Essque Zalu Zanzibar has garnered high praise for its exceptional service, with guests frequently lauding the staff's professionalism and warmth. The spacious, well-appointed rooms offer breathtaking ocean views, though a few guests suggest some areas could benefit from maintenance. The hotel's serene atmosphere, marked by elegant decor, is often highlighted, as is its prime location near the sea and local attractions. While the amenities receive acclaim, particularly the diverse dining options, some guests feel the pricing could be more reflective of the value offered. Cleanliness is consistently commended across the hotel's facilities.

Inn is just amazing, the staff is very welcoming and at your service, the establishment is super clean and modern while keeping the authenticity of the country, we had a little wifi problem it was settled immediately, the all you can eat buffet is very decent, you even have a daily barbecue with meat and/or fish or chicken. Dessert: pancakes and ice cream every night + various desserts.

The pool is superb as shown in the pictures with magnificent sea views.
We left at the beginning of September there were not many people so there was the choice of deckchairs, moreover, it is a very quiet establishment, lots of couple and very few children.

Cleaning in the rooms is done every morning (bathroom + change of towels + floor washing in the whole room + bed made) and in the evening you come to prepare the room for the night, giving you bottles of water every day you will not miss this.

Atmosphere: day and evening you have music atmosphere, we loved it.

Nothing to say about this Pension, pay you the Award certainly, but it is well worth it.

Dedication to Deborah that we loved!

We stayed at this hotel for 10 days and had an excellent vacation. The rooms are very spacious and very well equipped. The staff is exceptional, very attentive and professional (A big thank you to Kheir for his kindness). The hotel is very well located, quiet for everyday life but you are 10 minutes walk from the town center of Nungwi. Don't hesitate to wander the streets of this town and return to the hotel by the seaside (be careful of tide times). Concerning the meals, the quality and freshness of the dishes is beyond doubt even if the buffet is not very diverse. It has the merit of not being re-served in another form the next day. Dinners are organized around the swimming pool, it is very pleasant.
The seawater swimming pool is aging but large enough and very pleasant. The setting of the hotel is exceptional and the view of the Indian Ocean is breathtaking.
I did not give this establishment a 5* because it is not normal to charge for water at the table (free but limited only in the rooms) when it is not drinkable on the tap. Internet access is free but very uncertain. Last point, not having a beach, we offer you a free shuttle to go to the beach of another hotel 20 minutes away but you will have to pay at least €10 per person and the duration is limited in time ( 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.).
To summarize, we recommend this establishment with our eyes closed. He has many more qualities than defects. Despite its few weak points, we would happily go back tomorrow but the holidays are over.
Another big thank you to the staff who are at the top.

My wife and I visited Zanzibar for the first time. We stayed in Stone Town and then visited Nungwi for 4 nights and stayed in the Garden View room at EsqueZalu Zanzibar. As soon as we entered we knew it was nothing like Stone Town Hotels. As soon as we stepped into the hotel, we were greeted with a glass of fresh juice and fruit. We arrived around 12pm and check in is usually at 2pm but our room was ready early and we were taken straight there.

We enjoyed our visit and would recommend the resort to others. All the employees we encountered were great and went above and beyond to help and assist. They engage in conversation and generally just make sure youre having an enjoyable time. It is a great location, they have the jetty restaurant which is at the end of the pier. Great for pictures and watching the sunset. They also offer transport both ways to Kendwa and Nungwi beach although we didn't use this. Breakfast and Dinner was provided as standard as buffets with grill and frying stations. Waffles, pancakes, eggs cooked fresh in front of you and they had live entertainment every night. Rooms are great, well cleaned and maintained. They offer a make up service and a turndown service so your room is cleaned twice a day and amenities are replaced twice a day including water. Overall, the hotel has a classy high end feel to it and the atmosphere reflects as such. It's a nice peaceful stay.

Behind the pool is the beach and ocean which can be enjoyed at low tides. At high tides the water does engulf this area so mid afternoon it cannot be used. However its nice to walk in the morning and at night time and has a peaceful atmosphere to it.

Thank you so much Mr. Sunil Perera the housekeeper for helping us in various situations. He always made sure that we were happy with everything. Because of him we felt that we were not alone here and that someone is behind us to help in whatever way.

With regards to your staff however, they are a credit to you. Every staff member we came across was so attentive and friendly. They were always on hand to help with whatever was needed. We can tell Sunil trained his team well to deliver Five Star service.

I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to come and I would come back here to stay again.

We arrived at the hotel and were greeted by a member of staff who immediately briefed us on all the items available in the hotel that were NOT part of our package. We weren’t told about any facilities other than the two restaurants and the spa. Kids club, gym wasn’t mentioned. Staff were disinterested and constantly chatting amongst themselves.
Overall the property is run-down and needs considerable investment and a revamp to get back to a 5 star standard which
I’m sure it once was.
During our stay, the staircase from the cliff top to the beach was washed away during high tide. Not surprising as it was completely dilapidated and dangerous to use before the incident.
Pros:
- lovely large pool
- lovely staff at Jetty restaurant: Melina and Steven as well as chef were a stand-out
- beautiful view from the pool area
- Baobab trees around the property and the vegetation in general is lush and lovely
- dinner options were good with a live grill station every night and a la carte available at the jetty
- Management are trying their best to make improvements on the spot which we much appreciated

Cons:
- breakfast was very sub-standard. Very limited bread selection, no cold cuts, no pork at all, no table service of any kind (not even coffee). Only filtered coffee available.
- rooms are spacious but quite tired. Tony flat screen TV. Ours had 7 channels but only 1 of them worked
- WiFi extremely poor throughout the premises
- pool furniture very aged, including the towels which were either stained or contained holes
- walkway to the Jetty restaurant seems on the unstable side - hopefully it’ll get refurbished soon before an accident happens
- overall the worst value for money we ever experienced at a 5 star hotel - nightly charges are simply not justifiable in the current state of the property.

