This place in its heyday must have been amazing. Its proximity to the caves make it handy but must admit in hindsight with more planning I probably wouldn't have stayed in waitomo township as you can get there, see the sights and then keep going. This place was nice to experience old world charm if just for a night. It's... More

This hotel will take you back in time! The locals say this place is haunted and it's easy to see why. With old school decor and creaking floors, this place is amazingly creepy and beautiful. No need to sacrifice amenities though. Every room has tv, blow driers, mini fridge and wi-fi. We absolutely loved the amazing ambiance this place had.... More

When I called the hotel I said we'll be there early and if possible would like to check in 2 hours before checkin time and the one on the phone said it's all good for us to check in early. Then when we arrived the crew in the reception area told us its not possible. So we just strolled outside... More

We stopped here the night before we did a tour of the caves and yes some of the areas maybe look a little old but if they did update it it would probably lose some of the character. Rooms were clean and beds were comfy. We had a twin room rather than a double (can't remember what we booked to... More

It was my own fault, I booked in a hurry and didn't read any reviews. This place would be great for a boys weekend, but not for a couple. The picture of the room looked amazing (the bed) but that was as good as it got. This place is really old and not up to hotel standards. Old decor, the... More

I won't even say that I stayed here, but I did check into this hotel in early August. It is a very old building, and upon checking in I felt uncomfortable, which I thought I could get over. After checking in I went on a tour of the caves, and upon my return I still remained uncomfortable or to put... More

We appreciate the effort you have put into your review. We are sorry our hotel did not meet your expectations. The room you booked is our entry level room, smallest rooms at just $83.00 per night. We believe it is great value for money so close to the Caves. The hotel has varying room sizes/categories and your room size was... More

We decided rather than visiting Hobbiton and Waitimo Caves in a combined one day trip from Auckland, we would stay over after visiting Hobbiton on the first day. We chose the hotel as the most affordable on Booking.com for our booking for two rooms. We chose a queen size double room and a king size double room both with en... More

one word to describe this hotel: creepy. not too sure about 'old world charm'. the rooms were not that clean either (heaps of hair stuck on the bed runner). this hotel needs a massive uplift, the wallpapers are peeling, the cupboards are peeling. the lace lining the bed head was also quite worn. bathrooms also need some uplift. front desk... Totally disappointed by the deceiving images of this hotel on the Internet . Smelly rooms ,needs urgent restoration ...NOT RECOMMENDED Staff friendly and apologetic however does not compensate for shoddy rooms . Booked via an agent as 5*

Really enjoyed staying here, great atmosphere and lovely staff, nothing is too much trouble. Breakfast very good. The massive bed was super comfortable. The place oozes history, well worth a visit :-)
