Nestled in a breathtaking natural setting, Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo is lauded for its luxurious, spacious rooms with awe-inspiring views and a plethora of amenities, including pristine pools, beaches, and a sumptuous spa. While some guests have expressed concerns over room maintenance and noise, the resort's cleanliness and the staff's top-notch service frequently earn high marks.
However, the remote location may pose a challenge for exploring local attractions, and opinions on value for money are mixed, given the prices for food and activities.

Detailed Reviews
Costa Rica is a special place. Peninsula Papagayo and the Andaz take it to the next level. The grounds are gorgeous and you are surrounded by nature and wildlife. Listening to the Howlers is amazing.
Completely relaxing resort with all the amenities you need. Several pool and beach options including an adult pool and beach house with great beverage and food service as well as water sport activities.
Rooms compliment nature. Glass water bottles refilled daily in room to minimize any use of plastic. Beautiful large open air optional shower. Nice comfy robes. Complimentary flip flops and hats. My only slight negative is the bed could be a little more plush with an extra pillow or two and a blanket layer and a little more luxurious feel.
Several great food options on site and shuttle available to other dining options on the peninsula.
Lots of excursions available both on and off the Peninsula. Good hiking on the Peninsula.
Staff makes you feel welcome and want to come back especially Michael, Diego, Freddy, Johnny and Jackson.
I am looking forward to my next visit already!

My husband and I stayed at Andaz for the first half of our honeymoon and we could not have been more satisfied with our stay. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly, some of the best staff at a hotel we have ever had. Everyone was COVID conscious which made us feel even more comfortable (masked worn at all times even in the 95 degree heat). They had hand sanitizers everywhere and people cleaning down everything as soon as a guest would get up.
The grounds are stunning and the hotel itself was very welcoming, clean, and beautiful. We had a bay view room, we loved waking up to the ocean.
Food and drinks: We opted for the all inclusive package which we found was a very reasonable price for two adults wanting to have some cocktails (which were delicious) throughout the day and eat whatever and whenever we wanted. The food was fresh and very good, our favorite was the ceviche at Rio Bhongo. The beach house had a great menu for food and drinks which was nice to have when we took the short ride via boat. Ostra had great tapas as well. All restaurants on the property and the boat house are included in the all inclusive. This was nice as we didn't need to take our wallets with us anywhere unless we left the resort.
Excursions: Since we were staying 6 nights at the resort (2 weeks total in Costa Rica) we decided to visit Monteverde, the cloud forrest, we did the hanging bridges tour which included a visit to the humming bird sanctuary as well as zip lining and lunch. This was a great experience and would highly recommend if you are staying for more than a few days as its a full day excursion (left at 7am and got back by 6pm). We also did the Canyon adventure park which is a half day adventure that includes a delicious lunch, zip lining, rafting, canyoning, and rock climbing for those who like adventure we would highly recommend.
Although Andaz is not an adults only resort, we enjoyed the adults only pool and hardly ran into families during our stay so we found it to still be romantic.
We are already planning our trip back to Costa Rica so we can stay at this lovely resort again. This is in the top 3 resorts we have ever stayed at in our lives, highly recommend!

We just returned from a glorious week at the Andaz Papagayo. From the moment we arrived until we departed, everything was excellent. The service was top notch from housekeeping to the restaurants. Randy Vargas in the Rio Bhongo restaurant was a gracious host, who made sure everything was perfect with our stay. He checked in every morning over breakfast to see that all was OK. Our coffee maker the first morning wasn't working (or we couldn't figure it out) and he made sure a new one was brought up. Everywhere we went, the staff always knew who we were, and were extremely warm and friendly. The boat launch to the Beach House was great. While the beaches at the hotel aren't the greatest, the beach at the Beach House was sublime. Honestly, it's much cooler at the beach. Great food. The ocean water was the perfect temperature. The fine volcanic sand was gentle on the feet and the water crystal clear, which is good so you can the the many fish swimming around with you. Our suite was huge, with so much to see from the covered deck and the walls of glass. The monkeys put on a show one late afternoon. The food in the other restaurants was excellent. Be sure to explore the entire complex, very cool. Take a walk to the marina for lunch (or the shuttle for dinner.) The Dive Bar was cool. Not the greatest food by far, but it hit the spot and the setting was cool. The infinity pools at the Andaz were really nice, although it does seem to be especially hot when there is no breeze. Go, enjoy. It is another excellent Andaz property.

