Ella Ecolodge is the best place to stay in Ella - a 5-minute walk from the centre of town but in a peaceful spot away from the raucous main road. The tree houses are wonderful, wooden and eco-friendly yet really comfortable with all mod cons and amazing balconies looking straight into the jungle. A delicious breakfast is served on your own balcony. Sampath, the owner, is really helpful and informative and organises tours too. We did a tea factory amd plantation tour which felt like a more authentic and immersive experience than most - we were the only visitors at the time, staff explained the process to us and no-one tried to sell us anything! Highly recommended place to stay.

Our booking was canceled last minute, very unprofessional. There was no obvious reason for this cancellation and we had to find other accommodation. Very disappointed, because we really wanted to stay in a tree house.

The owner, Sampath, is lovely. Can’t knock him and he will do anything to help you. Accommodation is very basic but fine for a couple of nights. Balcony is cool. However, if you get there when it’s raining then it’s not amazing. The treehouse has a tin roof so it’s insanely loud. You won’t get any sleep. Not really anyone’s fault, but something to be aware of. Great location though, quick walk from the town.

Location: 0/5 We arrived in to Ella via train and was excited to get to this fantastic looking lodge advertised 400m away from the station- it’s not. And it’s up a really long hill. It’s also advertised as ‘secluded’ - it’s surrounded by other hotels along the same road, and next to a construction site. Welcome: 2/5 We had a lovely text whilst we were on the train informing us of all of our options, giving us handy tips and hints for the week; lovely touch and really built excitement. It also offered a welcome meal- we confirmed this in reply! When we arrived no one was around (we had confirmed arrival time via text beforehand) , we aimlessly knocked on doors and shouted until eventually a guy made himself known, nice enough guy but he didn’t seem to know anything about food and struggled with English so we couldn’t rebook or explain. We quickly gave up and ended up going in to town. Amazing concept- 0 execution/ delivery! Facilities: 0/5 The lodge itself is not like any of the photos at all. It’s made out to be a luxurious eco lodge, and does have the price match that advertisement. It’s in fact a very very very basic hut. As mentioned above the location isn’t great, and the wooden terrace has blind which were broken and we were unable to open to the view... however I pull them aside and take a look- there was abandoned construction bits in the jungle anyways 🤷‍♀️ We only had enough toilet roll for one use- had to again hunt down staff as they disappear quickly! We booked a twin- it was a double on arrival The towels were damp and the bed and bedding was damp with only 1 very thin and hard ‘block’ pillow. The mosquito net was broken and fixed with plasters Water is cold everywhere and the shower is weak. On the last day we had no water at all and we spoke to the owner on the phone whilst it was off, who was RUDE & UNHELPFUL. He offered no solution just shrugged it off and was horrible over the phone to my friend.. when it finally came on it was brown in colour by which point we gave up and had to leave for our transfer unwashed and feeling grubby and having had an awful experience with the owner. Staff: 3/5 I’m going to be fair, The guy who was there was lovely. Little English so really couldn’t help us with much. but we are the visitors at the end of the day! He was super helpful on the last day walking us in to town to get cash to pay for the room when we realised we couldn’t pay by card So please do not take this review in reflection of him. I felt like the owner had just abandoned him there and offered him no support. Thank you for trying your best to help us!!!! THE OWNER IS HORRIBLE AND VERY UNHELPFUL: him alone is a reason to avoid this place completely.
