This was our first trip to Belize and Hopkins Bay Resort made it our best trip ever. The beachfront villas was a winner for us. I had the 2 bedroom villa and it was 10 feet from the Caribbean Sea. The scenery and the constant breeze off the sea was great. The food was great, and freshly prepared from local farms in an outdoor kitchen.

Hotel's Favorite
Celebrating a friend's 50th birthday, we booked an entire villa at Hopkins Bay for a week of relaxation, excursions and fun. It could not have been more perfect! The staff at Hopkins Bay is top notch, and amazingly attentive. Everyone was very courteous and, as we have come to expect in Belize, very engaging and interested in us having our best experience. The villa amenities were better than I expected. We had a full kitchen, spacious seating areas and very large rooms. The view out the patio doors (which slide open completely) was of a gorgeous vista of pool and ocean. I'm pretty sure we spent more time on that patio than we did in the actual villa. On vacations, it typically takes me a day to get accustomed to the bed, but I slept like a baby right off the bat. From Hopkins Bay, it was quite easy to wander up the beach and into Hopkins proper, so that was an even better added bonus. If we didn't want to walk, the resort very graciously provided a van shuttle to wherever we might want to go at a moment's notice. That's not something every place I've stayed in the past has offered, and it was greatly appreciated. The restaurant, the Rhum Shack, was absolutely delicious and had quite the amazing happy hour. I'll address that more in it's own review, so be sure to check that out. We will definitely be visiting Hopkins again, and I'm positive we will be staying with Hopkins Bay again.

Excellent staff and very friendly. Accommodating to customer’s needs. Specifically want to call out Natasha and Velene at the front desk. Very friendly ladies and professional. My sciatic nerve started to act up and I could hardly walk, but Ms. Kira gave me an outstanding healing massage. After an hour on her table, I was walking. Definitely recommend this resort.

Beautiful location, staff is incredible. Robert helped us plan outstanding excursions, and gave us excellent dinner recommendations. All the restaurants in Hopkins are within walking distance, or you can get a ride from the resort. Several great places in Hopkins to grab groceries and beer for the room.

Great base of operation for our active family. We balanced relaxing around the resort, walking and biking the village of Hopkins, and the wonderful excursions organized by the resort. The food at Rhum Shack is excellent by any standards. As a total, across the menu, the best restaurant we’ve ever eaten, anywhere. We loved being in Hopkins and enjoyed the Garifuna people and food. Every meal set a new standard. The staff at the resort and the people of Hopkins (and really all of Brazil) are among the nicest people anywhere. Legit happy to have us around.

We stayed for 3 nights in June 2022 - started out shaky bc despite having our reservation they were not there to pick us up when we landed in Dandriga. I had to have Tropic Air call them to remind them we had landed on time and needed to be picked up. Someone from a neighbor property came and took us from airport to a hotel down the road so we could wait and have a drink. Upon arrival it was very quaint but the property needs some love- some painting, updating, attention to detail. The staff was friendly and helpful. Especially Tio who was always asking if we needed anything or offered us recs for in town. Our AC was not working the whole time we were there in master bedroom but they tried-worked all day adding freon etc and think they were replacing after we left. The water at property was brown and filled with trash and seagrass- they did rake it daily so not much to do about that- just the time of year. Sand fleas were bad but held them off with spray. Probably won't return as we were not wowed but I think if they fix a few kinks and clean up property a bit paying attention to detail ( replace lightbulbs that were out in our house and around property is easy and cheap fix) then it would bring it to 4 stars.