We arrived at the Andaz for the final two nights of our stay in Costa Rica. From the moment we drove through the private gate and through the grounds toward the hotel, we knew we were going to have the best experience of our trip. The views of the bay are stunning, the grounds are gorgeous, and the service from the moment we stepped out of our rental car was exceptional. We wish we would have spent more of our trip at the Andaz, but now we know for next time. We were greeted at check-in with two cold glass bottles of water while the bellhops sanitized our luggage and loaded up the carts to take us to our room. Rooms are modern and chic with a beautiful and private lanai. We could have sat out here all day. The added touches in the room like the hats/flipflops/free bevvies/free snacks made us feel really taken care of. The front desk staff was attentive and friendly any time we had questions. Their covid protocols are in place and respected by all. We spent time at the beach house, getting there by shuttle van one day and by the shuttle boat the next day. We were greeted by name at the beach house and welcomed with a fresh juice. We took advantage of the stand up paddle boards and also rented a jetski and booked a private boat with a third party which we highly recommend. Breakfast has everything you can think of and more with 5 star staff. We have stayed in many 5 star hotels and this is right up there with the best service ever.
Took the shuttle to Four Seasons for our last night (takes 15 mins) and was unimpressed with Pesce, the italian restaurant. Better off just staying on the Andaz property and enjoying all it has to offer. Thanks to all the staff and groundpeople for a memorable stay.

Our first experience with Andaz was back in 2016. My now husband and I went there on our first vacation together. We fell in love with the people, the food, and of course the view. Once we got engaged we knew we wanted it to be somewhere warm and somewhere that was special to us. Once we decided we never looked back. We got married in January 2021. We had the pleasure of working with Marlena, Isella, and Margoth. Marlena we had the pleasure of working with first. Her quick response times and helpfulness was amazing. She helped us with pricing and answered any questions we had. She truly was so helpful and genuinely cared about what we wanted out of our wedding. Next we met Isella! Truly a god's gift. She helped with every part of our wedding! After she left we even stayed in contact and she continued to help. Lastly, but not least, was Margoth. We had spoken over email but met her once we arrived. She made sure that she was there once we got to the hotel. Anything we needed while we were there she handled. She delivered all of our welcome gifts, coordinated all of our guest bags and items to their rooms. She not only took care of us but our guests as well. She was always calling to check on things and we felt so blessed to have her there for everything. On our wedding day she coordinated with Isella on EVERYTHING! She was a part of our wedding day every step of the way. Sadly, once we were leaving she was there too. Making sure we had a great time, we had all of our items and wishing us the best life together. She even had my favorite hot sauce in a container so I could take home! It’s about the little things! With COVID, Andaz made sure to put their guests' health above all else. The rooms, dining, pool areas, and lobby were always spotless and constantly being sanitized. We had the first wedding back! When interacting with the staff, you could feel their excitement! Everyone knew who not only we were but also our guest. They took the time to know our names and our guest names. It was a sense of home. We fell in love with Andaz once before, but having our wedding there, we knew we would be back multiple times throughout our life together.

