We were three honeymoon couples that spent four nights here. Everyone in the company was really impressed and satisfied with everything from the rooms, the service minded staff, the tasty food and the beautiful surroundings.

i can not tell how how happy we were to be at Matemwe lodge, wow - what a find and such an experience. This place has everything, from a beautiful story of how two sisters on their way to India found themselves in a once in a lifetime situation where the government was looking for foreigners to help build a...

My wife and I were here for 4 nights as part of a week away in Zanzibar. We were actually pretty sick the first day (nothing to do with the hotel) but it was a fantastic place to rest and recuperate watching the ocean with the ocean breeze. Even in your room you are at one with the sea. The...

We had two nights at Matemwe Lodge --- our only mistake in booking it was not staying longer. Martin, Rachel, Ross, and Gina and many other members of the staff went out of their way to ensure we had a fabulous stay. They managed a birthday cake with short notice, provided private dining and excursion options and all around made...

Perfect place to rest after 14 days travelling. Excellent staff, great food, quiet and comfortable room with great views. We also had a splendid massage which left us totally relaxed to enjoy the pools and the beach.

My wife and I added Matemwe Lodge at the last minute after staying in two other Asilia properties in Kenya. Getting to the resort from the Zanzibar airport is a cultural drive in itself and the village surrounding the property didn't make us want to venture out. However, the grounds and the accommodations were superb. We upgraded to a retreat...

We booked three days at the end of a safari at Matemwe Lodge so that we could relax and unwind and the resort truly delivered. Our bungalow was large, comfortable, and beautifully furnished. The best feature were the gorgeous wooden carved doors that opened directly to a private seating area directly on the Indian Ocean. Lying in a hammock while...

Perfect ending to our honeymoon. Relaxing, adventurous, and staff was excellent. Had a wonderful time and hope to return one day again. Would recommend to do a lot of the activities and check out stone town! Will miss the bush babies!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Vibrant yet relaxed Matemwe, one of the first lodges in Zanzibar, has perfected the tropical island experience. Perched on an outcrop overlooking a shallow coral fringed lagoon on the quieter northeast coast of Zanzibar, Matemwe’s peaceful location and famed relaxed atmosphere, makes it the ideal place to unwind. Guests quickly ease into the laid-back rhythm of island life, planning their day around the tides and their mood. The relaxed daily routines of Matemwe’s guests include enjoying fresh seafood, poolside cocktails, massages or simply hanging out in a hammock. The lodge has plenty on offer for the more active with superb diving and snorkeling off the renowned Mnembe Atoll; a highlight for many. Built from local materials and surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, each of the 12 spacious suites has a private veranda with a hammock and sofa and expansive views of the Indian Ocean with its constantly changing hues of blue. Here you can watch the fishermen head out every morning at dawn or listen to the songs of the village women as they harvest seaweed. The large bathrooms have both a deep bathtub and walk-in shower and all beds are enclosed by mosquito nets. The open-air restaurant sits just above the sea and has a tranquil lounge area with beautiful views of the palm fringed beach and gently rocking dhows. Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavours. Dinner offers a choice of main courses with fish, meat and vegetarian options. Matemwe has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar. ... more   less
