Sunshine Marine Lodge is a unique and remote property located right across from Mnemba island on the north-east coast of Zanzibar. It has a beautiful Swahili-style design and an amazing garden, which makes it the perfect paradise getaway. The hotel has 28 rooms in 8 bungalows, with truly spectacular views of the Indian Ocean, and surrounded by a tropical garden. The hotel has a large, ocean-front restaurant. Next to it is the pool area with sunbeds and 2 pristine pools- one of which is an infinity pool with a view right onto the ocean. Dive Point Zanzibar- a PADI 5 Star Resort certified diving center is located in the hotel. Mnemba Atoll, with its magnificent marine life, is only a 20 minute boat ride away from the hotel jetty.

The hotel in general consists of small constructions hidden within an abundant forest. You access your rooms via small dedicated tracks across a rich garden which is very well maintained (tress are cut, bougainvilliers in shape and sometimes forming gates, no wild grass). The rooms are very spacious and properly enlightened. Useful is the switch just on the bed head that triggers all the lights. The plumbing is recent and water pressure OK. A coffee/tea kit is provided, along with a safe. It is worth noting the room is made twice a day: that is not something you see often. In the evening, somebody comes to turn on the light that goes to your room. The only negative points are that 1) it is not possible to get full darkness in the room, so be mindful of that if you want to stay late in bed or have a nap and 2) both the entrance and terrace doors are slatted so both noise and light can easily pass through, that's why once will think twice before taking an ocean-facing room. The bar serves a large variety of alcohols. The range of cocktails is limited but they are well executed and you can always ask for the regular ones (even if not on the menu). The chef is working like magic to provide every day 2 starters of the day, 1 pasta of the day, 2 mains of the day (including 1 local of the day) and 2 desserts of the day, on top of the regular menu. It is worth noting the daily specials are different from lunch and dinner! The hotel is very quiet and secluded, it's a place of serenity. There are several rest areas disseminated ll over the hotel and you can get your own umbrella spot away from the crowd and the 2 pools, hidden in the plants. The service is professional and fast (except for the new staff who still needs training) and always starts with crackers hen it's drinking time or bread and corn garlic paste when it's meal time. The dive center is prime and proper: all regs are tagged and having their matching stands in the warehouse, same goes for the masks. Everything is branded for the dive center. There are 3 rinsing bins plus an additional pool, tanks are provided with a net and a boot, the crowd is well qualified and in large number, safety is not being compromised. The crew is super friendly and funny, yet professional. A perfect place to stay away and disconnect, as well as diving with convenience.

I’ve been returning to this hotel years after years as I find their superb location, beautiful rustic-chic rooms and lovely staff nothing but 5 stars. From the turnover of the rooms to the impeccable cleaning, everything is up to detail and you feel more like family than a guest at Sunshine Marine. During my last stay, a beautiful birthday dinner was carefully organized for my Mother with all the lovely staff singing in Swahili, that made her day truly memorable thank you! The dive center in the premises has great management and organization and all the equipment is well maintained. If you’re looking for understated luxury, well-manicured gardens and great service then you won’t be disappointed here!

Sunshine Marine lodge is a stunningly beautiful, green and lush hotel overlooking the famous island Mnemba — from which you can take a boat into the turquoise water and snorkel. The staff of Sunshine Marine Lodge are very kind and helpful, and will go out of their way to acommodate you and your needs. The room was spacious, had an open shower and a work desk. The bed was huge and slightly hard — which I've found is normal in Zanzibar. After the initial excitement over the room, my partner and I noticed the lack of air conditioning, looked at each other in confusion and asked each other; "Wasn't there supposed to be AC?". However, unfortunately no. Turned out, since we had a ocean-facing room, the evenings brought a steady wind through the doors facing the water and eliminated the need for the two fans that were in our room. This worked really well for our two-day stay. This hotel is definitely not for partying — nor is it for families with children. What I'm trying to say is, it's very calm. On the brink of boring; which is perfect for what we wanted: relaxation. During our stay, we had a fantastic massage, borrowed snorkelling gear from the neighbour diving school (for snorkelling in the local waters where we saw loads of fish, sea urchins and crabs), booked a snorkelling trip around Mnemba Island with a local guide and did Yoga. There's no beach by the hotel, but easy access into the water from a dock where fishermen sometimes go on land and have a break. When the tide is low, you can walk on the reef and see many interesting things between the rocks. You can even walk 30 minutes to the closest beach — or optionally take a cab / bus offered by the hotel to get there. My favourite thing about this hotel was the poolside overlooking the water and island. This felt like a magical moment for us; having stayed mostly at mid-range hotels up until Sunshine Marine Lodge. My least favourite thing was that during both nights around 05:00, we heard loud chatter and laughing from the local fishermen who were sitting by the dock and having the time of their lives. The staff seemed to know about this when I mentioned it, but didn't mention a solution or apolygy (which was ok). Food was alright — honestly not mind-blowing nor bad — just alright. Slightly small portions for a hungry guy like me, and perhaps a little pricy. That's my opinion and it's very much the same where ever you go in Zanzibar; small portions though expensive. I'll finish off on a positive note and add that this place really is incredible, situated in a garden of local, tropical plants and flowers with a view to kill for.