+1
We arrived to the hotel after a long drive and appreciated the welcome drink.
The rooms are new, with sweeping bay views and luxuriously appointed with furnishing and all the conveniences you might need.
A shower that opens to the ocean terrace and gives an energising start to the day is a nice touch.
Breakfast buffet food was excellent with a juice bar and many pastries. The resident monkeys do enjoy prowling for any leftovers so watch your plate!
The pools aren’t huge but easy to relax here and enjoy the forest ambiance. A walk down to the beach or a buggy ride to the water sports area leads to a fairly muddy seawater so swimming not recommended. But kayaking and jet skis are great fun.
We played golf on the peninsula course and it is first class, with epic views and stunning holes that I’m definitely going to remember as one of the best in Costa Rica.
Dinner was very nice, with easy service and food was appetising, if the portions are a bit small.
Pricing is 5* and you do get well looked after here, but some areas could be improved with better management. Check in/out is too slow and sometimes long waits for a buggy pickup.
We didn’t have chance to use the spa or other activities but I think there is plenty to do here.
We loved the Property and wildlife around us from monkeys to iguanas and many birds.
Overall a wonderful experience and I will be back with my family to enjoy Andaz again.

First for all looking to visit in 2022 and the beginning of 2023, there is major construction at the resort that is in close proximity to three of the seven buildings with rooms. We could hear the construction starting early in the morning. The hotel did not disclose the construction to us prior to the stay.
Overall, the property is in a beautiful location but doesn’t offer the service or accommodations expected given the resorts five star rating. This resort does not compare to the Four Seasons or Nayara, which we visited as well during our stay in Costa Rica. At best, this resort should be rated three stars.
To start, the rooms are mediocre - they’re small with utilitarian (in my opinion, tasteless) fixtures and decor. If traveling with a partner, bear in mind that you will not have much privacy in the bathroom if that’s a problem for you. I’ll leave it at that. The rain shower and tv didn’t work in my room. We were able to get by but a little disappointing. On a positive note, the views are generally quite good of the bay.
Service was very poor, particularly when grading on a curve against other similarly rated resorts. We had numerous requests that were simply ignored by the staff. Room cleaning was inconsistent - we needed to ask for our room to be cleaned a few times through our stay because the cleaning staff seemed to have overlooked us a number of times.
Dining was certainly a positive. While you won’t be amazed if you live in a city with good food, I thought the food was decent and compared well against other resorts I’ve visited. Their wine bar with craft cocktails was a highlight of the dining experience.
Location is beautiful. But the resort is on an isolated peninsula that caters exclusively to tourists and is secured by numerous gated entries with personnel granting entry to guests. I mention this to suggest that you probably shouldn’t visit if you’re looking to experience Costa Rican culture. There are also few activities offered at the resort, so you’ll want to be someone who enjoys time by the pool.
To sum it all up, this is a decent resort in a beautiful location. But it doesn’t live up to its marketing. Its staff are generally friendly and competent. But management, systems, and processes could use an overhaul.