Recommendations for improvement:
- Open the jetty restaurant only a few times a week to increase number of visitors and plan better for diners
- Offer some weekly activities such as dart tournaments or some sports options for guests
- Have special spa offers a few times a week so guests frequent the spa more often
- Have the kids club staff visit the kids around the pool or during breakfast time in the restaurant and offer them some activities like Henna, crab hunt, ping pong, pool games, bracelet making, palm leaf weaving
- offer a la Carte items during breakfast. Understandably due to Zalu being a boutique hotel it cannot offer as many choices as a larger hotel however a la carte options served at the table can make up for much of the reduced offering (please consider also pork bacon/ham/salami as in TUI Blue)

My husband and I spent a total of 11 nights at the Essque Zalu and had our perfect honeymoon.
Thank you again to Rahul, who was so kind in helping me to find my luggage, which was lost at the airport, as quickly as possible and bring it to the hotel. Although the hotel was not responsible for the loss, I was immediately provided with replacement clothes and offered to clean the clothes I was wearing. Thank you for this great service!
On the day of our departure, he also allowed us to use the room for longer.
The rooms are very large and in good condition. They were thoroughly cleaned at least once a day and prepared with mosquito nets in the evening. Our large bed was lovingly decorated with flowers every day 🥰
The food at the buffet was very varied and in the evening there were regularly new specialties that were freshly prepared on the grill.
The drinks at the bars were also very well prepared by the extremely friendly staff.
We would like to say a huge thank you to Sunil Perera, who regularly asked about our well-being and made sure that we lacked nothing. We were able to enjoy a carefree time and have absolutely no complaints.
We are already looking forward to coming back one day.
Thank you to the whole team!🙏

Beautiful hotel combining traditional design architecture with five-star accommodation. The Ocean Suite was superb, private, and with a sea view. We came for our honeymoon and left on cloud nine, feeing we'd had an extremely personal experience made possible by the staff, each of whom are, professional, willing to help, smiley, and with a great deal of heart!

Situated slightly east at the northern tip of the Island, it's not possible to see the sunset directly, however it more than makes up with peace and tranquillity, especially compared to hotels on the nearby busy beachfronts where the sunset can be seen, and which are accessible from the hotel. It has a great infinity pool, much larger than usual resort pools, and sunbathing beds overlooking the blissful turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean uninterrupted by anchored boats.

The food is EXCELLENT!! Well worth going half board. We stayed 11 nights, with so much choice avoiding any feeling of repetitiveness. We definitely left much healthier than we arrived! Al carte meals are also available on the romantic pier which were included in our package.

We really appreciated getting to know the most senior staff as well who were very open about how they strive to make the experience even better for everyone. For a chilled out, beautiful experience, in a gorgeous hotel, Essque Zalu is very highly recommended!

This hotel is beautiful, and located in the top location in Zanzibar for its nightlife, beaches, restaurants and bars. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The rooms are spacious and offer the essentials of a 5-star hotel. The pool and its sea view are the highlights of the property.

The hotel does not have an equipped beach as it is located on a rocky cliff, and the beach below, although you can swim if you wish, is subject to tides. Nevertheless, the hotel offers a free shuttle service to a resort in Kendwa, which has a beautiful beach where you can swim at any time.

Two points to note: the food needs more variety and international options, as having meat and vegetables with different spices every night feels slightly repetitive. On the other hand, the dessert buffet is diverse and delicious.
Secondly, it doesn't make sense to charge for the same bottles of water at dinner that are provided in abundance, free of charge, in the room every day.

Overall it has been a great experience and we would go back :) Thank you

Firstly and most importantly…!
A huge shoutout to Moureen, the hotel manager. This woman moved mountains on earth for us. I’m an artist and I left my sketchbook in Kilimanjaro (having just climbed the mountain).

I was so sad. Moureen did everything (italics) to help me get my sketchbook back.

In the end, it was their local artist Dullah Wise who retrieved my sketchbook from some 500miles away. *Another* legend. The resident artist who showed me the Zanzibar art of colorblocking. Follow his instagram A S A P (fellow artists)

Aside from incredible service throughout, the hotel itself is placed in a prime location. Their cleanliness is second to none, I particularly enjoyed the fresh fish options available each night and the location just can’t be beaten, folks.

So, stay at the Essque Zalu. But before you do. Can we give it one more time for Moureen and Dullah Wise!!!

This is a hotel where you feel respected as you receive friendly explanations and service from the time you check in.
The most impressive thing is that rooms are cleaned twice a day and mosquito nets are installed, and there is a wooden bridge and restaurant near the swimming pool or the beach inside the hotel, so it was nice to take pictures.
It's a great place to stay exclusively in a hotel for 3 days and 2 nights, swim, relax, and enjoy relaxation.
Breakfast is a buffet, lunch is a menu of your choice, and for dinner, you can go to the main hotel or a beach restaurant accessed by a wooden bridge. You have to make a reservation in advance for the beach restaurant, but the atmosphere and food are better than the main restaurant.

This is not a 5 star hotel; there are luxury tents on the safari circuit that provide better amenities. No electric outlets in the room compatible with iPhones or any 2pin devices. Meager toiletries, no direct access to the beach (need to take shuttle to nearby hotel and pay a fee) and their swimming pool is salt water which is not great for kids. The hotel is beautiful with the pier and other features and good tasting food. Some of the staff is very courteous and professional but not all. Overall needs an uplift both with amenities and service.
