First off, I want to start by saying I have never stayed in a hostel before, the concept just wasn’t a fit for me, being someone that enjoys having private space. In saying that I decided to give The Funky Dodo a shot based on many good reviews and I am here to add another good review. Even before I arrived in Belize the staff at The Funky Dodo gave me great advice and options to get to their place, (be sure to check their website for loads of great info). Because of the day and time that I landed I decided to take a private taxi from the international airport which was pricey but I knew that in advance and it was a beautiful ride. Roy and Anna were on duty when I arrived and had me checked into my private room within a few minutes. My room was comfortable, very basic and did have a fan and that’s about what I expected. The rest of the facility was very easy to navigate and there was always someone there to answer questions. The bathrooms and showers were always clean, the warm water showers are dependent on solar power which wasn’t very effective the first few days because we didn’t have much sun, but they did warm up towards the end of my stay. I didn’t really use the kitchen area much other than for a coffee in the morning and to slice up a papaya, I like to try local flavors when I travel so I tend to eat at local restaurants. The kitchen area was always clean though. There are plenty of comfortable spots to relax and socialize with other guests and being part of that was fun. The only real negative was the guys that get up early in the morning and make their breakfast and lunch in the communal kitchen, they can be kind of loud in their conversation and more than one other guest brought this up to me while I was there.

So again, this being my first hostel experience I have to give them a thumbs up for their service and for keeping the property looking nice and clean. They have compiled a massive amount of detailed info about activities in the local area and options for out of the area activities. They have definitely done their homework!

Thank you to all of the staff at The Funky Dodo for helping me enjoy my stay in Hopkins!

Wow! Thank you so much for your kind (and detailed!) review! We're so glad you enjoyed your first hostel stay, and hope it won't be your last. Hostels are the best thing when travelling, even if some guests are a little more boisterous in the mornings. Thanks again, we hope to see you soon and wish you safe and happy travels!

Peaceful, relaxed vibe. Not a party hostel, thank goodness! Quiet hours are respected by guests. Staff are thoughtful and helpful. 24/hr staff to ensure property is safe. Staff are also very knowledgeable and helpful re: local buses/transportation, as well as activities in the area. Facilities are clean and well-maintained. WiFi is strong. Property is just steps away from the beach, and is in a central location within the town. Two adorable cats live there; my partner and I loved snuggling with them on the hammocks. They’re so sweet! You can also tell they are trying hard to be eco-friendly (purified water available for filling your reusable water bottles, solar powered showers, food compost). We’ll definitely stay here again if we travel back to Hopkins.

My first time at a hostel, and 14 days of quarantine. I've been here since March and won't be leaving for a while. Exactly what I was looking for in terms of price, walking distance to everything and night security. They also have bikes available to rent for $1bz per hour.

The owners and staff are amazing. They literally treat me like family. Anna even cooked all of my meals during my quarantine (she's an amazing cook!) The rooms are spotless, beds are comfortable. They help with everything I need and answer all questions. Whatever I need, if they can't help me with it they know someone who can.

During lockdown, they even let me put a TV in the common area to use my Firestick. But when I want to read by myself in a hammock, they leave me alone.

I honestly can't find any negatives. I will be using this hostel as a 'homebase' to save money while I travel everywhere else. I was going to rent a house, but I'd rather be here. I recommend this place to everyone!

Post-covid review. I had a great one-night stay at Funky Dodo on 12/28/20. I booked the stay online for my first night in Belize since it is gold-certified. It was a clean room and had open air from the windows. I used the communal showers, which had open air filtering through. Regarding COVID, it felt very safe since the kitchen and bathroom were in an open space. I did buy some groceries at a store within 5 minutes of walking to cook. I used the gas stove and some spices that have accumulated over time. They also provide water for 50 cents a liter in the form of the blue water jug in the kitchen. It was very convenient!

