The imposing neoclassical mansion of Surou Melathron is situated in the picture-perfect district of Vaporia, in Ermoupolis. The colorful manors, built at the edge of the rocks right above the water, will remind you of Venice. This privileged view from our balconied rooms and common areas, is one of the many reasons to choose this special hideaway with the storied history. The Melathron residence dates back to 1857 and in 1988, was officially listed as a historic monument. The lobby, the Roof Garden and the 18 guest rooms – 10 of which face the sea –take their cues from the opulent 19th century era. They are furnished and decorated with elegance and style. Over the years the admirable guest house expanded in two buildings. The owners cautiously adapted Syrou Melathron to the needs of contemporary travelers. Nowadays the well-located, old-world-meets-new estate features also a number of refurbished rooms with a modern, more minimalistic touch, alongside the more classic ones, offering guests a rich palate of choices. The aristocratic lobby and the stellar Roof Garden where breakfast is served, are a true attraction of Ermoupolis! This is our story, in brief. By staying with us you’ll live the Syrou Melathron experience …first hand!

We stayed here for a couple of days. This is a classic, amazingly maintained hotel. They literally don't build them like this anymore. The ceilings alone are stunning.

The real treat is the location and the view. Breathtaking. We had a balcony room and waking up to the unobstructed water view was such a gift.

The room itself was nice. A sofa, desk and chair, comfy bed, powerful a/c, large standing closet, two nightstands with some storage, sufficient plugs, tons of bath and body stuff. I know this may sound strange, but I LOVED that the safe deposit box has a classic skeleton key. It totally matched the look of the hotel and reminded me of my childhood.

Breakfast was on the roof top with a stunning view. Plenty of selection. Used to be a buffet I assume but now the food area is manned by staff only, and you tell them what you want and they place it on your plate.

The bathroom is dated in its decor. It looks like late 70's early 80's Greece. I know because we had similar tile in our bathroom at our place, which we just recently redid. HOWEVER, the bathroom was spotless, water pressure was great and towels were plenty. I don't plan on spending much time in the bathroom anyway, so I was good with it.

I would stay here again in a heartbeat. The staff were friendly, it's super close to the action in the main town, and it was gorgeous.

A beautiful hotel on the best spot of Ermoupolis Syros, Vaporia.
Great View, friendly environment and clean rooms. You wake up, you walk 2 minutes and you’re swimming to the most beautiful sea of the island. Good value for money.

We spent 2 nights at this hotel located just outside the commercial centre of bustling Ermoupolis which is most definitely worth a visit. None of the excesses of neighbouring Mykonos here, rather an untouristy Greek town with an attractive waterfront and many fine buildings, even a charming opera house. The hotel is housed in a fine historic building converted into a hotel. Our room faced the sea and had a small balcony from which to enjoy the view. It was well furnished with a very comfortable bed; no complaints either about the shower room. My only issues were with the over- noisy air conditioning and the passing traffic outside during the night. It was a toss up between the two and consequently sleep quality was not the best for me.
Breakfast was very good, served on the roof terrace overlooking the sea. Staff were friendly and helpful.
For those visiting in the summer, just below the hotel there are swimming platforms with sun beds and a bar (excellent cocktails), a lovely spot for a dip in the Aegean after a busy day.

And what view … stunningly beautiful. The hotel is a magnificent neo classical mansion in a seriously commanding position overlooking the sea in the old town. Did I mention the view? Arguably the best position in the whole city.

We loved it. We booked a sea facing room which had a delightful little balcony to while away the hours watching the sea and sunset. Just a short walk below the hotel you can access the swimming area and swim below the cliff with amazing views all around you.

The hotel has what I would call character. The decor is traditional and not boutique, perhaps here and there it feels dated and could do with some freshening up … but it is quite grande. Maybe faded grandeur is a better description. Our sea front room had imposing high ceilings, a wonderful marble bathroom and lovely period touches like the marquetry floor and painted ceiling. And did I mention the view? It was breath taking.

