Spent a week in Hopkins Belize. People there are wonderful! Very friendly and hospital. We honestly felt so welcomed. You didn’t pass a soul without a “hello”, “good morning”, “beautiful day”. Dorothy and Jabbar were our hosts at Lebeha Cabanas. You just can’t ask for someone to go over and above more than they do. Right from the start of planning, Dorothy was so helpful with all our newbie questions. She never lost patience with us, giving us many helpful tips along the way. There were a few problems with the water during our stay but nothing that would stop me from visiting again. The large deck facing the sea made up for any kind of bump in the road that we encountered. No A/C, no problem. The breeze you get from the water kept things at the perfect temperature. The beach area is kept clean and raked regularly. We had 2 cabanas rented between 4 friends. All of us had comfortable beds, including the futon in Del Playa, Grocery stores, fantastic restaurants and bars within a close walking distance. Our new friend Barry the guard dog took good care of us during our stay. The only thing that we would have changed would be that we should have rented both the larger cabanas, as they are side by side. We didn't need that much space, but our shenanigans did disturb our neighbors. Just having too much fun!

I came to southern Belize for the Garifuna Settlement Day festival, and was lucky to learn about master drummer Jabbar, and that I could take a drum lesson on the beach, at his Lebeha Drumming Center in Hopkins. I learned rhythms unique to the Garifuna, and Jabbar is a wonderful teacher. I can't wait to return, and it was so fun to come home and share what I learned with friends. Jabbar told me next time to make sure to go to the Driftwood bar and club on Tuesday nights, when there's a jam of Garifuna drummers.

Stayed here for 4 nights over the Garifuna Festival Celebrations. The cabana was clean, Dorothy and Jabbar are incredible and Barry and Hero the dogs are the cutest! Walk the beach to the best food, or relax on the beach feeling like your own private getaway. The laid back feel and relaxed atmosphere make for a great place to stay. As with anywhere in Hopkins - be aware of the sand fleas when walking the beach

My family of 3 stayed in the Del Mar cabana for 4 enjoyable days. Dorothy, who lives just behind the cabanas, was an attentive and helpful host. She even helped us pay for Noawel's snorkeling tour with a credit card so we could save our limited cash. The cabana is tastefully decorated, but also well-worn, in a way that fits north Hopkins, which doesn't have the upscale places of the southern beach. (The Del Playa cabana apparently is newer.) Everything was perfectly functional. The large deck is sunny in the morning and shaded in the afternoon. Where else can you have a private cabana with kitchenette right on the beach at this price? Hopkins is lucky to have Lebeha. There are several small places to eat within a few minutes walk, and even the center of town is not too far. The only issue we had was the morning of our tour, none of the restaurants close by were open early enough for us. Most days North Side Kitchen was open early. We also enjoyed Queen Bean and Laruna Hati. The Driftwood, which used to be next door, has moved down near the Village Store, but there is a small new bar right by the old location. The beach was great for cooling off in the heat of the day, but note that Belize and the Caribbean have a growing problem of rafts of Sargassum seaweed washing ashore. When we were there in April, we only had to wade through a narrow band to get to clearer water. Cooling off in the shower was a little harder because the Del Mar shower only has warm water. I resorted to ladling cold water from the sink over myself. (I happened to notice that the Amarillo cabana has cold water in the shower.) More powerful ceiling fans also would have been nice. The wifi worked fine for us.

The Cabanas at the drumming centre are one of the more budget options while staying in Hopkins yet they did not feel like budget at all, especially with the view that they came with. They were well maintained and you can tell that there was a lot of of love and care put into the place. The owner was fantastic and offered us any assistance that she could in booking excursions as well as rides to and from the airport. These cabanas are right on the edge of town but the walk or bike ride is only a few minutes to all that Hopkins has to offer. There is a nice breeze that come off the ocean at night so the rooms cooled off nicely which definitley helped since there is no AC.