The purpose of staying in Hopkins was so that I could visit Bocawina Adventures, which I was able to. It's about a 25 minute drive from Funky Dodo. It's also close to the Jaguar Preserve/Cockscomb.
Roy and Anna run the hostel together and they were very kind and gave me good tips on traveling in Belize. I had a great conversation with Roy!

As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe there. There are security guards that are there during the entire night. I would definitely recommend staying here!

We had such a great stay at the Funky Dodo! Anna and Roy the hosts were amazing along with the other staff members. My children and I, ages 14 and 24, stayed in the two treetop suites. They were fully equipped with a private bathroom and solar heated showers. The room was large, and the bed was comfortable. Located right on the main street of the village of Hopkins, it was easy to walk to all the local restaurants. I often overheard Anna and Roy helping guests arrange transportation and excursions, I had all of these things already in place or else I would’ve taken advantage of this. There is a fully equipped kitchen, as well as a dining table, and a majority of the guests were utilizing these amenities. There is a grocery store within a one minute walk of the Hostel. There is a lovely group of hammocks that are great for relaxing and reading a book. I also enjoyed my afternoon snuggles on the deck while I relaxed with one of the cats that lives at the hostel. I felt 100% safe, as they have a security guard who stays overnight, there is never no one on site. There is also parking in front if you have a rental car like we did. The hostel was extremely clean and well kept although I did not use the shared bathroom facilities, so I cannot comment on those. I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for accommodations that are centrally located and budget friendly. They had the dorm rooms as well as other private accommodations that use the shared washroom facilities. Thank you Anna and Roy and the rest of staff for helping to make our time in Hopkins enjoyable.

Anna and Roy were great and very accommodating. Met some very cool people who also stayed there. Room was nice and clean. Hammocks, walkways and seating were all cleaned/wiped down daily. I will definitely stay here again if I find myself back in Hopkins.

Excellent value. Rooms were clean and spacious. Showers are hot and water pressure good. Hammocks galore. Great kitchen. Staff was great. The owners, Anna and Roy, were very helpful in arranging tours and even flights. Anna opened the gates every morning so that we could walk on to the beach that’s in the Dodo backyard and watch the sunrise.

Had private accomodations. Room was nice and clean. Only problem was that our room was located over the kitchen and you could hear everything...starting around 5am, so Bring earplugs. The crowd wasn’t very social when we went, but the location was good to get anywhere walking.

We did have a talk with our security guard, and he did his best to keep thing quieter after that first boisterous morning, and you did seem satisfied with his efforts. Hopkins has nice beaches for a short stay on your way to another place. It is very pretty. The hostel is clean and pleasant, with guests from all over the world. The shared bathroom is clean, with four showers, four toilets, and four sinks. We always had hot water for our showers. The kitchen was clean and the other guests respected the use of the fridges.
We took the shuttle to go back to the airport in Belize City. The hotel owner made the arrangements, and, although the printed ticket stated the shuttle would be there at 8:30 am, the owner told us it was for 9:30, but that sometimes they came at 9:00. The following morning, the maid came to tell us that the shuttle was there. It was 8:25!!!!! The shuttle was nice and clean, and we arrived the airport with no problems. Everything else was fine.

Meals range from less than BZ$10 to over BZ$100, depending on what you want. A good Belizean meal (stew chicken, rice and beans) is usually BZ$10-15. Drinks- soft drinks and beer are about BZ$4. Wine is expensive. Mixed drinks with local rum BZ$5 or so.

Yep. bus frm Belize to Belmopan, and Ritchie, James, Griga, or any bus going to Dangriga. You must change buses in Dangriga. There is a 1020 bus to Hopkins and a 1730 bus to hopkins. A taxi from Dangriga will run you about 40BZ, negotiable, to Hopkins. There is really only 1 major road and the bus will take you past Funky Dodo and drop you off. Alternately take any bus from Dangriga south( bus terminal people will assist) get off and hitchhike the 5 miles to the coast. During daylite hours, this is accepted practice and cool way to meet people. Good luck!
