5 days stay in family (8y and 10y) in a very large family suite with sea view. Staff is competent, available at any time and is still looking any arranegment if necessary. All inclusive formula is maybe teh best I ever experienced, considering restaurant opening time and quality of food. Nearby the hotel there is a scuba diving club (Scuba fish) with fernch speaking instructor. I warmly recommand this hotel

A medium-sized hotel with a family atmosphere and friendly staff. Located in a beautiful and well-kept garden right on the beach. The perfect place for an exotic vacation with a touch of luxury. Excellent and varied food and two lady managers caring about the comfort of every guest even the smallest. Spacious rooms with air conditioning and everything you need. If you are planning vacation in Zanzibar, only in ZANZIBAR QUEEN HOTEL.

An exceptionally nice hotel. Enter through the gate into a garden full of colour, and the plants and colours continue throughout the property and pool area. Only about 35 rooms so not too large. All rooms seem the same, just ground floor or deluxe sea view first floor. Our room was a good size, king bed, seating area in the room and on the balcony. Equipped with tea and coffee facilities, safe, fridge, good a/c and WiFi, toiletries in the bathroom etc. Immaculately clean and with plenty of storage space. Breakfast was a very good buffet selection. Choice of two juices, tea or coffee, several cereals with usually several warm dishes, sausages, bacon, beans, mixed vegetables a good range of fruit and cakes, breads etc. An egg station for plain or Spanish omelette, fried, scrambled or pancakes. Dinner was a three course menu choice changing daily. Always good choices, sea food obviously, prawns, fish ,lobster, with beef, chicken etc with rice pasta or chips. Always really well presented and tasty. Wine at $5.50 a glass or a not expensive $23 a bottle. With a gorgeous large pool and a lovely stretch of which sand beach allowing walks even at high tide a superb location completes a good choice.

What a gem! We just completed a wonderful 4 night stay here and loved every minute! The staff are so happy and friendly, the landscaping and hotel itself are lovely, rooms spacious and ours had a sea view on 1st floor (US friends : this refers to the floor above ground level) . Quiet and tranquil with both sunny and shady little hideaway spots dotted around the sparkling clean pool. White sand beach - see Mr Chips on the right at the foot of the steps to the beach to arrange a lovely few hours snorkel trip on Mnemba island ( I don’t recommend the “swim with the dolphins” part on the way- you might ask to skip that - seemed bonkers and dangerous, you will likely see them along the way anyway) The food was always excellent :amazing spread of everything and anything you could think of for breakfast ( and available til 11am) and dinners were yummy, very reasonably priced and offerings changed daily . We treated ourselves to a romantic dinner in a little private area overlooking the sea on our last night (order the seafood platter) and it was heaven! We also enjoyed the spa and both had really great, deep tissue massages from the 2 ladies that work the spa- highly recommend ( especially great after many hours bumping along on safari!) Took a yoga class a couple of mornings- a good mix of challenges and zen time. Namaste.

Nice location, unsensible management unfortunately, food mediocre, no sea view from restaurant, loud and unnecessary dance show during dinner - overall not a place I would recommend. Only rooms in first floor with a (partial) sea view. -

This was a great place to hang out for a few days and chill. The resort was right on the beach, which was great for walks and sunrises, and the pool area was fantastic. Breakfast was fantastic, such great variety and very well prepared. We had lunch and dinner at the place a couple of times, unfortunately the food wasn't a great as the breakfast. Most meals were fine, but fell the quality could have been a little better. We had a late flight in, so the kitchen was closed when we arrived, however as we had let the staff k ow about this, they arrange a for some snacks and fruit platter to be left in our room - which was very good. Wifi was good throughout the place - which was also a bonus.

