The food was really good. BUT, we stayed in 2 of the ground floor chalet-type rooms and they were damp. They smelled of damp as soon as you walked in and that smell permeated everywhere. Unfortunately, the bedding also smelled of damp and previous occupants sweat (pillows not changed or protected enough?) so that led to a very poor night's... More

Food was very nice better than you would expect from outside but more expensive than your average pub but much higher quality, staff very friendly and helpful and free wifi. No rooms available on the night we went but would have stayed over as looked very nice.

The only downside that it was noisy outside by the car park and road. The evening meal was very good but expensive. Very nice hotel. The room was standard but had everything needed. The Shower room was lovely. Breakfast in the hotel was very good with plenty of choices. Lovely to be able to speak Welsh with the staff. The... More

Wonderful to receive a review - even if of mixed views - from one of our very many Welsh-speaking guests. On the upside, we are delighted you enjoyed your room, en-suite shower, dinner - which we think is very competitively priced for the quantity and quality of food - breakfast, and chatting in Welsh with our very friendly and helpful... Actually this was better than average but not quite very good. First class food, we had the scallops and roast lamb and the service was quick and friendly. The dining room could do with a bit of a makeover to make it feel a bit less like a school dinner hall and the wine list didn't match the quality of... More

We are overjoyed you enjoyed our first-class food and our friendly, efficient service and that you think we are among the best in the area. We are disappointed you rated us less than excellent, given that our restaurant was re-decorated last winter to make it feel a little less formal - without sacrificing its Victorian character - and that we... First time at the Royal Sportsman and we were not disappointed. We were put in one of the courtyard rooms which were a good size and comfortable. A small seating area outside was a bonus. Hotel reception could not have been more helpful. Off road covered parking a real bonus given it was a rainy day. We eat at the... More

We are thrilled to hear your first stay and dining experience with us satisfied in every way! Our larger courtyard double/twin/family rooms - with en-suite bath/shower and small patio area - are particularly popular, reasonably priced, and also suitable for those with children, dogs and/or walking difficulties. Our reception team are surely among the most helpful in the whole area,... More

Nice to stay in a friendly place which was accommodating and happy to do food at 9pm. And the fish and chips was simply excellent. The single room was a bit small but perfectly adequate. I would definitely stay again.

We are delighted that, as a business guest to our partners the Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway, you would definitely be happy to stay and dine again like so many of your colleagues previously, from the chief inspector of railways to lifelong volunteers! We do our utmost to be friendly yet professional and we agree our Traditional Classics fish and... More

A typical old hotel but clean. We had a small double room which was small but nonetheless comfortable. Would of liked a bigger sink in the bathroom. Staff were very friendly and the meal in the evening was exceptional.

A very fair and succinct review. Our friendly staff offer an exceptional welcome and and good old-fashioned service - far from typical these days - and we are also rated 5-star for our cleanliness and 2 AA Rosette food. Our standard rooms are 3-star industry-rated size and comfortable, and we will eventually replace those smaller sinks (installed new just a... More

Nice hotel will stay again. Only fault there's no lift and was on the top floor which normally isn't a problem however I had to carry a lot of heavy equipment up to my room. Nice bar and restaurant with some really nice dishes available. Parking was a little difficult as there's limited spaces and was first come first served.

Thanks for this short and sweet review of your stay for a fishing trip. Even though we have no lift - almost impossible to fit into an altered Victorian building - our staff are more than happy to help with any luggage. Even better, special equipment for anglers, golfers, walkers and cyclists etc can be left in our secure, ground-floor... More

Good hotel, different room style for rooms 1-9 with back doors to patio. Great breakfast, very good quality English breakfast. Good location at the center of the town. Not enough spaces in the car park for all the rooms. Family room is big enough with one double and two single beds

Thanks so much for rating our central location, family Courtyard rooms, and full-cooked breakfast so highly! Being a former Victorian (1862) coaching hotel, we have probably never had enough room for all our guests' cars - though on-street parking nearby in the town is extremely safe - so we are very careful to advise everyone of this limited availability throughout...
