that we just said YEP when we got there. TIP: add the continental breakfast to your bill when booking the room. It's $5 cheaper than in person. TIP: if you are a SUPER early bed-time person, ask if there is a wedding (great place to host). There was one while we were there and we listened to the DJ easily - although it was turned off by 10 PM and was great music.

We had an unexpected stay at this hotel. We used Bonvoy points and booked the hotel the same day. We were greeted by the reception staff an hour after we booked our room and we were supposedly upgraded. Our room was big enough for our family of 4. We enjoyed the pool and the small beach. We enjoyed the various restaurants from a snack at the pool to dinner at night and lastly followed by breakfast the next morning. The beds were very comfortable. My husband and I borrowed the bikes and went for a bike ride along the path near the beach in the forest. Our family had such a short and sweet stay that we were disappointed we had to leave.

This was our last and longest stop on a two-week trip to Costa Rica. We'd requested a hotel in an area that's not too touristy. Our wish was granted. They front desk personnel was incredibly helpful and welcoming. Our room was on the ground floor, towards the back of the garden. Very much to our liking, comfortable big beds and enough room for our suitcases. The cleaning ladies are lovely too. We had no tours and trips booked in advance and the hotel-own service was very much to our satisfaction. We were well advised on our possibilities and they were even so kind to change and shorten a day long tour to a half-day tour to accommodate to our preferences. The hostess and waiters at the restaurants were all most helpful and open. We enjoyed the food very much as well. Over all a very pleasant stay.

El Mangroove has lost its groove. This hotel is not a luxury hotel and should aptly be rebranded as a 1-2 star hotel to avoid misleading potential guests. Check-In Check-in was an uncomfortable experience for me. I cannot recall a time when I was required to allow a hold that matched the daily rate and I travel quite a bit. Could've been that it's common in Costa Rica, but I wasn't sure so I protested a bit and had the amount reduced by $500. The Rooms The room was the most disappointing part of the stay at El Mangroove and was the first indication that this hotel was not a luxury hotel. Upon entering room 204 the moldy, musty smell almost knocked me on my back and I spent most of the night trying to find where it was coming from to try and eliminate it. Further inspection of the room revealed stained, moist bedding, a rust-stained toilet bowl, a stained and grungy-looking basin, a floor mat stuck to the concrete surface by a sticky substance beneath it, rusty hinges on the shower door, a grungy-looking shower drain cover, and to top it off, empty erectile disfunction pill packaging in one of the nightstand drawers. Clearly, room 204 was not properly cleaned prior to our arrival and I requested to be moved to another. Fortunately, room 104 didn't have that awful smell I encountered in room 204, but there were some identical shortcomings. Specifically, moist bedding, the rust-stained toilet bowl, a dirty, grungy basin, and the dirty, grungy shower drain cover. Additionally, I discovered that the entrance door to 104 didn't quite reach the floor, granting free passage into the living area of all the willing Costa Rican night crawlers. I ended up sharing the room with at least 2 geckos that were well fed by the insects that also made their way into 104. Amenities - The Gym & Cruiser Bicycles The condition of the machines in the gym revealed just how poorly managed this hotel is. The Treadmill that I visited the gym to use had a hole in the motor housing exposing the cylindrical roller that moves the belt, rust on parts of the metal surfaces, and a worn and mostly inoperable display. The Treadmill squeaked loudly when I figured out how to get it going but warmed up and quieted down after a few minutes, allowing me to complete my runs during my stay. The other machines also had very clear signs of wear and neglect. Later in the week I decided to use the available cruiser bicycles to ride to the next town over and visit the grocery store. Once again it became evident that management was doing a terrible job of maintaining the property's equipment. The chain on every bike was rusty and dirty, and the rubber handles were dirty and gross. Still, I decided to say a little prayer and head out on the road. Fortunately, there were no hardware failures on the road and I made it to my destination and back safely. The People and The Food The people and the food were the only good aspects of my 7 day stay. The staff was genuinely friendly and engaging and even recommended things to do off the property. They were willing to help with whatever they could and seemed to enjoy doing so. The food was also very good, though the menu never changed while we were there. I believe that the menu is fixed and that it has allowed the chef to consistently churn out flavorful dishes. Conclusion El Mangroove is a poorly managed property that has lost its groove and has no place being categorized as a luxury hotel. The dingy smells, dirty rooms, moist, stained bedding, neglected equipment, and the abundance of bugs and creatures that share the room with you, makes EL MANGROVE a more apt name for this 1-2 star property.

Stayed 2 nights at this hotel! Quiet and chill and right on the waters of Papagayo. Fantastic suite we had with a private balcony with chair swing. Great customer service from Jesús at check-in! We had 2 fabulous dinners at the outside restaurant overlooking the pool. Creative cocktail menu. Activities we did were stand-up paddle boarding, yoga, and a coffee tasting. Only thing lacking was the fitness center...it did the trick for basic exercising but it’s small. Would def return. Perfect for a brief couples stay but good for families too...there were small kids in the pool but it wasn’t distracting.
