Maybe because we were so desperate for a break, maybe because the sun came out unexpectedly, or maybe because it was actually perfect, but when we caught a glimpse of the castle on our drive through Chianti and then pulled up (after negotiating a somewhat bumpy road!), our hearts soared. It is a magical place, not at the very top of the highest hill, but nestled in a lovely valley and surrounded by the vineyards and olive groves typical of the region. We booked the Aviici cottage, with its own terrace and hot-tub so our two girls had their own room and a warm place to 'swim' given that the pool is very cold in October! When we arrived there were some other guests staying in the castle but they left the next day and we essentially had the whole place to ourselves. The owners and staff were very friendly and helpful and looked after us well, especially in the restaurant where we enjoyed some wonderful food and wine from the estate (our top reason for choosing this hotel was the 'farm-to-table' approach). It's within easy distance of Siena and the whole of the Chianti highway. We went for a long walk around the estate and got some wonderful views across the valley. Although we didn't use the pool, it was very well done – built into the old moat, and the surrounding gardens were well landscaped with sun beds and tables dotted around. We could easily imagine how lovely it would be in full summer.

We had planned to stay for 2 nights in this hotel, we ended up staying 5! The location is magnificent, with a stunning view on the surrounding hills. The castle is also beautiful, the rooms are clean, modern and tidy, and the restaurant was very good. Last but not least, the service was very friendly and kind. Would definitely recommend!

We booked a 4-night stay to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary and loved every minute of it. We were give the Caterina di Medici room, which had its own lovely private terrace with really comfy rocking chairs to relax in. The room was lovely, although quite dark and the bed was very comfortable. It had both a bath and a shower in the bathroom. We were a little nervous of the very fine bone china cups and saucers for our complimentary teas! Some coffee would have been nice too. Daniela and her team are superb, the service is excellent and nothing is too much trouble. Every time we made a request, it was met with a smile and an ‘of course’. Daniela is most definitely the consummate hostess and her staff are equally helpful and obliging. Oh and a special mention for Thomaz for being so patient with us and taking some nice souvenir photos for us on our anniversary .... another of my requests! We had been treated to a wine tasting by our family, which Daniela organised. Her presentation and knowledge were extremely interesting and entertaining and we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. So if you stay there, try it, we highly recommend it! The castle and grounds are stunning, being set on the top of a hill with views of chianti country. The swimming pool has been creatively inserted into the landscape and the bridge over it makes it picture perfect! We were a bit concerned on our arrival as the track up to the castle is rather rutted and bumpy and the drive up is somewhat difficult. We could see that there was erosion on the track due to water, presumably storm damage, so I imagine this is destined to be repaired at some point .... it definitely needs it! All in all, we absolutely loved our stay and highly recommend it.

Perhaps we arrived at an off weekend because based on all the reviews we have read, this place seemed like a dream; however, we didn’t not get the experience that we anticipated. First we would like to caveat this post with the fact that we live in Italy and have had wonderful experiences across the country. The Castello was indeed lovely and the location was tucked away from the main road and very quaint. But other than the proximity to Siena, the experience of staying in a castle, and being in the midst of the Tuscan hillsides, the place itself left a lot to be desired, especially service and accommodations. We didn’t feel very welcomed and no one went the extra mile to ensure our comfort and we felt like we could have had a better and more intimate experience at another winery nearby. Upon our arrival we were unceremoniously greeted by the receptionist - there was no promised tour of the grounds, no explanation about the wine tours or cooking classes. We tried booking one but were told to find the owner and ask her. We ended up not booking any for this trip. When we got to our room in the tower, the room that we stayed in was pretty small but the decor was lovely. The breakfast and the dinner were okay - there was nothing special about it and we felt like the waiters weren’t very welcoming or attentive. We really felt like the staff didn’t provide us with the personal touches we usually experience across other places in Italy and we will try to seek out this experience elsewhere on our return to Tuscany.

The place si really nice... BUT... The kindness of the waiters is not enough to cover the needs of this location. The place COULD be as it appears on the photo but..definitely it’s NOT! Also the rooms (apartments) can easily be better and cleaner. Sorry: there’s still much to do to gain 4stars rating !

Nonostante tutto l’aspettiamo ancora. La famiglia Selvolini e tutti i collaboratori.
