We would be regarded "regulars" to the lodge but our last trip was quite disappointing when our 2x Bedroom VIP Apartment was given to another guest despite making prior bookings a few months in advance. The lodge staff didn't have the courtesy to call us to confirm if we were going to check-in instead just gave away the apartment and then told us they didn't know why it was given away. Very disappointing

Masurina Lodge, in Alotau, Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea is a perfect blend of tradition and modern western lifestyle. It's unique because it isn't your typical tourist hotel and doesn't even try to be.

Masurina Lodge has a wide range of accommodation available. The Family lodges are great and consist of twin bedrooms, a bathroom and toilet and a family/dining area and kitchen.

The rooms mostly have sattelite TV and free to air tv along with phones and you can get internet and fax facilities at reception.

There's a really nice inground pool as well as a restaurant, 2 bar areas and a cofee shop as well. Rates are competitive by local standards and the customer service is great. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff.

Masurina Lodge is decorated by beautiful local wood carvings and Murals. In fact almost every wooden structure around the bar areas is covered in story telling carvings creating a beautiful atmosphere for gathering in the late afternoons after exploring Alotau township.

Walking into town is a short 5 minute walk, but does include a bit of a hill. The upside to this is the views across Milne Bay during the walk. A must do whilst staying here is visiting the local Alotau Market .

Masurina Lodge is used regularly by repeat customers such as local, provincial and federal government agencies when sending staff to Milne Bay and also by tourism operators such as www.wildpng.com who operate more remote tours in the area and use the lodge as a jump off point.

This kind of repeat and local business speaks volumes for the lodge.

One more highlight, if you happen to be there on a friday night is there 'family barbeque'. This is a suprisingly popular event amongst the local ex-pat's and local business owners. There's always a laugh or two and because Alotau is really a very small community, it's a great way for the locals to catch up.

Stayed during a business trip. Beautiful room, very comfortable, and spacious. Couldn't get an Iron and Ironing Board to iron crushed clothes. When I enquired about it, I was told I could get a lady in the laundry to do it for a price...

Food in restaurant was tasty but plain at the same time. The Café food looks great though. Comfortable bar, great atmosphere.

Thanks for your review. Our laundry and ironing service is free, so I will look into why you were told it wasn't.

I was recommended to stay at this place by local friends. I had spent the previous week in a remote location and was looking forward to a hot shower and a rest. I was disappointed. Checked in and went to my room which looked ok, but had a tv that came from the 80's. Went to make coffee, and the powdered milk sachet was so old it wouldn't dissolve in the hot water. Hmm. Went to the shower and both shower taps were labelled hot. So turned one on, and then the other, and both were cold. Stone cold. Arrgghh. Tried to get hot water from the hand basin and none came out. Nothing. The shower was dirty, with old soap scum in the soap holder, and the tiles were disgusting. The tv when I went to turn it on didn't work, and the only chair in the room was so uncomfortable it was un-useable. Very disappointed in this place which looked great everywhere else but the room was crap. Will not stay here again. I would rather take my chances elsewhere.

Hi Darren, I'm very sorry you've had this experience, but appreciate your feedback. My husband and I took over the running of Masurina Lodge 2 years ago and since then the lodge has been undergoing renovations, but we know we still have work to do in some of our rooms. If you are prepared to give us another chance when you next travel to Alotau, please contact me directly - tracey.abel@masurina.com.pg - and I will ensure you are given a room that has been renovated (1 night FOC), along with a complimentary dinner voucher for our restaurant. Kind regards, Tracey

Went ashore on a "Cooking Tour" where we prepared a feast type meal with local ladies. Premises were spotless and staff friendly. Tour took us on a tour of the town with a great commentary. Went to the Lodge visited their war museum, great pool and premises and furniture was made from a beautiful variety of local timber. Sensational. We had our lovely meal and before going back to the ship went for a quick tour of markets, stopped to buy what we wanted. Thanks to Jeff and his staff it was a combination of the other cruise tours and the clay pot cooking and feast thrown it. Absolutely loved it.

The Masurina Lodge is a place where everything seems to be in harmony, it is nicely decorated and gives one a calm feeling. My room was spacious and spotless clean, aircon, fan, TV, water heater, everything is there. The reception and bar area are a place where to take a drink and snack in beautiful surrounding. Breakfast and dinner are served as buffet with a good selection. The breakfast eggs are at 30 Kina very high prized but if one is satisfied with cereal, cornflakes, jam and toast then the beakfast is included in the room rate. There is a pool and 2 tables for snooker. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Internet access either via the Pc near the reception or wireless is available against a modest fee. Alll in all I couldn't find anything to complain about except beware of the slippery tiles in the shower.

The staff are friendly and helpful. They are very welcoming.Stayed at the Masurina Lodge which have beautiful spacious rooms that are air-conditioned for 6 days. There were some issues with the running water. The breakfast which was continental which was not good. There are also evening meals with local cuisine. The bar area used fans to circulate the air. There was a swimming pool.

Its a very nice lodge and its more run like a family lodge. The rooms are basic but very clean and the cafe has nice food to offer. There are not many things to do in Alotau but walks in the bush and diving or snorkeling. People in PNG are very nice and kind and a visit to the market is a good thing.

Masurina Lodge has a small pool and good security, its the best place in Alotau. Don't take the rooms in the main building, especially on the weekends. Its better to be in the other buildings far away from the bar.

Internet is working but very expensive, 10 USD for 2 hours. Warm water in the morning is not always available.

First time in Alotau and check in at Masurina Lodge..i made reservation on Trip Advisor for 3 nights..i arrived one day later and reservations was moved forward .
My commodation was paid through credit card by my sponsors.i stay in for 3nights and on the day of check out I was told to pay 3night. Which they should have advise me during my stay so I should have sorted it out. I even ask on the first day and they said everything is paid for. It was frustrating to know at that time when I can't reach my sponsors to confirm.so I had to pay. At the airport my sponsors call and when I ask about the accommodation/ they confirm 3nights paid. So I call Masurina and speak to Lindze she said it was unrefundable. Anyway, I could not travel due to bad weather and flight was cancel. The airlines rescheduled our flight the next day and all our accommodation and meals paid to Masurina Lodge. So I went to Masurina and was ask to pay K200 to get a room not knowing that the rooms already paid. I checked out next day and thinking that I would get my refund but sheLindzs said she'll will not refund/she need some confirmation first.
Im tired and this lady Lindzs should be fired because she overcharged me and denied my rights for the free accommodations that was already paid by Air NIUGINI. My advice is to all travellers to be careful when dealing with this lady at Masurina Lodge Reception. Up till now i didn't get any refund and no communication from Masurina. Staff are friendly, the food is good and the rooms are perfect but this lady LINDZS need to be removed from front desk/ she is very RUDE and UNFRIENDLY, WORSE CUSTOMER SERVICE from her.

We recently visited Masurina Lodge and had a lovely day
The SP beers were nice and cold and at a reasonable price
We met the chef who recommended chillie crab and it was amazing....so delicious
Jerry showed us through the war museum and around the grounds of the Lodge
Anyone who is visiting Alotau should make the effort to walk up the hill to Masurina Lodge, and Jeff’s bar.
Thank you
