Outstanding hostel centrally located in a really chill town. The owners are so kind. We really enjoyed the hammocks and the mangos The place was clean and green. Bikes for rent super cheap. Comfortable beds
I stayed at the Funky Dodo with 6 of my friends in their dormitory rooms (8 beds in a room), and we had a great time. One of the owners, Roy, is definitely a character but is a great host. He gave all my friends and I towels for free and gave great recommendations for things to do in Hopkins. I didn’t catch the name of the other owner, but she was very sweet and kind. What I thought made the hostel so nice was the mix of people staying there. While our group was at Funky Dodo, there was a Swiss dude, a Portuguese girl, a British girl, two Dutch guys, a few French guys, and some other Americans. It was cool to see and talk to all people from different countries.
My partner and I stumbled on this place--after initially being put off by the word "funky" in its name. We got a spacious private room with a private bath. Breezy, nice courtyard, decent coffee in the morning. Lovely owners. Close to everything. Stay here!
Enjoyed our stay, the treehouse feel was great. We were rained with sweet mangos from the tree. Very peaceful feel hammocks fresh coffee every morning. Perfect area, walking distance to everything. I would definitely recommend. Perfect for any budget
Great hostel on the coast in Hopkins. Just off the beach. Nice courtyard with hammocks and an outdoor kitchen. Balcony overlooks the courtyard. Coffee ready in the morning. Super friendly staff that were great with suggestions on where to go in Hopkins
Anna and Roy were great and very accommodating. Met some very cool people who also stayed there. Room was nice and clean. Hammocks, walkways and seating were all cleaned/wiped down daily. I will definitely stay here again if I find myself back in Hopkins.
Amazing place to stay. Anna and Roy were the best host ever and went out of their way to help. Would not hesitate whatsoever to choose the funky dodo again on our next stay. ..and the mangoes that fell on our roof every night were delicious and free.
Post-covid review. I had a great one-night stay at Funky Dodo on 12/28/20. I booked the stay online for my first night in Belize since it is gold-certified. It was a clean room and had open air from the windows. I used the communal showers, which had open air filtering through. Regarding COVID, it felt very safe since the kitchen and bathroom were in an open space. I did buy some groceries at a store within 5 minutes of walking to cook. I used the gas stove and some spices that have accumulated over time. They also provide water for 50 cents a liter in the form of the blue water jug in the kitchen. It was very convenient! The purpose of staying in Hopkins was so that I could visit Bocawina Adventures, which I was able to. It's about a 25 minute drive from Funky Dodo. It's also close to the Jaguar Preserve/Cockscomb. Roy and Anna run the hostel together and they were very kind and gave me good tips on traveling in Belize. I had a great conversation with Roy! As a solo female traveler, I felt very safe there. There are security guards that are there during the entire night. I would definitely recommend staying here!…
My friends and I stayed at Funky Dodo on a post-university trip to Belize in 2017. This was our first hostel of many across the country and we loved it here! While we were there, Roy and Anna, the owners, got married and invited us to join in eating their wedding cake! After moving on to another hostel, we realized we had left behind a phone and watch. We emailed Anna and Roy and they mailed it to us at to our next location. They didn't even charge us for the mail! I've been meaning to write a review ever since... better late than never? I've stayed at a lot of hostels since and the hospitality at Funky Dodo is unmatched.
We had a quick overnight trip to Hopkins and were looking for a well located, clean, friendly, and economical place to stay. Funky Dodo checked all of the boxes for that. The accommodations are modest but the common area is great with lots of seating areas to read, play games, cook meals, or mingle with guests. The beach is just a few steps away and is fantastic for long walks or catching the sunrise. Owners Anna and Roy go out of their way to make guests comfortable and were fun to talk to.