We stayed at Zanzibar Queen from 25 February- 3 March. I’m going to break my review up starting with the positive, then the negative and end with my overall thoughts. Positives- Room: We stayed in a Garden view room. The room was spacious, incredibly clean, and looked as beautiful as the photos online. I loved that there was A/C and a ceiling fan, so we were able to keep cool whenever we were indoors. The bed was very comfortable and I had no issues sleeping through the night. I wish there were 2 pillows per side for more support, but I just used the smaller decorative pillow to prop it up a bit and was fine. I thought the toiletries provided in the bathroom were nice as well. Service: I’d give the service more than 5 stars if I could. The staff was very kind and helpful, and quite a few of them speak English well. The owner (or at least I think she was the owner) was a blonde Polish woman and she was polite and friendly and personally helped us when we had questions about the different tour offerings they had. The front desk staff, and the waiters at the restaurant were all great. Location: My partner and I loved how quiet it was here. I was nervous after I read a few reviews that mentioned that it was “boring,” but that was not my experience. In comparison to Nungwi, Matemwe is definitely a lot slower paced. But that’s what made the atmosphere so relaxing. We spent one day in Nungwi and it was more than enough for us. Our goal was to relax here, and that we did. It’s true there isn’t a lot in the surrounding area of the hotel, but that was fine. There were quite a few other guests, but it wasn’t crowded and I think that was because we came during the low season. What’s also great about Matemwe is that it isn’t super touristy, so there were less people trying to sell you things all the time. Of course you still had those people trying to sell you things or ask you for money, or your local independent tour operator on the beach, but it wasn’t as much as other areas as in Nungwi. If you like a bit more lively, party atmosphere, then you should probably stay elsewhere. But if you want a chill vibe with days spent relaxing by the pool and the beach, enjoying the spa, doing water sports, etc. Zanzibar Queen is a great place to stay. A few reviewers mentioned that there weren’t any surrounding restaurants, so you’re forced to eat at the restaurant only, but that also isn’t the case. There’s Bin Jaber that’s about a 300m away, about a 5 min walk on the beach. The food there was really good and we had a meal for 2 (2 entrees, 3 drinks) for 40,000 TSH ($17 USD) There were a few other restaurants further down on the beach, and I think one into the village nearby, but we didn’t try them. Food: We added the half board (breakfast and dinner) to our stay, and I would recommend adding this option. It was a great value for the money. Lunch wasn’t a big deal as we found restaurants outside or ate during our excursions. The dinner menu was Western and Swahili and you got to choose a starter, entree, and dessert. Drinks aren’t included in this package, but they aren’t terribly expensive. We had soft drinks, and they were about 6,000 or 8,000 TSH ($2.50-$3.50 USD). The dinner options were delicious. We had lamb, salt and pepper fish, pastas, and chicken and I’d give them all a solid 8.5/10. They also had a couple of special events once or twice a week where they had a special menu. One night there was a Swahili bbq by the pool with a live band, and the food was on point. Honestly this was my favorite meal during my time here. The night before we left, there was also another special buffet menu that included a station with Zanzibar pizza and an assortment of grilled meats and seafood with a acrobatic performance. These were included in half board as well, and I believe the price for these special events without board was $40 USD/pp. Atmosphere: I loved the atmosphere of the hotel, it felt like you were on a private island getaway. The gardens surrounding the property are pretty and lush, and well maintained. They also provide a lot of private areas outside to chill at. There are hammocks and hanging beds for you to relax on and they’re tucked away from the main pool area. But even the day beds by the pool are spaced out well with lots of shade and that you don’t feel like you’re on top of other guests. Cleanliness: The hotel was very clean from the grounds to the restaurant to the common areas and our room. Even the pool was kept pristine. Negatives- The biggest con is with the food here. Crazy, right? Because I just listed the food as a pro, here is why- First issue: My travel partner was Muslim and before we came, we researched hotels to ensure that the food served was halal. Zanzibar Queen was listed online as halal, so we felt good staying here. However that isn’t entirely the case. Aside from the bar (which we knew about going in as the hotel is European owned with a largely European clientele), there are a few dishes that were cooked with alcohol so he wasn’t able to enjoy everything on the menu. It was quite disappointing to have this experience in a Muslim majority country. Second issue: Breakfast can be improved. I feel like the options were just alright. They had fresh fruit (pretty great actually), yogurt, a handful of breads and pastries, porridge, cold cereal, waffles, an omelet station, and a buffet. The breads were a bit too sweet for my liking, even the croissant had a lot of sugar. The waffles weren’t warm and kinda hard. The porridge very super watery, more water than grains, so I passed on it. The buffet consisted of leftovers from dinner the night before. Which is fine! I’ve worked in the restaurant industry and it’s pretty standard for restaurants to reuse food. Not to mention that it’d be very expensive and wasteful if they didn’t. However, the buffet wasn’t presented the best in my opinion. The food looked dried out and could’ve been better kept over ice or in warming trays. I’m the days when my partner and I were here, we mainly stuck with yogurt, fruit, juice, tea, and maybe a bread or two. I would’ve liked a meat option for breakfast besides the buffet, like a chicken or turkey sausage. Minor things: It would’ve been nice to have an iron in the room, as some of my clothes were wrinkled, but I was able to steam my clothes with the shower. The extra pillow as mentioned above as well. Overall, our stay here overwhelmingly positive, and I’m glad we chose Zanzibar Queen. Given the opportunity, I would definitely stay here again!

