I really have to start by saying there is a lot to love about this property! It's unique and on the best stretch of beach on Holbox that I could tell. Karina (I think that was her name) was a wonderful hostess and coordinated our golf cart rental, transportation and massage. She made all the difference in our stay and I hope the hotel knows they're lucky to have her on staff. We stayed in Cacao (#8). It was adorable! It had a large patio with a stunning view. (A little couch or something else besides the two very low chairs would be a nice touch) I was a little caught off guard when we checked in to see zero closet or drawer space, but we made it work (they had hangers on hooks and spots to hang your swimwear and one luggage rack. For an average of $400 a night, this room was tiny, but the view was what you're paying for in my opinion. (We stayed a week so it was a bit tight for that long of a stay, but we managed) The shower in this room was the most unpleasant shower ever and I can't recall ever including the shower in a review. It felt like you were being waterboarded. Just awful. I'm not sure if all of the rooms have the same log/tree limb showerhead concept or just this room, but again, awful. I don't have high expectations on hotel showers, but this was ridiculous. So we got past the zero clothing space and waterboarding shower right away and loved the place! On our 2nd full day there, we woke up to find the island had a water supply issue from the mainland that was under repair. The water at the hotel was off. No showers, no washing your hands with running water. We asked what may have been another manager (a male) how long we could expect it to be out. He said about 30 minutes. This was Tuesday a.m. He completely lied to us about what was going on. We later found out that the water issue had been going on for a few days and they kept it to themselves "so the guests didn't worry". Had guests been made aware, perhaps they could have conserved the water. We certainly would have. We would have appreciated having a heads up things would be changing with the repairs happening. When we realized the water repair wasn't happening in half hour and we had been lied to about it, we spoke with Karina. My husband is in water maintenance such as this for a living so when she honestly told us of the situation, we finally had a reasonable way to frame our expectations on what to expect and how long it might take. She made all the difference in this situation and handled the entire situation with such grace! The hotel's three pools were also drained (water used to flush?) so we couldn't use the pools which is a large part of why we picked this property. This was not uncommon and we saw it at other hotels. Though Caracol - very close to Flamingo - didn't have a water issue during this time according to others who stayed there the same time we were (bigger water reserve). Some hotels had water time slots, some didn't. Most places had water to wash your hands - very few didn't. On this island, cell phones don't know well and it's very well known. Yet, the hotel decided to alert people via text as to the designated times the water would be on (7:00 a.m. - 9:-00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.) We obviously we didn't receive the text notifications about the water time slots. Perhaps a sign posted might have been a better option knowing guests don't have working cell phones? A note on your door? (We finally received WhatsApp notification when the water was fixed and back on) We were traveling with others who stayed somewhere else, so they had to work around our shower schedule a few evenings for our dinner plans and ideally we would have been out of the hotel for the evening in time to enjoy sunset cocktails and dinner. Before 8:00 or so. Again, not the end of the world, just a little frustrating, but we could tell they were doing their best. This lasted for two and a half full days. Some restaurants in town were not open due to it a few days in, but many spots were. Locals told us they didn't have water at home. It's an island so these things happen - but be prepared for how your hotel, wherever it may be, handles it and what your comfort level is. They did comp a few things for us in good faith due to the issues they had when we were there which we appreciated. The staff at the restaurant, bar, and throughout the whole property, were very friendly. Good drinks at the hotel, breakfasts were fine. The cerviche was outstanding. We had tacos here and were underwhelmed. The massages were divine, so be sure to book a spa treatment! What I really liked about it here was that there was no rush to save your beach chairs even when the property was sold out. And despite it being full, you wouldn't notice. Things are spread out and rooms aren't on top of each other. There were plenty of beach chairs/loungers throughout the property and it wasn't a beach club where non-guests were using hotel chairs. The property was quiet (and so peaceful in the evenings!) and a nice retreat from a day of exploring. We didn't see many children here - we saw a few but it's not a property that caters to kids. Do bring a flashlight if you're walking to/from the other spots down the beach. It's pitch black at night and a walk up a few large rocks to access the property and we saw a snake nearby at one point. You'll want to be sure you can see where you're going after a few margaritas! We can't tell if it was something from the hotel or not, but my husband ended up with a stomach issue while we were there that he's still dealing with. I can't help but wonder if the staff had access to hot water to wash their hands. We still had breakfast here as well as cocktails and lunch one day during the water outage. At the time we assumed the staff had hot water for hand washing, but we also were told the problem would be resolved in half hour, so our confidence is a little low in that department. My feelings on this property is very mixed. I don't blame the property for an island wide issued, so I would recommend this property to someone looking for a beautiful property with a quiet setting and stellar view. In fact, I recommended it to someone just this afternoon. If we return to lovely Holbox, we would try another property and mainly because I love experiencing new hotels. Perhaps Villa Flamingos will upgrade their water reservoir to make the island challenges a bit easier. Muchas gracias to Karina for her hospitality and to all the others who made our stay lovely. All in all, this is a fabulous property!…
We visited Isla Holbox to attend a wedding and we came with a group of 30+ friends. Half of us stayed at Villas Flamingoes and half of us stayed at Ser Casasandra. Overall, the property is very nice, but the rooms are mediocre for the price and there is no Wi-Fi. Unfortunately, the worst part about it is that most of my friends, including myself, got very sick one day from some thing we ate or drank. I normally wouldn’t point fingers at the hotel, but the only people that got sick out of our friend group stayed at Flamingoes - then we heard about other people getting sick each day while we were staying there. I told the hotel staff, but they didn’t offer to do anything about it. This ruined our trip and if I were to go back to Holbox, I would 100% stay at Ser Casasandra. Seemed like the nicest and safest place on the island.…
Great option for a family vacation - rich menu, breakfast included in the room price, they even managed to prepare porridge for a baby, though it was not in the menu. Has a great view to the sand walkway to the Mosquito beach - it is nice to have close access to it. 25 mins walking or 10 min by golf taxi-car to city centre. Some rooms are close to the road, but this does not bother at night as there is no traffic- it is nearly last hotel fro the town.