Hopkins Bay We arrived to a warm welcome and our names on the blackboard at the front of the hotel welcoming us! We were then asked for a driving licence to check in. We are from the UK and didn't plan on driving in Belize and so mine was at home. Luckily my husband had his. We've never been asked for this ever before at check in and so not sure what would have happened if we didn't have this. ROOM Our room, 1502, was the guest room of the 3 bedroom unit and the smallest bedroom and bathroom but still a good size and very clean. They did open our room up to the kitchen which gave us an extra huge space but we didn't really use this too much. One of the other rooms came off this and there was a large gap in the door. We spent the first day whispering not wanting to disturb them and didn't feel like we could use the space. The couple in this room moved the second day to a beach front villa and we felt a little more relaxed. The third unit is upstairs and the under stairs has a cupboard with padlocked cupboard doors into the guest room we were in.....it's a louvre style door and so lets in every bit of sound. As a result we slept badly as we could hear every sound. Fortunately they seemed to have checked out after this one night and so the other two nights we slept well. The villas are great for families but I just don't think they work at all in their current state for separate couples. Apparently our guide said the hotel does get a lot of comments about a certain kind of nightly activity keeping people awake!! The room itself was lovely. A great size, air conditioning and a ceiling fan and the decor was nice. The bedside lights had to be switched off at the switch by the bathroom and I always prefer a switch by the bed to do this. The bed was very comfortable and there was a safe provided. The bathroom was decorated in bright blue tiles and a really pretty sink. There were large bottles of body wash and conditioner and so bring shampoo (if you prefer separate items) and body lotion. The shower was fine and powerful enough. I didn't have a hairdryer and so asked for this just after check in, it wasn't there before my shower and so I asked again and hopped in the shower. It still wasn't there after getting ready and so I ended up going to reception with a towel on my head still and waiting about 10 minutes for them to find one. It was a good hairdryer in the end but it's a shame it took so long to get when it should have been in the room on arrival. The other odd thing was that we had only two hangers in the room which had robes on. We ended up putting the robes on a top shelf and had just one hanger each which was odd as the wardrobe was pretty big. The hotel is into greener living and so provides all guests with a water bottle which is great as we'd left ours at home. We had a water dispenser in the room which we could refill our bottles with which was excellent. We had an outside deck area which felt pretty private even though it was shared with a another unit as the areas have a little recess. We bought breakfast from Jashlenn's in town (only open Saturdays) and ate this on the deck one morning in the sunshine and it was glorious. However, be careful about the evening.....we got bitten so much in just 5 minutes on our first night by little bugs that make you bleed immediately. The bites didn't itch but left little red circular spots which lasted about two weeks. We didn't seem to get it elsewhere in Hopkins. POOLS/BEACH/WATER SPORTS/ACTIVITIES On arrival they apologised to us about the sargassum but told us there were two beautiful pools and water sports we could still enjoy. One pool was really busy with kids and so we went to the other and it was very green and so we couldn't get in. On our last day one guest was in the pool as we walked by and the guy from the restaurant approached her and we assume advised her to get out as she promptly left. I wouldn't have got in it if you'd paid me but there were no signs up to say not to use it. We did get time to use the other pool the next afternoon and it was pleasant and a really good temperature. The beach was fine despite the sargassum and I can only imagine how lovely it is when it's not there en masse. There were beach chairs to use, hammocks and fixed shades. It was all fine. We didn't try the water sports but others were giving it a go and enjoying them. We loved the bikes we could use to cycle into town. They were a little older but worked fine and were free. No locks but we didn't feel we needed them in Hopkins. We wanted to take a couple of trips out but the hotel has a set schedule and the trips we wanted were not running on the days we wanted. So we went to Get To Know Belize for our excursions to Cockscomb Basin and our chocolate making experience which were both brilliant. FOOD Upon check in we were given a welcome sheet which had a few QR codes and one was for the restaurant. There were a couple of veggie options on there and so decided to try it out for lunch. On arrival at the restaurant we were told that was an old menu and the new one was on the board in front of us. It didn't have a single veggie option so the waiter had to go and ask the chef to make something up. What came was rice and beans, a bit of salad and some plantain. It was fine to fill a gap but not great. The evening menu had a veggie tofu curry and I can't stand tofu and so we ate out in town for every lunch and dinner after this. We tried breakfast one day and it was okay but not great and compared to town, expensive. When we did sit down I scratched my finger on a staple that was sticking out of the table. I felt around the edges of the table and there were sharp staples poking out all over. I think they must have stapled table covers onto the tables the night before and had neglected to removed the sharp staples which was not good. We saw the same waiter pulling these out on our last day. The atmosphere in the restaurant was subdued and it didn't feel like a place we wanted to be. In contrast, Hopkins town was so friendly and we loved being out of the hotel. HOTEL GROUNDS There is a lot of potential here. The buildings look nice, there is some beautiful planting and the pools are pleasant but there are missing details. For instance, the edging of the path is broken in several places. If you have kids they could hurt themselves on this. The lights lining the paths need attention too as some have totally broken shades and others partly broken and it just looks a little unloved. We liked the welcome area with a cute little sink just before reception but the reception area seemed a little dark and sparse and needs a little love. There was building work going on by the pool on one of the bars but it didn't really impact us at all. HOPKINS We loved it! On arrival we were told to go out into town and enjoy the community. Admittedly we were a little nervous but we hopped on the bikes and stopped by Jashlenn's for breakfast the following day, Shadel's Magic Pastry Shop for punch and the supermarket. So many people waved and said hi. And it just got better. At night, we mostly walked into town and back and felt totally safe. One night after a 6km hike and 6mile bike ride we did take the complimentary hotel shuttle into town which ran until round 9pm. We could have asked the restaurant to call the hotel to get a lift back but we didn't mind the walk and we had so many people wish us a lovely evening. Try Ella's, JJs, Driftwood, Swinging Armadillo, Nice Cream and North Side Cool Spot for breakfast (pancakes are the best I've tasted!). We cycled to Jaguar Reef and back which is in the hotel zone. It's definitely more upmarket and holiday-like this end of town but it's missing the magic of central Hopkins! If we stayed at Jaguar Reef we wouldn't have come out here as much and we just had the best time in Hopkins town. OVERALL The hotel has a lot of potential. I think once the little maintenance issues are sorted and the rooms are configured to allow separate couples to stay there comfortably this places has so much to offer. I'd like to see the menu incorporate at least two vegetarian options and I would love to feel a better vibe here as the staff seemed a little more into their phones at times than service (very different feel to the great customer service we had by email before our stay and from the lovely drivers we had on our night shuttle and to take us to the airport). Generally, we felt far happier out of the hotel than in it which is not typical and for me a trip/hotel is all about the way it makes you feel. However, the bones are here to build something great and the location is brilliant.

Brought my niece for an impromptu visit to celebrate her recent graduation. The resort arranged our commuter flight and van shuttles to get us to and from Belize City, and everything was seamless. The resort itself was lovely. Quiet, private, beautifully landscape,, very clean and well cared for. Separate houses with 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms and full kitchens. 2 pools, complimentary bikes and kayaks. On site open air restaurant serving delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner focusing on local cuisine. Scuba/dive trips to the Blue Hole and barrier reef are readily available, as are massages on the beach. A local woman is also available to come cook a traditional Garifuna dinner in your house. Extremely friendly and helpful staff. We honestly didn't want to leave. Already planning a return trip next year!!

Stayed at Hopkins Bay 4/25 to 5/1, Weather, good food, and warm ocean are a given in Belize. The staff made the visit outstanding. Robert Lord should be your marketing Ambassador!