The resort is beautiful with spectacular ocean views from the very comfortable rooms and gorgeous grounds filled with tropical flowers and lush greenery. The shoreline is rocky but pool overlooks the water with plenty of palapas and lounging areas. Shuttle to sister Sunshine resort with beach runs every hour but we never felt the need to leave. Others seemed to enjoy snorkeling off the dock at the resort. Staff is wonderful - very friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was included with made to order items as well as a generous buffet of fresh baked items, cereals, and fruit. Lunch and dinner menus offered a variety of selections at reasonable prices which were all delicious. Our only slight disappointment was that the scuba diving, while on site, was not quite what we expected because I hadn't researched it well. The Mnemba island and surrounding area is not protected and is very heavily fished so the diving experience was focused on smaller sea life. If you're looking for an amazing Indian Ocean diving experience, we learned that Mafia island offers diving in a protected area which offers a wider variety of species in addition to the possibility of seeing whale sharks. The dive team was great, however, and equipment new and safe. Just crowded at each dive site with many divers. This trip we only dove one day then enjoyed the amazing Sunshine Marine Lodge! One hour drive from Stone Town for $40US was easily arranged.

Initially we booked the hotel for 3 nights, but decided on our FIRST day to reduce our stay - till MAX 2 days. Reasons: 1. Breakfast at the hotel is just a joke (see attached pictures). Everyday you can choose omelette / scrambled eggs / fluffy tasteless pancakes or tasteless “crepes”). I have a cow milk intolerance and I can’t have eggs either - so no breakfast for me. Except 2 pieces of mango or papaya or half a banana. No fresh brown bread - no options of jam - soy yogurt - decent muesli etc. 2. They say; free water refill but don’t tell you that this is only applicable when you walk all the way to the reception. We ordered the same water bottle in the restaurant and they charged us. 3. Prices in the restaurant for lunch and dinner are above EU standards (wayyyy to overpriced for what you get) - you’ll receive baby portions. We asked to add extra food on our plates twice!! 4. We booked a sea view villa (beautiful view!) - NO AC in the entire room and the fan behind our bed was to disgusting (see attached picture). 5. Because we were very unhappy about our booking & stay, we decided to inform the manager before checking out. He offered us a free massage. The girls are just lovely - but don’t expect a professional massage!! My husbands massages are better and more professional. So we were VERY happy we didn’t book any massage ($50 pp) CRAZY! 6. The road to the hotel is just terrible. One big dirt road. I’m pregnant so it wasn’t comfortable at all. Pretending you are a 4* hotel which exists for 12 years, but you don’t invest in a decent way to your hotel. Unbelievable. 7. We wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone who expects 4* service, good food and nice activities. Don’t look at the pictures on their website or booking.com. It isn’t like that in real life! However the garden of the hotel is beautiful in reality! >> the area of the hotel is undeveloped - nothing to do! No bars, other restaurants etc. You’re better of in Kendwa, Nungwi or Jambiani / Paje!

I stayed at the hotel as a short relaxing getaway, and the experience met all my expectations. The rooms are spacious, have all the amenities one needs. The view from the balcony of my room (room 9) was amazing, lush gardens and bright blue sea. They offer yoga, diving, snorkeling, a spa, reef walks, village walks or bike rides. The pool, bar and restaurant have a mesmerizing view on the famous Mnemba Island. Breakfast had many options and the food is delicious. The staff is friendly and helpful. thank you to the whole team for an amazing stay! I will definitely be back!

Staying at Sunshine Marine Lodge has been an amazing experience. It is located on the coast with a direct view to Mnemba Island and the sunrises are increasingly beautiful. The staff is very service minded and helpful. Tours and excursions can be arranged to any oocation as they have their own staff to taxi you around. Holidaying or attending a course while staying at Sunshine Marine Lodge is worth it.

The hotel was very decent with friendly staff, but the overall experience of spending one week in Zanzibar was quite disappointing. I guess it could be different if you plan a scuba diving trip, but if not, there is not much to do. Take your kindle or lots of books. The bed is good. You cannot walk around, there is not much to see in the neighborhood. You cannot swim in the ocean at least from this property or from the beach they provide access to. The food is decent, fixed menu type if you have half board. The wine is 23$ a bottle of Sauvignon, not great or lots of options. All in one the hotel does its best, but the experience is average. We concluded that we could have had a relaxing vacation in a more value for money destination.

Fantastic place for our honeymoon! Very cool rooms. You could not ask for a better place to learn to scuba dive. Hamisi was a great teacher and we had such a good experience. Great atmosphere and lots of places to hang out around the hotel. Very good food and free bike rentals

I just returned from an absolutely amazing time at Sunshine Marine Lodge. Everything about my experience was wonderful from the assistance provided via excellent communication leading up to my trip, to the great care that was provided throughout my time on both properties and at the Dive Center. I thoroughly enjoyed the relaxing nature of the lodge as well as the beach access I had at Sunshine Bay and walking down to the beach/launch area during low tide. My PADI course completion and fun dive trips were fabulous thanks to the fantastic professionals at the Dive Center. I was even able to have a sensational snorkeling adventure a short walking distance from the beach at Sunshine Bay. I couldn't believe all of the beautiful coral and sea life that lay just below the water line at low tide. I can't even begin to talk about the good because it was all so delicious. I was able to eat at both properties, and enjoyed all of my meals! The staff in both restaurants were very attentive and professional. The cleaning staff were also excellent, and took great care of the room and my needs throughout my stay. This was a trip that I will always treasure, and thankfully have LOTS of pictures that will allow me to remember it fondly. Asante sana for everything!