Even after a thorough email exchange about whether the restaurant served Indian food, we had to experience that it was not. These cooks cannot prepare Indian curry. Unfortunately we had to drive a long way to come to this conclusion. The waiter was a bit arrogant when we had studied the menu and there was no food on the table whatsoever and came close. We had inquired via email for Indian vegetable and chicken curry, with naan bread and raita. He was acting strangely and said he would ask the kitchen if this was possible. When we told about the email traffic, he said I don't think it's possible. Moments later he came back, with that we could order a vegetable and chicken curry. But that there was no naan bread and no raita either. † When the curry arrived, which looked good but didn't smell Indian, we knew enough. This was regular curry that we could have had in our own hotel too. It came with a little white rice and dry salad. When we said this was not an Indian dish he just said Sorry! Then he arrived with a bowl of red sauce to spice up the food. The sauce made no difference. At the checkout we briefly told the manager that we were not satisfied, he would talk to the cook. Next time the food would be better, well....no thank you! We went back to our own hotel very disappointed.

Zanzibar Queen is located on a beautiful long strip of sand in Matemwe: LOCATION: I was not everywhere in Zanzibar but I can say from what I've heard from locals and other tourists I encountered during our trip that Matemwe has (according to the locals) the most beautiful beach in the whole of Zanzibar. Although Nungwi and Kendwa do not have the tides of the East Coast, they are very busy and vibrant with much going on during nighttime (parties etc.) and beach boys there can be overwhelming.. SO not the place to be for those looking for a relaxing idyllic holiday with undisturbed views on the ocean. Matemwe has also the advantage of being the closest to Mnemba Island, which is the best place in whole Zanzibar for snorkelling, diving and for seeing / swimming with the dolphins. There is even a sandbank there, highly recommended for a day trip. Matemwe itself has many Polish-run hotels so more Eastern European clientele in comparison to other places. But everything here seems very "pole pole" (slowly slowly in Swahili) and in no case loud or busy. All in all the vibe of the hotel and Matemwe is relaxing, never feels crowded and most importantly price-quality is one of the best in Zanzibar (I heard that other places in Zanzibar, especially in Paje, Nungwi and Kendwa) are overpriced so you really enjoy your stay in Zanzibar Queen for fair prices (Coconut water or Cola would cost around 2-3 $, compared to 4 -5 $ in the aforementioned places). That was also one of the main reasons why I highly rated this hotel: Affordability and fair prices in a hotel located in one of the sweetest and most relaxing spots of Zanzibar. Coming to the HOTEL itself, it is not small and the facilties available are just what you need. The rooms are spacy and they clean twice your room, the second time during dinner/before sleeping time, a very nice touch to find almost everywhere in Zanzibar. We did not try the pool. I thought water temperature was a bit high but it is part of "relaxation" as it seems to offer more the jaccuzi experience. Do not expect to swim more than 1-2 hrs per day in the beach, as the tides keep on coming in and back every 6 hrs. There is also a lot of sea urchins in the seaground which makes it very creepy. So make sure to swim during the highest tide, otherwise your legs will risk to hit the sea urchins while swimming. During low tide you can have a reef walk where you can see some locals fishing for octopus and spot starfishes, sea cucumbers.. It is better to ask some walking locals if it is ok to swim the whole way to the reef or not as it is 1,5 Km swim (or walk depending on the tide) and you do not wish to be stuck there if the tides suddenly comes in or goes away. As a rule of thumb, always wear your shoes (the hotel provides them for free so no need to take some with you either). The STAFF was very kind, some more than others. But all in all as everywhere in Zanzibar, very hospitable and kind. The WIFI was actually very good. We were worried from the reviews of this and all hotels in Zanzibar that internet connection is poor. However we found the internet connection in Zanzibar Queen to be very good. The hotel manager told us that they changed the provider too. So nothing to complain about, especially for those seeking to working remotely from Zanzibar Queen. The FOOD was good. I must say, it was not specal or fancy but for the price it was good. The good thing is the always changing dinner menu and the different choices every time (seafood, meat, vegetarian etc.). The breakfast was also good, ,many dishes of the buffet are typical Swahili food. It would have been nicer if the cover of the food plates of the buffet are not made of plastic (you barely see what is inside as the warm dish condensate the plastic cover). Also we would have wished if name tags are put next to each plate so that we would not need to ask everytime for the content of the dish. There is definitely a room of improvement on the gastronomic side but the quality was all in all good. This is not a complaint but rather a request for improvement :) What we also liked about Zanzibar Queen is that the manager team responded very quickly and considerably improved everytime we complained about something (i.e. too many bees on jam jars during breakfast, very little crab in the crab spaghetti we had for dinner). They listened to us and we felt rght away that they worked on it, so communication is key and the hotel is ready to make your stay the most enjoyable possible. ALL IN ALL, highly recommended hotel for those seeking for seaside relaxation with close distance to many water activities (reef walking, Mnemba Island, dolphins, sandbank, snorkelling etc.) for a very good price-service level (compared to other Zanzibari accomodations) with a kind staff working to make your stay the most enjoyable. I think 5 nights/5 full days are good time to combine relaxation with some day trips (spice island, Mnemba, snorkelling etc.) Thank you to Dominica and for the manager (the blond lady I forgot the name) for making our stay enjoyable and hope to see you next time.
