We just completed our wonderful stay at Secrets Papagayo! To say we had a great trip would be an absolute understatement. The people, scenery and experiences were beyond anything we could have asked for. One of our favorite people we met was Nelson, a driver on the resort, he made us feel like family and brought a huge smile everytime we saw him. We heard other guests talking about him and we were all wondering where he was as none of us saw him that day, turns out it was his day off but just goes to show the impact he has on the guests. Huge shout out to Jeanette our wedding coordinator, she was always there for questions and quick to respond to plan our vow renewal. When we arrived she met us in the lobby and showed us around the resort and made us feel welcomed and excited about our ceremony. It happened to rain the day of our ceremony and she was quick to come up with alternatives that we liked and to keep us dry. Silvia was our fabulous photographer who really loves her job and it shows! She made us feel comfortable and made the photo session fun and engaging. We really wanted pictures on the beach for the ceremony but the weather that day was not allowing it, Silvia offered for us to complete our pictures the next morning so we could get our dream photos on the beach, we cannot thank her enough for being so flexible. Food was great especially the seaside grill, people were so friendly and room/view was beautiful. You have to do the Arenal volcano and Night excursion with Amstar they were breathtaking! Hopefully you get guides Hernan or Brandon, they were knowledgeable and so much fun! Check out The Duke on the beach for a jet ski tour, so worth it! This for us was a dream vacation, so much so we were both teary on the leaving day. We will absolutely be back! This is not good bye forever Costa Rica but good bye for now! Pura Vida!!!!

Recently returned from Costa Rica and one of the properties we stayed at was here. Secrets is a nice property to stay at if you are wanting to "party" and spend a lot of time at the pool drinking and soaking up the sun and that all-inclusive lifestyle. We were there during the start of rainy season and my impression that there was a fair bit of open occupency, so remember that for context as you read my comments below. Secrets is big on the pool vibe, and they seem pretty decent. Nothing to write home about, but adequate. There's a cluster of pools right in the center of everything with bars and restaurants ringing them, and the chairs/umbrellas get taken by 9am every day. So, in other words, if you want a place to sit out of the sun, poolside, better drag yourself out there early and camp your spot out, or you won't get one. There's another pool that is the "quiet pool" near the spa, on the far side of the property, that also has a bar near it. No party anthems blasting on the speakers there, but it still has a bar - and it had open chairs the few times we walked by. As an all-inclusive, you can eat as much as you want, pretty much whenever you want. I would say the food is "ok" but a little bland. Costa Rica in general is not an amazing food destination, but I felt like Secrets lagged a bit in this department, even still. You certainly won't starve, but I wouldn't expect to be wowed either. The drinks were way better, and consistently good. Pina coladas in particular tasted very nice, as the days are quite warm and humid. The rooms are arranged in a sort of duplex fashion all over the property, where you'll have a suite that shares a wall with one neighbor. Our room was alright. There was a bit of an ant problem and it smelled slightly mildewy, probably owing to the all-around high humidity during our stay. The bed was comfortable and it was otherwise clean. Air conditioning strength was great and the water pressure and temperature was also fine. Limited selection of decent TV programming, unless you speak Spanish, or love the news, golf, or (of course) soccer. One "complaint" is that our room was pretty much on the far side of the resort from all the activities, food, and drinks. I don't mind a walk, but in the rainy season it starts raining in the early afternoon and doesn't seem to stop until well into the night, so you'll be using the shuttle services a lot if you don't want to get wet. Recommend requesting a room nearer to the main hub of activity, if possible. The beach at Secrets is better than some others nearby. It's black sand, with great water temperature, and on either end there's some nice lava rock formations that get exposed at low tide, making for some great tidepooling. We saw fish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, sea stars, hermit crabs, fiddler crabs, and prboably some other things I'm forgetting. Secrets has an activity team that sets up things to do throughout the day, and they have beach equipment you can use for free of charge. There's also a group of tour guides that hang out near the beach. I don't think these guys are affiliated with the resort, but they seemed like nice enough guys. I spoke with a friend who had been to Costa Rica twice in recent years and she recommended a great local guide she used. We also signed up with him while at Secrets and elsewhere in the country. I would like to give him a mention as well, since he was the cornerstone of our successful trip. The guide's name is Herson Segura and he operates a personal tour guide service (Spanglish Tours). He'll pick you up at the airport, arrange all your tours, drive you around from location to location - whether tour spot or hotel, and answer all your questions. This saves you having to rent a car or worry about insurance, driving, estimating transportation times, tour times, and whether you're booking the best tours or not - after talking with you about what tours you might be interested in, also considering the weather, time of year, and so on - factors that someone flying in for a few days or a couple weeks just isn't going to know. He's fully bilingual and a local, so he knows all that, and handles it for you. You pay him one fee, and all the rest is included. This allows you to maximize your time while on vacation and minimizes the amount you have to worry about. I found his rates to be very reasonable and would like to recommend him whether you're visting Secrets or anywhere else in the vicinity. We arranged everything with him over Instagram (IG: @hersonSegura) where you can see his photos and info. He's also reachable on WhatsApp at +506 8990 8115. Very personable, highly recommended. In our case, Secrets was the last of four properties we stayed at (not counting the airport hotel since we got in late). We stayed there for three nights and arrived directly on the beach via boat. Herson set up a fishing excursion for us that also served as the transportation between Andaz (across the bay) and Secrets - our final stop. While fishing, I caught a 100 pound roosterfish and we had a great time just being out on the water too. I would recommend Secrets to any couple who wants to socialize a lot and indulge in free food and drinks. I think our stay of 3 nights there was perfect - I would personally find it a little boring for longer than that, but that's just me. I would encourage anyone visiting Costa Rica to stay in several places just to see more of the country. It's not a big country but there is a lot of things to see. Lastly, as Hyatt has recently aquired Secrets as a brand, you can now book the property using Hyatt points and there will doubtlessly be changes coming to the resort as a part of the change of ownership. It will be interesting to see what changes.

