The resort is located on the bay (not oceanfront) so the water was quite still. The sand is beige mixed with black volcano sand. Our rooms were little duplex bungalows built into the hillside. It was difficult to get to the beach from the spa area where our room was because there is a muddy section you have to walk through to get to the compacted sand. To get to the main area of the resort where the restaurants and main pool area you can walk the beach for about 2 minutes if you can get through the muddy area to get to the beach. Transportation can be called to take you wherever you want to go. The food overall was super good with only a few dishes that I did not care for (pizza and black soup). Our room was like having your own little house in the hills and the views were pretty good. What makes this place fabulous is the staff. Everyone was so friendly and helpful and genuinely happy to be there. I met a tour guide on the beach named Herson Segura (Spanglish Tours) and he took us on a full day experience that was the highlight of our trip.

We own a business and like everyone have been stressed beyond belief. Needless to say, were really looking forward to this trip. I also want to point out that the country is absolutely beautiful this time of year and everyone we met at the resort were mostly wonderful. However, from the time we arrived, nobody at this resort is on the same page. I'm not sure if its from being shut down and having to ramp back up or what but it was extremely frustrating. They pulled our luggage off the van and explained that they were going to sanitize them while we went to "orientation" and told us to go to the other side of the front cabana and wait. We went there and someone said no go over there. we did this 4 or 5 times until I said were going to get a drink. The so called orientation turned into a 3-4 day ordeal trying to sell us a $25,000-$120,000 vacation package with their resorts. I said not today, were ready to relax. They then took us to our room and put us in the wrong one. When I booked I made sure and called to make sure i was getting the room with the private pool overlooking the water that is on their website. NOPE, bait and switch! They put us in a room with a tiny pool with no view but someone's roof right in front of us nowhere near the water. I had to be rude to get them to move us. They somehow found a room with an ocean view just a short distance from us with a nicer pool but was still not the room I paid for. We took it so I wouldn't ruin my wifes time by griping at them. That night we ended up at the seaside grill since we now wouldn't have time to get ready for one of the more formal restaurants. The food wasn't the greatest for us and ended up going to our rooms frustrated and hungry after out evening. That night the AC leaked all in the floor as well. The 1st morning we got up to put our valuables in our safe and it wouldnt work. I called the front desk to see if someone could walk me through it and it turned into a huge deal again! They ended up bringing a new safe and installing? So, we just carried everything with us in a bag all day. From there we went to meet with them, during breakfast, and listen to the sales pitch on the vacation package. I got very frustrated again because they wouldn't let us eat breakfast until we listened to the sales pitch. I finally told them to get us some food or were leaving. They brought in a lady named Caroline that was very nice and engaging, to seal the deal. They threw in free spas, dinner, and came way down on the price of the package. After 3 hours we had enough and said we would have to think about it just to get out of the deal. They needed an immediate answer and we explained that that's not happening. That day we were asked 3 or 4 times if we were buying it by other employees. Turns out they all make a commission on the sale. That night we decided to go to the Hibachi grill. I had on a nice collared button up and pressed dress shorts and the wife in a beautiful dress. We weren't allowed in the building because I had shorts on. I explained that during orientation they told us collared shirts were the only dress code. They refused and said go to the Italian they will let you. We went there and weren't allowed in either. So, they sat us out on the patio and we made the best of it. While we were eating i witnessed at least 3 couples walk in with the women wearing sports bras with their ass cheeks hanging out of their shorts go in, but I have to wear long pants??? We get back to the room and the AC was still leaking after they said they fixed it and they didn't bring any towels or restock the beer or water in the fridge. The next day we went to breakfast and were supposed to get with Caroline with an answer on buying the vacation package. We told them we would be inside the restaurant eating. Nobody showed up and we actually had a nice quiet breakfast. We sat in the chairs by the pool that day and met some of the other people staying. Within 2 hours I had met 3 couples that were put in a room different than what they booked and was told about the same packages that we were being told were $40,000 were sold to them for $5000-25,000. We ended up having a great day lounging by the pool and enjoyed the wide variety of drinks available. This was our anniversary day and I had planned ahead a private dinner on the ocean for just my wife and I. When we got to the restaurants , there was no ocean front dinner but a swimming pool front dinner. Again, I was frustrated. The manager of the restaurants, Louis, came out at this time. They ended up putting us in a small gazebo overlooking the pool and ended up being very nice. Louis made sure everything was perfect for us for dinner from that point on until we left. We got to the room that night, yep, air conditioner still leaking all over the floor. The next day we had an all day fishing trip booked with Sea Star, which was an offsite charter company. This was one of the best days we had, off of the resort! That night enjoyed Italian and Louis made sure it was fantastic for us. We went down for breakfast the next morning and lounged by the pool afterwards. I had several people coming to me asking if I was going to buy the package again. We finally went to Caroline and said no thanks, not right now, there's just too much negative and going wrong at the resort and that we came to relax not get harassed about spending $40,000. We went to the spa later and i will say that the spa is absolutely amazing, was the highlight of the resort. we ended up going back the next day and doing the outside spa treatment and was very relaxing and very needed after all the frustrations. The day of checkout we went down for breakfast and were asked 2 more times if we could think about buying into the package again and that they have had a rough year. I had to explain to them that we have all had a rough year, sorry, no! When I checked out the concierge said what time would you like to be picked up at the room to go to the airport since I paid for private transportation. I said how's 12 and was told that they would pick us up at the room. I went back down to say bye to some friends we had met and to tell my wife we had to go pack our bags and someone came from the front desk and said the airport shuttle was waiting on us and was leaving in 5 min.. After throwing another fit, they said no problem, he can wait on you 20 minutes. We go to the room and I tell the guy to give us 10-15 min and we will be ready. I sat my bags outside the door then the phone rang and the front desk called me griping saying the guy is waiting outside our room and needs to leave. I hung up on him and loaded up and got us out of this resort. I've been to some very cheap all inclusives in Cozumel and other places and had better service without being harassed than this place. The only reason i gave 2 stars is because we loved some of the employees and feel bad that they are stuck at a place i am giving a bad review to. The beach isn't the greatest in front of the resort for swimming or walking in the water, but is pretty. The resort is older but is updated and very well groomed. If you have trouble walking or climbing stairs, this is absolutely not the resort for you. We are almost 50 but athletic and love to exercise so we liked that we had a steep walk every day instead of waiting on transportation to go everywhere like some of the guests had to do. There are ALOT of other resort options in Costa Rica and if you are looking for a hassle free relaxing environment, this is definitely not the resort for you either.

