We traveled to Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica from September 4th-12th, and had a wonderful time. The staff was amazing, especially Lori, Fabiola, Erick and Diego at the Seaside Grill; Nelly, Alexander, and Armando at Portofino; Ronald at Himitsu; Raquel, Alba, Adriana and Christian at Market Cafe; bartenders Victor and William; and shuttle drivers Steven, Diego, and Eli. The food was excellent, and I highly recommend both the parmesan-crusted lamb and the spinach tarragon cream soup at Portofino for dinner. Seaside Grill had fantastic salads for lunch, including the avocado salad and the Papagayo nicoise salad. For breakfast, I loved the huevos ranchero and the gallo pinto (Costa Rica's national dish of rice and beans.) The main pool was where the action was, with music, games, and activities, including a swim-up bar. However, there is also a "quiet" pool where you can chill out by the fitness center and spa, with a bar and snacks -- but it closes at 3:00 pm. The privacy of the bungalows was a very welcome change, and increased the level of exclusivity for the Secrets with the least number of rooms. The beds were very comfortable, and refrigerator was well-stocked. Be aware of the following issues: (1) the beach is not great, and is rocky in places, (2) you may need to take a shuttle between your room, the main lobby, restaurants and main pool, and the fitness center/spa/quiet pool -- but shuttles are usually quick, and (3) it seemed to rain for a little while on most afternoons or evenings. Again, the wonderful staff made this one of our best vacations ever! Major shout-out to Mariam of Member Services, and everyone in the Preferred Club for the outstanding service!

Just returned from Secrets Costa Rica and I was not impressed at all. I’m a UVC member with the brand and have traveled to more than 7 Secrets &Breathless resorts. I visited for 5days with my family (all adults). In comparison to the resorts I’ve visited recently within the past 3 months( St Martin/St James Jamaica) this resort has no poolside entertainment and barely a DJ,no constant bartender at the pool, no night club, nightly entertainment isn’t every night. This resort is extremely extremely laid back. Geared towards honeymooners and the older crowd. Preferred is not worth the money. There is no preferred pool or section on the resort. The preferred lounge is very very small compared to other resorts. Preferred check in took 2 hours due to them having one staff member. Like other resorts I was not greeted with champagne, just a cold washcloth. This is Secrets norm and this resort didn’t impress me. Previous reviews states the staff was friendly. Definitely not true, I never got Hola unless I said it first. I was scheduled for a late checkout and the Lobby receptionist called my very rude asking who told me I can checkout late and when as if I was her child. I told her to check the notes on my room and she said okay. The FOOD was extremely salty, but was still tasty. Their food selection compared to the other resorts were extremely limited. I was not happy with the same thing every night. No dinner buffet….this was shocking. Breakfast buffet was all of 10 items….also shocking. Room service also about 8 items and that chef was the best on the resort. The food at Coco beach 20 mins away is much better. We took a taxi there and it was a small strip of outdoor bars, restaurants, and cheap shopping. We absolutely loved this. We ate at Bambu, the beat food and drinks! The ROOM was always clean and perfect. No towel or washcloth shortages. No complaints here. We had a bungalow. This resort is built on a mountain and is very big and the hills are not for the faint of heart. It is a daily workout for real. I waited for transportation who was always no more than 5-10mins away. Shoutout to bartender Alexandria at the preferred lounge and William! They made the best drinks on the resort. Nelson was great remembered our names set up taxi and gave us water without asking. Waiter Ronald was so so sweet and nice , truly enjoyed him. All the drivers on the resorts were awesome, they did their thang. UVC staff Adriana and Miriam was so cool and dope. Overall this resort is a 4 star, but needs more effort into making it 5 stars. I would recommend this resort to the older older crowd, but no one under 50.