We went to celebrate my birthday in May-June and we had an amazing experience. The incredible staff made our stay magnificent at this all inclusive resort. We really appreciated the attention to detailed service; from Luis at the front desk who made sure we were well taken care of, to Benlly in the pool area who surprised us with a birthday sweet treat, to Jonathan at the preferred area bar who masterfully mixed the best drinks (ask him about the Noble Wolf/Lobo Noble invention), to Luis the sommelier who learned our tastes and kept us intrigued with his wine suggestions, to the talented entertainment team who made every night even more fun, to the rest of the staff who would greet us by name with a big smile all the time. Pura Vida indeed! The food at the restaurants was very good. Seaside Grill had great stakes and the chef even took the time to come to our table one night and give us the recepe for the creamy hearts of palm delicious side dish. We went back a couple of nights to Himitsu for the glazed salmon dish and the staff who went out of their way to make our birthday evening a very special one. Portofino had consistently great pastas and catch of the day specials in a casual elegant setting, Aqua was also really good with lighter healthier options for a beautiful sunset dinner or a nice quiet lunch. Market Cafe was the choice for a variety of breakfast goodies and filling our water bottles with ice before taking off on an excursion. And last but not least, Coco Cafe was always there when we craved a coffee drink, ice cream or a simple smoothie. Oh, and in case all these options were not enough, the 24hr room service was available for those very late night munchies. Service at all restaurants was very attentive and they always made sure we didn’t have any food allergies. The beach area is beautiful and very clean. Black sand, warm water and very calm with almost no waves so we could float for hours. The main pool area can get a bit loud because there are fun activities throughout the day and 3 bars around it, but there is another pool in the Spa area that remains peaceful and quite romantic with a nice bar as well. Make sure to reserve a wooden bed with Nelson for a leisure day by the beach. Our room had just about everything we needed. A rain-style shower, quality amenities, luxurious bedding, minibar, good sized deck, and (if you are lucky to book room 372) a private pool. It is necessary to call the shuttle to move around the large and hilly property, and sometimes there is a wait, but that allowed us to see an ant eater, a white faced monkey, and plenty of iguanas in the lush and well kept grounds. Our stay here was truly magical. One of the best vacations ever. We even got to meet the General Manager, Don Ariztegui, who we could tell was very grateful for his team, respectfully greeting each one by his or her name, and making it look easy to keep up the level of excellency at this resort. Thank you Secrets Papagayo and AMResorts for the amazing stay. We are your newest number one fans!