Our stay occurred when Secrets had just reopened for a week. Occupancy was 10-20% and the staff was just starting to return to their jobs. The staff who were there were friendly and helpful. Service was topnotch! The property is a bit older but the rooms were renovated. Cabins are built on hills but we walked a few days when it was not raining. The shuttle van was convenient when we did not feel ilke walking.

We are experiencing crazy times and if you are like us, traveling was something that seemed taboo. I am happy to say, I have a different view of it now. We travel on average 3 times a year and I have yet to experience anything like this. The precautions that are taken are above and beyond. They are operating with an abundance of caution. Noticeably all public surfaces such as the front desk, restaurant counters, and dining tables are cleaned multiple times throughout the day. Public touchpoints, such as handrails, railings, elevators buttons, door handles, and knobs, are also cleaned frequently throughout the day along with activities center areas and surfaces. With that said, we could not have picked a better place to try to make 2020 a much better year. We had an incredible time! From beginning to end the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. I mean all of them! A staff that deserves special recognition is Merari from the entertainment; she is full of energy and my wife and I truly felt at home with her, my wife is not the type that would do the resort's activity but somehow Merari made her very comfortable and involve! THANK YOU!!! At the bars, I will say hands down the best drinks; I don’t think I have ever said that about any other all-inclusive resort. The staff was very attentive, shout out to Guillermo at the pool, and Alexandra at the preferred bar, great conversations were had. There is no buffet but there was always food. The restaurants were clean and the food, the food was great! They took special requests and if something was not on the menu, they made it happen. Thank you to all the dining staff, Shout out to Rachel at the seaside grill. Miriam at UVC was also amazing. Extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Do your research about the type of room you would like, there are a lot of hills to walk up to if you do not take the shuttle, but there is constant transportation. We were in room 105 Oceanfront and I would say it’s the most practical location. Note that rooms 103 and 104 have the best views with minimal trees in front of you. But we were extremely happy with ours. We slept with the balcony door open and the screen door closed. The ocean and birds' sound were therapeutic. If covid-19 is holding you up from visiting this amazing resort, I will tell you I felt more comfortable going here than going to the grocery store back home. They take this matter seriously, the whole country does. Go for it!