Breakfast is served on a roof terrace, again with the wonderful view. Overall breakfast is decent, not great but decent enough.

I found our bed very comfortable and the bathroom lotions and potions beautiful. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would happily return, if for nothing else but that view that I will never forget.

We spent 5 days in a very nice and clean renovated establishment in the best location of Syros called “vaporia”. The interior was as if you were living in the older times and the view from the balcony was astonishing. The room was very clean and the personnel was very polite and friendly. The view from the terrace could compensate the adequate breakfast. We fully recommend.

We stayed at the Syrou Melathron with a group of friends and colleagues, who chose it based on the great reviews and fantastic views. We stayed in the main building and some people from our party stayed at the annex, which was less fancy and had a distinctive musty odor in the rooms. The rooms were rather small (even by European standards), but the wonderful views made up for it.

However, one morning before going to the beach and after specifically having requested for the room not to be cleaned (since it was our last day there), we came back in the room to find that not only it had been cleaned, but there were 100 euros missing from a bag that we had left in the room (the same thing happened to another member in our party, who stayed in the annex). When we explained this to the manager he told us that we were lying and proceeded by telling us he had no responsibility (he did not even ask the cleaning lady to see what she had to say!). And to think we had tipped the cleaning lady the day before!

We have traveled all over the world and to be robbed in our own country is somewhat disappointing. A good location and views just doesn't cut it, I'm sorry. You have to have better customer service.

My advice if you choose this hotel? BEWARE of the cleaning staff and ALWAYS keep your valuables and/or money with you at all times.

Syros was the third of 4 islands that we visited in the Cylades on our honeymoon (Mykonos, Naxos, and Santorini being the other 3) and was my personal favourite.A large reason for my falling in love with the island, and its capital Hermoupolis, is the Syrou Melathron. A restored 19th century mansion, built in a Venetian architectural style, the Melathron is located in the posh Vaporia district. It directly overlooks the bay (which you can actually swim in) and is mere minutes from the beautiful St. Nikolas church, Appolon Theatre (a miniature copy of La Scala in Milan), and the bustling Miaouli square. Our room was average in size, but beautifully decorated. It had high windows, doors and ceilings, intricate plaster mouldings, and fine antique furniture. The bathroom was large and well appointed. The hotel lobby and adjoining salons are tastefully decorated and conjure the splendour and elegance of that bygone era.During our visit, breakfast was served on the rooftop terrace, which provides a stunning view of the city, port and sea, by an actual waiter no buffet. Another nice touch was a plate of fruit awaiting us in our room on our arrival.Of limited capacity, the Melathron has rooms with balconies facing the sea (which we had) as well as rooms facing the back. The rooms facing the sea are noisier then the ones facing the back, so choose accordingly.Overall, the Syrou Melathron is a very sophisticated and luxurious small hotel in a wonderfully unconventional setting. Somewhat off the beaten path, it deserves to be discovered and experienced along with the many treasures the Island of Syros has to offer.

This hotel was superb value for money. Syros is a bit more off the beaten track than Mykonos/Santorini and well worth a visit if you're after something more authentically Greek. Ermoupolis is the capital of the Cyclades and as such quite a big town. But the atmoshpere is very relaxed and you will be sitting by the seaside having dinner, not realising it is almost midnight!

The hotel itself has different style rooms. We had the best one, which has a smallish balcony with gorgeous uninterrupted views of the ocean and town. The room was large with high ceilings. Its not very modern, but very clean and comfortable. The service was excellent.

Just below is the 'beach' aka concrete slab where you can go for a tan and take a dip, swimming in front of the city in crystal clear waters - highly recommended!

Also superb breakfast.

Excellent location and very friendly service. The main building is said to be renovated. We had a family room which was in another building. This was not renovated and it definitely created the need to go out of the room the soonest possible. The bathroom and toilet were old but also the furniture in the main room (not renovated thus not in a good condition) We ended up using the room to have a quick shower and rush out of the room. Excellent veranda for breakfast (not good breakfast, just the veranda).