My wife and I spent 4 days of our honeymoon at this location in September and I had to apologize to her for not more thoroughly looking through the reviews. I feel that many people can be difficult to please, but I don't feel like either of us are that way. I want to start by saying that I was expecting a hotel that would be clean, well kept, and service that was both attentive and sincere. We found most of the staff to be attentive, with a lack of follow-through. This was our third resort of our honeymoon and they fell very short of the mark. Our room was clean, except for a layer of mold and mildew on the shower window curtain. There were two sinks in our room, with one of them not working at all. Both pieces of art were hung at angles, and missing pieces. The shower was handicap accessible with no curtain, and water would pool outside the shower. I was surprised to find the thermostat was set to go no lower than 70 degrees, with was a first for me in a resort of this caliber. Just outside our room was a walkway that was partially covered in a green algae that would become very slick during the evening rains. Our room had what looked to be mold growing on the ceiling of the room that had been painted over and bled through the paint. These things, along with worn furniture in the room made us feel like we were in a dated chain hotel. This property is set on the side of a hill overlooking the water, and while pretty, this means you will be spending large amounts of time waiting on shuttles to pick you up and drop you off. Walking up wet, steep hills won’t be an option for most. These shuttles have large stickers that advise guests to wear masks, but just over half choose to do so, and while masks are available and even offered, many guests choose not to do so and are transported with everyone else. In our 4 days at the resort, I never witnessed a transport van being cleaned or sanitized between groups being picked up or dropped off. While checking in I asked about the "Rendezvous" bar at the lobby and was told it was closed, and it was not open during our stay. The Aqua restaurant was closed for the duration of our stay as well. The pool has a completely tiled bottom, and some are missing leaving sharp edges. Something that was interesting to me was the swim up bar. Barracuda was not staffed, and staff from the bar on the pool deck serviced it very slowly. Also, they don't serve patrons in the pool after 6pm even though its supposedly open to 11pm. The Coco Cafe, touted as the place for a late-night snack closes for everything but coffee at 9:30 pm, and closes completely at 10pm. This was also the only all-inclusive resort we have stayed at where I have witnessed the bartenders pour bottled water into the drinks. Make sure and bring your reading glasses along with you, you will need them for the fine print on the coupons you receive. We were given a booklet of $200 in coupons at check in. The staff checking us in said to remember that with our honeymoon package we get 15 % off spa treatments, and here is a coupon book for the resort, including $80 to use at the spa. Upon checkout the spa treatment ended up being about $30 more than anticipated and when I questioned why I was told the spa honeymoon discount and the coupon can’t be used together. I asked for the manager and a gentleman named Daniel came over and told me that they couldn't be combined, and I paid by credit card, and signed the receipt "contest" and left. Keep in mind, I never signed the original booking I made for over a grand to begin with. As we were leaving, Daniel had security stop us at the gate and came to the car and made threats that if I didn't sign the receipt with my name, he would not allow us to leave, and would call the police. He also threatened to call Costa Rican Immigration so we would not be allowed to fly out. This experience was not a good ending to our honeymoon. I will not be staying at this location, nor recommending any AMR resorts to anyone.

Let me start off by saying Secrets Papagayo is a beautiful place, but nothing could beat how amazing their employees are !! My husband and I got the pleasure of meeting many amazing people, from waiters, entertainment team, house keeping, chefs and welcome staff. These people will go above and beyond to make sure you have the best experience in secrets Papagayo. The resort offers beautiful views, amazing food, and even better hospitality! We will for sure be planning another visit! Special shout out goes to the beautiful entertainment team, Marari, Neigar, Tania, Kathryn, Luis, and Nelson and the many others which who we did not catch their names !! They were more than entertainment team! They became very good friends! They throw beautiful shoes like the four elements, And the beetles, which we could watch over and over again and never get tired! Lastly I’d like to thank the amazing waiters, Jonathan, Randy, Andries, Hugo, Marcos, Yesner, Guillermo, Christian, and the amazing chef Jorge. Thank you soo so much for the fantastic experience you provided for us! Costa Rica will always have a special place in our hearts! PURA VIDA!!! -Mary and Marco-

Overall we had a great time. Food was great. However there were some small touches that make thiss resort a 4 star not a 5 star. No welcome drink on arrival and before you got your room, they were trying to set you up with a 90 min time share presentation. Bar seems to run out of the high end alcohol. Tennis court was flooded and never cleaned. There was also old Secret signage with missing letters. The staff was very friendly and the grounds were spectacular. Get ready for rain in the afternoon, which is a relief because it gives you a break from the sun.
