This place is a gem !!! We were greeted upon arrival by Angel, the property manager. He answered our questions, gave us some activity information and showed us to our bungalow….. such a polite and professional gentleman !! We had to pinch ourselves !!! Our unit was steps away from the sea with palm trees in our front yard . The unit as well as the entire property was immaculate! They think of everything to make your stay comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with nice dishes and quality pots and pans…not your typical accessories. They have a sea kayak, hammocks as well as bikes to rent. Super convenient location and we love being in the not so touristy part of town !!! Thank you for this amazing stay!
Our time at the White Horse Guest House was picture perfect! The property is meticulously cared for by the manager, Angel, who is truly an angel. His friendly disposition and helpful nature made our stay so relaxing. Our lovely room, the gardens, porch, and beautiful beach area are immaculate. We loved lounging in the sunshine, playing corn hole, swinging in the hammock and just chilling in this little oasis. Miss Maye made sure we had fresh towels! The town of Hopkins is wonderful! We rented bicycles to explore this gorgeous area and dined at so many great restaurants right on the ocean! Thank you White Horse Guest House for giving us happy memories of our time in Belize! We will return!
We stayed 5 nights in a beach cabana (there are 2) and had an awesome time. We did not use our AC as the ceiling fans and sea breezes kept our cabana comfrotable; we loved our little shaded porch with chairs facing the Carribbean views. The rooms are clean and well-taken care of, and have well-equipped little kitchens. Angel (manager) was available and super-helpful. He helped us procure a tour (tubing and waterfalls) and taxi's, and was a great source of information on Belize, the town, and the area. The location is good with a grocery store next door and restaurants nearby. Nearby music bars can be a bit noisy on weekend nights. We swam extensively in the sea; the beach is raked and cleaned daily which prevents sand fleas. Great beach chairs, hammocks, free kayak, and coconuts to drink from the beach coconut trees. We liked the locals and the ambience. …
This is our third time in Belize and third time at the White Horse in Hopkins. Cabana 1 has quickly become our home away from home. The location is perfect…right on the beach with a spectacular view. The caretaker Angel seems to be on duty 24/7 for any issue no matter how small. He has fabulous recommendations for excursions at rates that are very reasonable and goes out of his way to make sure the guests are happy. It has ample parking and is right next to a grocery store and within walking distance to some great restaurants. If you’re on the fence, do yourself a favor and book here…you will not be sorry.
To start, I have to say the weather always has an impact on impressions. Except for the first day which started with rain at the airport as we walked along the tarmac, moved onto a sunny afternoon with calm seas and waves, and ended with a fierce thunderstorm in the middle of the night, it was quite windy most of the week which limited beach activities. We did get out on the kayak once and swam every day, but the waves were quite big which was limiting. The weather was always hot (29) and humid so we used the AC. Hopkins is definitely a “backwater”. A small laid back village, Garifuna culture, not a lot within the village itself except a few restaurants, bars, coffee shops, a bakery (nice) and 3 Chinese supermarkets! The beaches are lovely, long, easily accessible and good for walking along, although strewn with garbage along most of it. There seems to be some development outside the village towards the south. We spoke to several expats (US) who had either moved down there or were thinking of buying and building. Several described Hopkins as Placencia 20 years ago. White Horse Inn: very well kept. Right on the beach which is maintained as well as can be. We stayed in Room 4. It was smallish with little cupboard or storage area for clothes, etc.. The room could use a toaster, sunblock blinds on the beach side and a couple of glasses, plates and a knife to go with the coffee maker and microwave. The Inn is very central, located across the lane from one of the supermarkets (good for shopping) which means there can be traffic (foot, motorcycles, cars) sometimes driving along it. On the other side is a vacant lot which may have people wandering through and backs onto Ella’s Cool Restaurant and Bar. Great place to eat. Quiet in the morning, some music in afternoons and definitely in the evenings until midnight (later and louder on weekends). They love the drums and loud music! Staff are very helpful. Mrs. Mae, the housekeeper is lovely. Angel, the manager, can set up any trips (day trips on land or snorkeling). There are several other guest houses in the village, most seemed to be in quieter locations. We enjoyed the local bakery (Caitlins) and Kat's Coffee Bar. The big question is what are you looking for. I would say it is a good place if you have a car (many do) and are doing day trips on the mainland and returning at night and maybe stay 2 or 3 days. We had to skip a trip to the reef for snorkeling thanks to a stomach bug and also the rough seas. I am a light sleeper and found the Inn too noisy at night because of the entertainment next door. There was little to do except go for walks, read, watch some World Cup on TV and also some Netflix. So, great if you want to simply lie back and relax with a few excursions. …
My wife and I stayed in Bungalow #1 for several nights, before and after 5 nights at Glover’s Atoll Resort. We were satisfied with the condition of White Horse’s facilities, its beachfront location (within half a block of a good grocery store and several restaurants), and our treatment by the staff. In particular, onsite manager Angel served effectively as our concierge, recommending restaurants, reserving taxis, and renting us bicycles. The mattress on our bed was heavenly, especially luxurious after our stay in a primitive hut out on Glover’s Atoll.