Was a great place for an adult family vacation. Rooms were nice and the A/C worked well. The food was great and there was a variety of choices. We never had to wait more than 5 minutes to be seated. The servers, bartenders, and entertainment staff were all great (a shout out to Merari, Donald, and for going the extra mile to make our vacation wonderful!). The resort is very hilly but there are shuttles that will take you everywhere or we discovered it was easy to just walk to the different sides of the resort along the beach. I would definitely recommend this resort!

My husband and I had a wonderful time on our honeymoon at Secrets Papagayo. The wait staff was friendly, patient and helpful as I practiced my Spanish, and attentive. The bartenders were so fun and friendly and always ready to make a delicious cocktail (our favorites were Alexandra, Henry, Alonso, Kenneth, Jonathan, and Eduardo!). And the entertainment staff - oh my goodness - truly made our vacation such a fun time. A Beatles Tribute show with incredible dancing (Jostin and Najari), trivia, beach volleyball (Reymar), crazy games in the pool, snorkeling and kayaking (Esteban) - could not have been more fun. Thank you thank you to all of Secrets who made our honeymoon so special!

Now that I'm finally home and settled I don't normally write reviews but I absolutely had to for this resort. We(my husband and I) decided on this resort for our honeymoon because it caught our eye the most! We also picked it because they offered a covid stay(in case you test positive) they let you stay for 7 days( you just never know!) We stayed from May 10th-17th. Our initial honeymoon was the best time!. The staff, the food, the drinks and the grounds just so well kept and everything was just amazing! Before the restrictions were lifted you have to take a covid test before coming back into the country the day before departure. I tested positive and my husband tested negative. Juan the chief concierge met up with us and explained the procedure and that we were going to be moved to a new room and to go from there. What was initially told to us was we had to complete 7 days quarantine. We rebooked our flights and then were going to leave the following Sunday. The middle of our stay the airlines changed said rules and we had to stay for 10 full days and could leave on day 11. I wanted to explain that part to get to this part. Juan -- was the most incredible, attentive human being I have ever met. He made sure during our quarantine to check in, see how we were feeling(luckily no symptoms, neither of us got sick) and just kind of say what's up guys? He checked in on us EVERYDAY! When we finally got to leave, I was able to give Juan the biggest hug and just thank him so much for everything he did for us during our quarantine. We will definitely be back and we definitely will be checking in on Juan to see how he is! Oh! and the most important part Costa Rica let us stay there for 10 days NO CHARGE! This experience at first was a little bit of a nightmare but thanks to Juan for being so awesome, so transparent during the whole thing that I can't even give a bit of a complaint! We will definitely be back! If you stay on this resort you must see Jorge and rent a jetski to go on a tour of the are surrounding the resort to go find some monkeys(favorite part of our trip!)

I think I'll be choosing Secrets' moving forward. The property is small but 0 well kept. Overall, the staff was very nice and accommodating. I wasn't very impressed at the entry area, it wasn't as pretty as the pictures but, the more I ventured around the property the more impressed I became. The food was pretty good, a variety of options depending on the restaurant and well seasoned. The SeaSide Grill was my favorite; give the ceviche and NY Steak a try. The spa was fabulous. I received an 80 minute relaxation spa. I also utilized the hot tub and a sauna - all worth it. I also recommend using Franks Tours for booking excursions. You can find him on FB. I found him to be very responsive and thorough. The prices were reasonable and competitive.

The service was extremely unpleasant and even felt like they were mocking us several times. We arrived for dinner and we’re seated at a stand alone table while literally everyone else was seated at these comfortable booths. Our server came to our table last, despite us having been seated among the first. We were seemingly among the only, if not the only, lgbtq couple and it simply did not feel friendly towards our lifestyle.

I have stayed at a secrets before and it was such a different experience. Everything from check in, to all the shuttles to pools and restaurants, to check out took forever and the staff was super rude. While we were awaiting our room they suggested we eat. We noted which restaurant and they said they would get a shuttle. 30 min later we were half a mile to the restaurant which declined to serve us since we were not “preferred.” We explained we told the check in we were coming here and they did not mention limitations except for the Japanese restaurant. We were literally dismissed with a flick of the wrist. At the pool we could not get towels. Our room had mold in the shower. Our bed linens had stains. Ultimately we left after a day.
