The WORST hostel / guesthouse I have been in my whole life. And I may say that I've been to a lot of them. First: they didn't know that we we have booked. People looked at us as if we came from another world. The lady didn't even bothered to get up from her comfortable sofa to talk to us, and was speaking to us very unwilling. After a quick talk with her boss, she showed to us the WORST room I've seen: dirty bed clothes and a bathroom that I would be ashamed of if I were the owner of this guesthouse: no toilet cover, and everything was i s a very bas condition. As you could expect, we just left this horrible place. I don't recommend it. Don't you bother going there. They must to learn a lot how to own a guesthouse.
If you´re looking for a budget accommodation in Nungwi, James Guesthouse is a good option. It´s located about 2-3 minutes walk to the beach, close to good restaurants and diving schools. The guesthouse has private rooms (ensuite) and also dorms, and all of them have fans and mosquito nets. The staff was always very friendly. The place itself is simple, but it has what you need if you´re looking for being in a chilled area, next to the beach and for a good price.
Clean basic cheap place to stay in tourist hub where everything else is over priced. Good breakfast, extremely helpful staff who personally walked us to Turtle natural reservation and dhow building. Fire was lit in the evening, nothing was too much trouble. Snoring trip arranged easily by staff, who were more than helpful. One of the better budget places we have stayed in Zanzibar.
We booked the room 3 weeks in advance, sent the payment, passport scan and even credit card details. When we arrived "receptionist" said they are fully booked! He didn't even apologise, didn't help us and just left with backpacks day before NY Eve without any help! We tried to contact the guesthouse owner but he switched of the phone. We lost whole day on looking for the new place to stay as whole Nungwi was fully booked. Finally we found the room (twice more expensive). Lately we heard from the nearby hotel owners it's tipicaly for James Guesthouse to treat guests like this! Never book a room there!
I stayed at jame's in December last yr during a 4 days trip to Zanzibar. Hardly 5 mins walk from the beach, it is a reasonable place to stay if you are on tight budget. Jame's is a good fellow who used to make breakfast for the guests by himself each morning. Breakfast is also ok, given the price he charges for the rooms. A good call, if you intend staying for long on a small budget. Recommended.....