Pros: efficient friendly staff and service
Spacious beautiful rooms
Breakfast, lunch
Cons: this is not a beach resort, it is a wooded hillside hotel with beautiful pools, the beach is a 15 minute shuttle ride away. Be prepared for a lot of steps or waiting for a golf cart to take you from your room to the restaurant. Only one restaurant is open currently and although it has a large menu, the atmosphere leaves a lot to desire in the evening. We took the shuttle, 20 minutes, to the Four Seasons for dinner every other night which had three different options— luxury Italian, open air steakhouse, and poolside casual. All had excellent food and service although significantly more expensive than the Andaz. At the Italian place, dinner with a nice bottle of wine was $700 for two. At the Andaz, a steak dinner with a nice bottle of wine was $200.
The beach directly below the Andaz reminds me of a Mississippi River beach— dark mucky sand , not attractive. Also, at this time of year, all the trees look dead, not a lush tropical environment in March.
In addition, because of the location in a gated peninsula, it is a long travel distance to go to any typical Costa Rica activities. We had a 1 1/2 hour ride to go river tubing and a hike to a waterfall. The tubing itself was a blast, worth the drive. You have to book through a local hotel, Guachipichi, and they arranged a private pickup at the Andaz. Total of $385 for two including transfers and a nice lunch. The beach towns near Tamarindo are two hours away. So, if you want to lay around a nice pool and have great service, you’ll be happy at the Andaz. The Four Seasons offers a decent beach and better food but you’ll pay through the nose. I enjoyed my previous trip to Costa Rica more being farther south at a nice tropical beach hotel, Florblanca, combined with a few nights at La Paz waterfall park staying at the Peace Lodge.
The Papagayo peninsula is probably best if you want to golf and lay around a pool. It is not the place for zip lining, waterfalls, rafting, or the beach. We got pretty bored after a few days and were there for a week which was too much.
Hola Don Y, Many thanks for not only making our resort your vacation destination but for also sharing your feedback with future travelers. I was delighted to read that overall you enjoyed our resort but do recognize that you perhaps were looking for a location closer to the mountains. I cannot even put into words the beauty of this hotel, the entire property, the breathtaking views, and the kindness of this staff. We have been all over the world, and this hotel and this location is now one of our favorite trips. The staff is wonderful - there's housekeeping daily, free snacks & non alcoholic drinks stocked in your room daily, etc. There was never an issue finding a pool chair, and sunscreen/bug spray is provided. The family pools are great, and we were able to visit the tranquil adults only pool while our children were at the kids club.
My kids LOVED the kids club. Ages 4 and up go for free, but our 2 1/2 year old needed a babysitter at $20 an hour, which we thought was very worth it. Our kids loved the activities and wanted to go there every single day. I did appreciate that kids 4 and under eat free!
We thought the food was very good, a bit expensive considering sushi was $20 and/or most entrees were around $30 for dinner, but cocktails were reasonably priced at $12 each.
I cannot rave enough about the Andaz Beach House. The boat comes every 25 min or so and will take you to/from the beach house. The food and drinks there are great. Tons of shady areas for kids to play football, soccer, jenga, shovels and sand toys provided, free kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling, etc
The free shuttle to eat around the peninsula (four seasons included) was so nice!
The resort is hilly but you can use the WhatsApp to text for a golf cart at any minute. I don't think I ever waited longer than 1 minute for a response from the app, and more than 2 min for a golf cart.
Traveling with kids is so stressful, and the Andaz truly made it SO easy. Both of our kids cried when it was time to go home. We cannot wait to go back!!
Thank you SO much to Lau, Jordan, Lilly, Ronnie, and Dianna at the kids club. We adore you. Thank you Eric with housekeeping who always made sure we had what we needed. Thank you Sebastian (peninsula explorers) for playing soccer with my son at the beach house and helping me stand up paddle.Thank you Bridgette at Chao Pascao for making such great food suggestions. Thank you Audriana at Rho Bongo for always helping us during breakfast. And lastly Steven who busted his butt for us taking us around on the golf carts, helping us with our luggage, always helping my kids, etc. Steven is a superstar.
I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone!

Traveled extensively for 30+ years and could literally go anywhere for a cold weather respite from Minnesota — for 4th year in a row my wife and I have eagerly chose to to go to Andaz Papagayo. The combination of the beautiful setting, perfect weather, and always friendly attentive staff never disappoint.
Spouse had second knee replacement surgery in two years about three months ago. Normally when visiting, we looked forward to getting our steps in...on hills and steps. This year a simple Whatsup text to the number provided ensured a golf cart was available to take us up and down the hill to restaurants, pools, and room. Always with a welcoming “pura vida” attitude.
New this time - Rio Bhongo restaurant and Adult pool menus upgraded with more choices. Prices a bit higher, but par for high end resorts.
We always like to dine off a resort a few times each stay. The stand outs this time: #1 Hacienda Blu (newly opened at Panama Beach) and #2 Ginger (upped its game significantly since last year when we thought it was average).
Adult pool staff the best...Manuel, Josue, Freddie! Randall at Bhongo as well.
Looking forward to making it five years in a row in 2021!

I visited in August in the middle of the "rainy" season. It was sunny most of the time, but when it rained, oh my goodness did the heavens open up (see photo in my writeup). The folks said they really hadn't had any rain up to that point but when Ma Nature is involved YMMV. Have a great trip.
Not that I’ve ever seen
I’d rather walk around Costa Rica at night than glasgow!
It’s very safe.
Media at its best!
We had two queens that were truly queens that we were able to have 2 people in each.
