Isla Hoblox is a small, picturesque island not yet overrun by tourism, and Villas Chimay is located on one of the most serene parts of this delightful paradise. The hotel with its handful of bungalows is perfect for those, young and old, who desire a quiet respite close to the beach and nature. Simple choices for recreation are available: boat & kayak trips, birding, walks to town or to more remote beaches, swimming, or simply swaying in a hammock on the porch or under a beach palapa. Town is close enough to walk to for restaurants or shopping, but it's possible to spend the entire day in the Villas Chimay area as well. Petra and her staff serve an excellent continental breakfast in their small straw-roofed, screened in, sandy-floored restaurant, and they also offer mid-afternoon light meals. Petra and Andres, the managers, and their staff Marisol, Roberto, Patricia and others offer friendly, helpful, but always unobtrusive service. Another bonus is that visitors come from many countries and it's interesting to meet and chat with other guests. Is this the place for all who love a low-key tropical vacation? Maybe not. July was certainly hot and humid, and Villas Chimay is not air-conditioned, but it does have fans and plenty of windows to open to catch breezes--when there were breezes! And insect repellent is a must. Even with those realities, for us it was a vacation of dreams in a small resort that's ecologically responsible as well as beautiful.…
If you're looking for isolation and a intimate, warm, personal atmosphere, you should seriously consider Villas Chimay. The property is far far from the others and is on the opposite end of the beach from the other, larger hotels. One can easily make up for the commute to dinner in town by renting a bike or golf cart, but you cannot beat the location and feeling of having an entire beach to yourself. There are only five cabanas at Chimay and they each front the beach and unlike most of the rest of Holbox, the golf cart track does not run between the water and your cabanas. This was the only fortunate effect of Chimay having it's famed restaurant taken back by the rising sea. It now sits as ruin, blocking golf carts and providing homes for both iguanas and sea urchins. It is simply lovely. Petra, a hard working Swiss woman was the host when we were there in February of 2008. Clearly food is still an important affair at Chimay since Petra takes great care in providing visitors with a lovely breakfast (try her Muesli!), a snack in the afternoon and beer and water about whenever you need it. Because it is an eco-hotel you'll have to get used to the composting toilet and low water pressure. After a day or two this became a part of the charm and fit nicely with the traditional Mayan and local materials and architecture of the cabanas. The lack of AC was never a problem since the close ocean breezes and cross ventilation were adequate. Sadly, the rising seas may one day force Chimay off the map, and rumor has it, Petra may be moving on. Book it now!…
My daughter and I just spent 3 nights at Villas Chimay and found it to be a wonderful little place. The rooms are lovely and the folks who run it were friendly and helpful and always available for whatever we needed . July is hot and humid, so be prepared. Holbox is idyllic and looks to be poised for development, so get there soon.
I stayed for my last two nights on Holbox at Villas Chimay. It's located about a kilometer from the town center and nicely secluded. It was a great contrast from staying near the town center. The resort is also eco-friendly, which is important because of its location on the island. Petra and Manfred, the managers, were very friendly and great cooks.
This was one of our favourite hotels during our trip to Yucatan ! It has a beautiful quiet location on the quiet island of Holbox, so it's the ultimate insider tip for really relaxing holidays. It was great to stay here for a few days after traveling around and before leaving back home. We felt very much at home after the warm welcome by the hosts, Dunya and Gabriel. Gabriel's cooking skills are excellent, we'll never forget the lobster! We enjoyed the georgious beach just in front of our individually decorated cabana. The whale-shark-watching trip is unforgettable. We really loved this charming place.
