Set on the slopes of the Esperança Mountain, at just over 1 km from the town of Belmonte, the birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the Pousada Convento de Belmonte results from the renovation of the former Nossa Senhora da Esperança Convent dated 13th Century.Inside, the chapel and sacristy have been converted into a lounge and bar a good example of the harmonious blend of historical architecture and modern construction and comfort. The Pousada hotel has preserved the Monastery’s heritage intact, included amphitheatre architecture layout in the pine woods on the slopes of Esperança Mountain, and stunning landscape with views over the Cova da Beira region and Estrela’s Mountain. Guests can use this historic luxury hotel as a base for exploring the many historical monuments is the region, including the castle, the burial vault of the Cabral family, the Jewish Quarter, as well as the natural beauty and folk traditions of Serra da Estrela (Estrela´s Mountain), one of the Europe’s most important natural reserves.

The Pousada Convento de Belmonte is a complete hidden gem and offers a spectacular restaurant as well (wrote a separate review). We stayed in the Frei Octavio room which was incredibly spacious and just stunning. The whole Pousada was decorated well and kept true to it's original architecture with all of the stonework. There are plenty of nooks and sitting areas to escape to if you're looking to sit around and enjoy the hotels offerings. There is also a small bar on site, again completely made out of stone.
We enjoyed our breakfast which was a nice spread and the all of the staff were extremely polite and helpful to work with during our stay. I actually wish we had chosen to stay here longer than what we did as we thoroughly enjoyed it. There is pool onsite, we did not use it given it was late November but would be nice in the summer months.
If anything, the bathroom (shower specifically) in the Frei Octavio room could use an update. The bathroom was dark and shower was even darker and definitely a step up to get into. Otherwise the room was spectacular.

This pousada is a gem. If you’re looking for a relaxing comfortable historical place to stay near the Serra de Estrela mountains or a base from which to visit Monsanto, Sortelha, Trancoso....this is it.
Inside the building (a former convent) there are many cozy places to sit to read, play cards, sip a drink or just enjoy the ambiance.
The breakfast was good and plentiful buffet style in the area off the main dining room.
We enjoyed a lovely meal in the dining room both nights. Pricey but worth the splurge. They served their Crème brûlée in a stone. The cod was outstanding.
We stayed in a Superior Double room (Frei Gabriel) with a balcony that had a stunning view over the countryside and the Serra da Estrela mountain range. The room is large and the beds are comfortable with a nice bathroom.
Staff were gracious and warm.
Highly recommended

This hotel was amazing. We loved everything about it. The room was great, the breakfast outstanding and the location was perfect. It is located at the top of a steep street and feels a bit isolated at first. But once inside every view was beautiful and our three level room had everything we could possible need or want. Be sure to make sure you are not reserving this room if you have trouble with stairs. There are other lovely choices.

Disappointing at best, this restaurant's fare reminded me of country club dining where the place knows it has a trapped clientele and doesn't have to do much to create a dining experience that brings people back. The steak tasted dry and watery at the same time, none of the promised succulence. The wild boar was better, but only one of the four pieces was really rich and not dry and overcooked. The starter of wild mushrooms sauteed in herbs and olive oil was good, but nothing I haven't done in my own kitchen.
Our waiter was good, but the person in charge of wine forgot about us twice. Our second pour came after dinner was finished. He forgot about our port and another person eventually brought it to us out on the terrace where we escaped the noise of the dining room.
Unfortunately, the dining room was filled with children, which can distract from fine dining. You cannot fault a place for letting families dine; however, though much was made of our proof of vaccination, which I was glad of for covid safety, the dining room was filled with unvaxed kids.
Food, service, ambiance, all wanting. Sunset on the terrace with the silhouette of the Serra da Estrella almost salvaged the evening.

During breakfast buffet there was no one from the hotel staff present. Little children were touching food and utensils, then putting it back, dropping it on the floor…
My complaint was ignored, the receptionist said it is not there duty to educate children. That is correct, but it is their job to supervise that food and utensils are not contaminated and that guests enjoy a peaceful and healthy meal.
The manager never showed his face, unheard of in a 5 star hotel!!!

Tired hotel. Setting is beautiful, a bit of a convent feel but not much. Great terrace etc. But rooms feel like 1970s and are small with uncomfortable chairs. We chose the suite for singeing special and while it had a private patio it’s the one room with a super obstructed view of the valley…
The restaurant is good though pricey and the lay out is such that there are only two tables by the window! Staff is ok but didn’t bother to light the candle on our table. Overall, pretty underwhelming.

This converted monastery is away from it all! Each room is named for a friar and has a view of the surrounding countryside. The staff are sincere and kind. Breakfast buffet in the breakfast room has good selection. Make a reservation for dinner at the restaurant.

This place is in my top 10 hotels in the world. it is a beautifully restored convent set in the magnificent serra de estrella mountains of central Portugal, each room has a balcony the lovely bath. It is quiet and peaceful, and the staff are extremely kind and helpful as a bonus. It has a first class restaurant. It also has a pool and a cat which honored us by having her baby in front of us highly recommend this hotel

If you are looking for a quiet retreat this is your place. So many little books to sit in and read. It must have been fabulous when it was opened 20 years ago but is looking va little dated and the grounds need a little TLC however the staff are lovely and the room really comfortable.
The restaurant food was a little bland and heavy but typically Portuguese.
The breakfast was lovely.
Loved our stay here.

Beautiful hotel in an old stone building. Our room, the suite, was fantastic. Located at the old original building, large, tastefully decorated, and has a huge terrace with a view to the valley and the mountains. Just be aware there are stairs inside the room between the living room and the bedroom.
Dinners at the hotel’s restaurant were delicious.
Staff was friendly and cooperative.