Beautiful weather and a breeze pretty much all day. The bnb was right next to a supermarket, so we could walk to get supplies/food for the mornings. There was also a gift shop set up to provide snorkeling tours of the barrier reef as well. There were 2 very sweet dogs that greeted us every morning. The black one we named Wilson and the white/tan one we named Wendy. They were always with us and we were sad to leave them there. I left some flea and tick spray there for their ears (flies were bothering them, not fleas). All I ask is whoever stays there treats the dogs with kindness, maybe throws a good petting session in, acknowledges them, and sprays their ears occasionally. They deserve the best life they both can have.
We loved our stay in one of the bungalows. You are right on the beach with the most beautiful view. The bungalow was comfortable and has a full kitchen to use if you want to. There are many eating spots close by to chose from also. We were there to celebrate my husband’s 78th birthday, and our 57th anniversary. It was a wonderful place to stay for those celebrations.
I stayed at Inn@whitehorse for a week in June & I should say I was extremely please with my stay there. First of all, the rooms are well maintained, very clean, up to date & comfortable. Also, this guest house is at a perfect location, right in front of the ocean, it is also located about 1 minute walk to a supermarket open everyday until 8pm, a chinese restaurant open until 11 at night, a pharmacy & there are a lot of different restaurant choices at walking distance. This property is owned by 2 foreigners but taken care of by local staff & I should say they are doing a perfect job! Thanks to Angel for his customer service that goes above and beyond & to Mae for her cleaning & laundry service which is reliable, fast and very reasonable in price! There are also 2 other staffs which were helping out with cleaning the beach & changing towels and water when needed which were both professionnal & very helpful. I would recommend to everyone who does want a great vacation, safe environment, great rooms but most importantly amazing staff to feel the great vibe of Belize. Thank you again for an incredible stay! I will definitely be back.…
Really, I wish I could give White Horse 6 stars. The location can’t be beat! Walkable to all the tourist spots and local joints and right on the water. Guests are welcome to borrow water gear (inner tubes, wake boards, etc.) which is irresistible being right on the beach. You’re also allowed to head over to other nearby hotel/resorts and share they’re swimming spot, dock, and lounge nets. I’d recommend biking there and not walking along the beach like my friend and I did..now we understand why Angel seemed a bit discouraging when we told him our walking plan haha Ms. Mae worked so hard to ensure our room was clean and we had everything we needed. The manager, Angel, went above and beyond our expectations for hotel/hostel staff. He always made himself available no matter what he was working on, the time, or how small our questions/concerns were. He was friendly, respectful, and knowledgable, eager to provide tips for places to visit/eat and answer any questions we had about Hopkins, the culture, or where to find BlackBerry wine lol. He made booking tours effortless. There are also a couple masseuses that visit seemingly everyday (weather pending) offering they’re services as competitive rates (embarrassingly, I’ve forgotten their names). My friend and I got facials and massages and were very happy with the service. I would recommend for anyone interested that you haggle. We first declined due to the pricing being slightly more than RMTs at home (Canada)!! And they quickly dropped their pricing more appropriate to our budget. After visiting the Cayes, my friend and I fell in love with Hopkins and were so impressed by the customer service at White Horse, we ended up cancelling the last leg of our trip to Placencia and San Ignacio, and extending our stay. Again, Angel was so accommodating and helped us connect with our airline when we were struggling to change our flight online. I loved the “go slow” attitude in Caye Caulker, but my heart is in Hopkins. If I ever return, I’ll be staying at White Horse…