Just go and experience it….. If I have to return to one place in entire Yucatan it would be to Holbox and Villas Flamingos. It’s location is the best in the entire strip, as being far from the busy trail that goes along the beach making most hotel loungers suffering from constant traffic noise. Amazing staff, great rooms, nice restaurant, but there’s definitely something else here as the entire vibe is appealing and charming. Again just experience it…
In short a ok place but not worth the high price. Beach area is quiet so there is no disturbing music day or night, instead only your fellow visitors. Building are like rest around not sound isolated at all, you hear everyone and everything. Shower faucet is a log with some drill holes in it, impossible to wash long hair but cute if that's more important. Ok breakfast, a la carte style. Good lunch options and ok price compared to other beach places. Didn't try the dinner as the menu didn't appeal to us. Two adults only pools in front of one of buildings are mainly big bird baths. During our stay we didn't see any people going in due to all bird poop. Good location for walking to Punta Mosquito, both via water or shore. About 20min walk to center of town. WiFi only in reception and restaurant. …
The hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous and very well maintained. Its about a 20 minute walk from downtown Holbox, but the seclusion made it very relaxing. However, the service at Villas Flamingos was extremely lacking and every small request seemed like an inconvenience to the staff. On our first day we were told we couldn’t take a drink to go and sit in a beach chair by the water…they wanted us to sit at the very sterile restaurant (the beach bar is only open if it’s sunny apparently). Breakfast each morning was inconsistent and average. Some days we got bread and juice, and other days they didn’t even bring us a menu. When it came time to checkout, we were literally kicked out of our room 10 minutes early. I thought the staff had arrived to help carry our bags, but they were actually there with cleaning supplies. I say all of this because we spent our first two days in Holbox at another hotel (Hotel La Palapa) for half the price and the service was outstanding, and the food and drinks were some of the best. Villas Flamingos has great potential but not until they reevaluate their staff and loosen up a little. Consider spending your money elsewhere on the island.…
We initially stayed in a regular room (which we loved)but then moved to a Cielo at my sister-in-law's insistence,. Beautiful and luxurious! I loved the balcony overlooking the beach and bar. There was a jacuzzi on the 3rd floor which was great. The wedding was so much fun and the food and drinks delicious all week. When our cart didn't come to pick up up for an early morning ferry, the receptionist drove us in their golf cart to the ferry. Exceptional service all around
This hotel is truly one of a kind, everything is tailored to detail. The rooms are gorgeous along with the amenities and the food at the restaurant is delicious. I can’t rave enough about the staff, we booked all activities through their concierge Karina, and we were never disappointed. Everyone, absolutely everyone, was extremely nice and welcoming. The hospitality displayed in this hotel was unbelievable and we can’t wait to be back!! Thank you for the most incredible stay during our anniversary, it’s one we’ll never forget :)
Staying here for 5 nights to kick off our stay in Holbox, this was a little slice of heaven. It is a long way out of the way but that only adds to the tranquillity. the private beach means no one randomly walking through the resort. The Villas are amazing and the views from the Hot tubs are amazing. the beds are firm but as are the pillows but they are not the worst night sleep you'll have. The showers and taps are odd. the outdoor shower was much better than the inside shower as it was more than a trickle. the bar staff were attentive and the drinks were tasty and well priced. £5 for a Pina Colada hit the spot. The breakfasts were basic but more than enough to kickstart the day but the evening menu was fantastic. The Romantic couple's meal during the sunset was the perfect and worth every penny. This place has bikes you can use to get into town and back for which is a 5-minute ride Paddle boards are also available to make the most of the amazing water. The staff were great. the new front of house lady organised everything we wanted including whale shark swimming and added it the hotel cost which was very easy. It wasn't cheap but on the whole, but it was worth what we paid. definitely a 4 . 5 star experience…
While one of the main charms of Isla Holbox is that there really aren't crowds anywhere, the setting of Hotel Villas Flamingos being the next-to-last resort on the eastern end of the island make it particularly quiet and wonderful. The rooms and beds are amazing. Great showers. Beautiful waterfront where you can always find a chair and palapa for yourself. The staff are amazing and by your second day there, they know everyone in your party, how they like their eggs and coffee and treat you like family. It's also small enough that you'll meet new people from alll over the world with whom you obviously have something in common if you'll go through the trouble to find and travel to this beautiful island and hotel.
