RUN FOREST RUN! This place is only if you are a real mazohist! Hotel is a total failout, it is falling apart literally. Very few things are functional. Rooms are smelling bad, full of humidity, "clean" is a science fixon terminology for this people. Most of railings around the hotel are broken and presenting severe safety issue. Food is like the "Big Foot" no one ever saw it. There is no food, and if something is served it is generally unetable and expensive. I got tired writing this rewiew, nevertheless I could continue for hours and hours. FOLKS IT IS A S... HOLE!

If you are looking for a stalinist caribbean experience this is for you, buildings awful restaurant really awful( at least you understand why there are so many cats on the resort as they are the ones benefiting from the food) and the breakfast just makes my stomach turn thinking about it. The only positive is the snorkelling is good

On first arrival the resort is a bit of a shock - décor is tired, maintenance is lacking, our initial allocated room hadn't been cleaned. But if you are going for the diving this is excellent. The beach is also very good along past the resort and some couples we met compared this very favourably to Cayo Levisa and Cayo Jutias. Drinks in the beach bar were also a highlight and we enjoyed the camaraderie there and the sunsets. BUT, lots of people got sick here so be careful with the ice. Also, spray plenty of insect repellent for the sandflies at night. We were also careful at buffet time and stuck with the freshly cooked meat and avoided salads. Getting there was CUC30 each in a shared taxi from Vinales. Is isolated so good if you like this!

We went here in the outback of Cuba to go Scuba Diving. After a long trip from Havana, with a lot of very bumpy roads, we arrived with a beautiful sunset. The hotel is I think a kind of state owned hotel with a special flavor to it. It feels like an old school vacation resort (with recent accommodation) in which you could imagine how communist vacations could be organized. (I mean this as a plus BTW) It lies in the mid of a nature reservation and nature is really astonishing, for sure below the surface. Unspoiled reefs, nice swim throughs and a perfect night dive with huge Crabs. I was sorry only to have booked 3 nights (2 dive days). The food buffet was very good, however in the same theme every day. The bar was cheap and good! A bit special was the (non)collaboration between reception and dive center. You had to pay at the reception and book at the dive center and they did not always talk to one another. At the reception they told me there are only 2 dives a day while in reality they go for 3 to 4 depending on the interest. But hey, this is vacation!

We arrived a couple of hours ahead of the 4pm check in, getting a taxi from Vinales (4 hours). There is only one receptionist who was worked off her feet checking people in and out (a slow, officious process in Cuba at the best of times). Our room was not ready so at 4pm we were offered a sea view room at an extra 5.5 CUC per day supliment which we decided to do. When we got to the room we realised there were slatted shutters over 2/3 the window space with large gaps. This area is notorious for mosquitos so we went back to ask for a room change to a more modern cabina at the rear of the complex. This was a twin room, hardly worth the money but better than the first. The safe and the TV do not work - we told the receptionist who checked on a list and said, "They are faulty" with no hint of if they would be fixed (they were not). The tiles in the bathroom were cracked and the towels and floor stained. The bed linen and the pillows were also stained. The floor in the bedroom was gritty and dirty. We went for lunch (we paid full board in advance as there is nowhere else to eat here and we wanted to reduce the cash we were having to carry with us). There were only a few others in the dark and dingy, large dinning room (where all the shutters were closed so there is no natural light) the man running it was so incredibly unwelcoming, almost sending us away as we did not have a reservation! Then he allowed us to stay as he said we were only 2 people. The food was passable. There was a change of staff in the buffet restaurant during our 3 nights there and the woman in charge was far friendlier, and the food was better under her watch. We came here to go to the national park and to see nesting turtles but we could not get a taxi as the local one was broken. There were no hire cars here either as advertised. The receptionist kept trying for us and managed to get a taxi for us on our 2nd night. We paid 60 CUC between four of us for the taxi (we initially thought this was expensive but it was 5-6 hours and the taxi drives you with the guide inside the National Park to get to the nesting site) and 15 CUC per person to the National Park). We were very lucky and saw a green turtle who tried to nest but gave up as the site she had picked was too stoney and she could not remove the large stone from the hole she had dug. There are strict rules to protect the turtles which is really good as well. Whilst we waited to leave for the turtle watching our guide spent a lot of time on the phone finding us a driver for the next day so we could have a day trip in the National Park - if you can do this trip (60 CUC for the taxi and 15 CUC per person to the National Park) it is excellent, we saw iguana, bee hummingbird and crocodiles amongst other things. Note - the Hotel Maria la Gorda has no system to support it's guests with visiting the National Park which seems odd considering it is the only place to stay in the area - be prepared to keep asking the receptionist to contact a taxi for you and hopefully you will be lucky! We asked for beach towels and had to pay 5.5 CUC per towel - we have never had to do this anywhere else but it sums the place up. It is hugely overpriced, especially as they are threadbare, smelly and tatty. The service/facilities are extremely poor, so inferior to the wonderful casa particulars we have been staying in, you should get more for the money you pay. There is a large and very friendly cat population that live here which was a bonus/distraction though and the snorkeling just off the beach is amazing - teaming with colorful fish - we even saw an enormous barracuda. We saw far more, with incredible visibility, in the shallow waters by the beach than when we went on the snorkeling trip that is run by the dive centre.
