Maybe because we were so desperate for a break, maybe because the sun came out unexpectedly, or maybe because it was actually perfect, but when we caught a glimpse of the castle on our drive through Chianti and then pulled up (after negotiating a somewhat bumpy road!), our hearts soared.
It is a magical place, not at the very top of the highest hill, but nestled in a lovely valley and surrounded by the vineyards and olive groves typical of the region.
We booked the Aviici cottage, with its own terrace and hot-tub so our two girls had their own room and a warm place to 'swim' given that the pool is very cold in October!
When we arrived there were some other guests staying in the castle but they left the next day and we essentially had the whole place to ourselves. The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful and looked after us well, especially in the restaurant where we enjoyed some wonderful food and wine from the estate (our top reason for choosing this hotel was the 'farm-to-table' approach).
It's within easy distance of Siena and the whole of the Chianti highway. We went for a long walk around the estate and got some wonderful views across the valley.
Although we didn't use the pool, it was very well done – built into the old moat, and the surrounding gardens were well landscaped with sun beds and tables dotted around. We could easily imagine how lovely it would be in full summer.

Great stay at this beautiful agriturismo. A classic castello and the pictures online do not overpromise. We stayed at the cottage, but we visited other Dutch guests at the regular apartments and the apartments are of the same quality. The staff was helpful, the restaurant is of high quality and great Chianti towns, wineries and the city of Siena are only a short drive. I would recommend this agriturismo to everybody,

We booked a 4-night stay to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and loved every minute of it. We were give the Caterina di Medici room, which had its own lovely private terrace with really comfy rocking chairs to relax in. The room was lovely, although quite dark and the bed was very comfortable. It had both a bath and a shower in the bathroom. We were a little nervous of the very fine bone china cups and saucers for our complimentary teas! Some coffee would have been nice too.

Daniela and her team are superb, the service is excellent and nothing is too much trouble. Every time we made a request, it
was met with a smile and an ‘of course’. Daniela is most definitely the consummate hostess and her staff are equally helpful and obliging. Oh and a special mention for Thomaz for being so patient with us and taking some nice souvenir photos for us on our anniversary .... another of my requests!

We had been treated to a wine tasting by our family, which Daniela organised. Her presentation and knowledge were extremely interesting and entertaining and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. So if you stay there, try it, we highly recommend it!

The castle and grounds are stunning, being set on the top of a hill with views of chianti country. The swimming pool has been creatively inserted into the landscape and the bridge over it makes it picture perfect! We were a bit concerned on our arrival as the track up to the castle is rather rutted and bumpy and the drive up is somewhat difficult. We could see that there was erosion on the track due to water, presumably storm damage, so I imagine this is destined to be repaired at some point .... it definitely needs it!

All in all, we absolutely loved our stay and highly recommend it.

Perhaps we arrived at an off weekend because based on all the reviews we have read, this place seemed like a dream; however, we didn’t not get the experience that we anticipated. First we would like to caveat this post with the fact that we live in Italy and have had wonderful experiences across the country. The Castello was indeed lovely and the location was tucked away from the main road and very quaint. But other than the proximity to Siena, the experience of staying in a castle, and being in the midst of the Tuscan hillsides, the place itself left a lot to be desired, especially service and accommodations. We didn’t feel very welcomed and no one went the extra mile to ensure our comfort and we felt like we could have had a better and more intimate experience at another winery nearby.

Upon our arrival we were unceremoniously greeted by the receptionist - there was no promised tour of the grounds, no explanation about the wine tours or cooking classes. We tried booking one but were told to find the owner and ask her. We ended up not booking any for this trip. When we got to our room in the tower, the room that we stayed in was pretty small but the decor was lovely. The breakfast and the dinner were okay - there was nothing special about it and we felt like the waiters weren’t very welcoming or attentive. We really felt like the staff didn’t provide us with the personal touches we usually experience across other places in Italy and we will try to seek out this experience elsewhere on our return to Tuscany.

I succumbed to the charm described on the website of this promising address by reserving a room for 2 nights directly by telephone, without going through Booking.com or others.

The price was very high (540€ for 2 nights) but I wanted to treat myself. The reality was unfortunately different. Access road for 4x4 only, no place to drop suitcases at reception, room not very clean, no bottled water in the room, no high speed wifi as advertised, wet cushions on the chairs in the terrace, basic breakfast with fruit juice served in cardboard packs from the supermarket and to close it all, no hot water for the morning shower.

Finally, when I announced my intention to leave with irritation of course, I was told that my second canceled night would never be refunded.

In short, a dream promise turned into a nightmare at this property.

What an amazing place to stay and start the more magical trip to Italy. Barbara who was in charge of reception and guests was so helpful with arranging some fabulous meals and experiences such as wine tasting at the Castle itself and some fun spots near by.
The room was wonderful and romantic. The restaurant staff were all friendly and we had a great dinner our first night. Breakfast and lunch were great too! I highly recommend this venue !

The staff were pleasant and very helpful. The food was great. The country side was beautiful and it is about 30 minute drive to Siena. The only complaint I would have is that the showers need a bit more attention when cleaning but everything else was wonderful!!

My husband and I just returned from a trip where we stayed 3 nights in the cottage at Tornano. It was outstanding. The people there are helpful and incredibly kind, the food is unreal, the grounds are breathtakingly beautiful and you have everything you could want in property. They seem to have recently invested a ton of money in the property and future of the hotel as well. I’d count myself lucky to return one day.

The place si really nice...
BUT...
The kindness of the waiters is not enough to cover the needs of this location.
The place COULD be as it appears on the photo but..definitely it’s NOT!
Also the rooms (apartments) can easily be better and cleaner.

Sorry: there’s still much to do to gain 4stars rating !

Nonostante tutto l’aspettiamo ancora. La famiglia Selvolini e tutti i collaboratori.

We took a mixed age group family of 8 for a wine tasting at Tornano and it was everything you would want in a visit like that.

Daniela was the most wonderful host. Making us all feel welcome, giving us a passionate overview of the property and the area. She has lived her whole life in Chianti and her love for her home / region is really amazing.

The view from the tower is incredible, the history of the tasting room is fascinating and the wines and accompanying nibbles were delicious.

We all loved it and can’t thank Daniela enough. We will be back.

Dear Guest, Your parents can choose a Classic Room on the ground floor, just in front of the entrance of the Castle, or a Superior room on the first floor od the Castle. We do not suggest you to choose the Deluxe rooms that are in the Tower!! To access the restaurant and the parking area there are no extra stairs! We look forward to welcoming you and we will be please to accomodate your parents according to their needs. Kindest regards Dania Castello di Tornano
