Ok, I said "almost" because it 'was' windy in the afternoons and it rained for an hour on one of the 5 days we were there. But it was the windy season.....so....other than that I can't give you one reason not to label Matemwe as Paradise. From the moment you sign in everyone introduces themselves and greets you daily by... More

My wife and I continued our Honeymoon from the Masai Mara in Kenya to Zanzibar, with Matemwe being our first stop. Because of a late flight, we arrived to Matemwe at 3:00 AM, though were greeted and given a quick run-down by the resident manager (sorry we forgot his name). All of the staff were fantastic, and we felt at... More

Following our 2-week safari adventure in Kenya and Tanzania, we stayed at Matemwe Lodge for 5 days. We were met by friendly and professional staff when we arrived in this tropical paradise (no exaggeration - this place is beautiful). Ross, the resort manager, and the rest of the staff greeted us personally and their warm welcome always made us feel... More

I stayed here with my family for 5 nights. The staff here are lovely, special mention to Hassan who I don't think I saw without a smile on his face. The managers made an effort to talk to us every day, there was a very personal feeling to the place. The rooms are large and roomy, all with excellent views... More

The staff at Matemwe really went out of their way for my husband and I on our honeymoon. Ross, the GM, and all of the staff are constantly greeting you, checking to see if you need anything. Excellent customer service. The villas are huge with ocean front porches with hammocks and benches. They are very private and peaceful. The room... More

Our family of 3 (me, wife, seven-year old son) spent four nights at the Beach House at Matemwe Lodge. Matemwe has 3 styles of rooms: villas, which are very luxe and best for a couple; bungalows, which are the closest to the beach and work for a small family, and the Beach House, which sleeps 6, is a bit separate... The family came to Matemwe Lodge for 4 nights, mainly to relax and do some diving. The food is great and I couldn't get enough of the French Toast for b'fast. Rooms are spacious and kept clean. Staff are very friendly and will do anything for you. The only slight problem for us was the wifi. It was very spasmodic... More

We spend 8 nights at Matemwe on our honeymoon and could not have wished for a more special and relaxing time. Our first 5 nights were in Matemwe Lodge, where we had our own private bungalow with plunge pool, a beautiful big bed under a Zanzibari thatched roof. We woke to the view of the local villagers out catching octopus... More

Lovely spacious rooms, very quiet and private. Staff were top notch. Chef Gilbert prepared fabulous meals and my only regret was that I didn't know he offered cooking sessions in time to sign up-would have loved to do that. When we left-early at 7:30 since we had to get to the airport on the other side of the island-we didn't... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Vibrant yet relaxed Matemwe, one of the first lodges in Zanzibar, has perfected the tropical island experience. Perched on an outcrop overlooking a shallow coral fringed lagoon on the quieter northeast coast of Zanzibar, Matemwe’s peaceful location and famed relaxed atmosphere, makes it the ideal place to unwind. Guests quickly ease into the laid-back rhythm of island life, planning their day around the tides and their mood. The relaxed daily routines of Matemwe’s guests include enjoying fresh seafood, poolside cocktails, massages or simply hanging out in a hammock. The lodge has plenty on offer for the more active with superb diving and snorkeling off the renowned Mnembe Atoll; a highlight for many. Built from local materials and surrounded by beautiful lush gardens, each of the 12 spacious suites has a private veranda with a hammock and sofa and expansive views of the Indian Ocean with its constantly changing hues of blue. Here you can watch the fishermen head out every morning at dawn or listen to the songs of the village women as they harvest seaweed. The large bathrooms have both a deep bathtub and walk-in shower and all beds are enclosed by mosquito nets. The open-air restaurant sits just above the sea and has a tranquil lounge area with beautiful views of the palm fringed beach and gently rocking dhows. Seafood is the specialty of the house, with all produce bought daily from the local markets. Lunch is a buffet offering a delicious mix of African and European flavours. Dinner offers a choice of main courses with fish, meat and vegetarian options. Matemwe has a multi-level swimming pool surrounded with lounge chairs overlooking the ocean. Freshly mixed cocktails are served at the poolside bar. ... more   less
