Sandies is a great hotel in a great location. The food is consistently good, the included drinks are all better than expected (especially the evening cocktails), and the rooms are well-appointed. The spa was a special treat (and extremely well-priced), but the real star of the resort is the beach location.

The covered lounge chairs look out at the Indian Ocean completely unobstructed, and I simply can't imagine a better place to sit, read, and sip a drink all day long. Especially after a very busy safari itinerary, this is the perfect place to relax and recuperate.

The only real issue we had is that the rooms only had the European plugs whereas the mainland of Tanzania had Type G and Type D outlets, so we couldn't power our devices. The front desk didn't have any extra adapters, so we had to track one down in a local store. The different adapters aren't referenced anywhere, so I recommend you travel with a universal adapter if at all possible to be on the safe side!

This prime resort is very well run, GM is an Italian hotel profesional, who takes great care on delivering a 1st class product.
As an all incl, we were concerned of the standard, an as a Vegan, more so. I could not have been more pleasantly surprised at the quality.
We stayed in the 45m2 family room, and it was clean, well appointed and very comfortable, (with AC)
Pool and beach were stella, and this part of Zanzibar, while a little more occupied, has the best beaches and tides have way less impact.
If you want a stress free/trouble free resort, all incl with great staff and well run property, this is one that is hard to beat!

As always, I will be honest yet fair in my review. Admittedly, I was somewhat apprehensive while my shuttle approached the resort since I prematurely judged it to be in ill comparison to resorts I tend to favour. I therefor caution future guests not to judge the book by its cover, for the somewhat apparent delapidation of the structures are by no means an indication of the effort, hospitality and attention to every patron's comfort the staff exerts.

My intitial concern was soothed the moment that Chris, the resort manager, and his hostess received and welcomed me. A kindly porter carried my luggage to a superbly prepared garden suite which was decorated in welcoming with fresh local flowers and air-conditioning for my arrival (a trivial yet most appreciated luxury amid the suffocating heat on the island!).

The daily buffet was varied, well planned and catered to every dietary requirement and preference: International cuisine featured abound amid the local dishes, and South African wines, albeit commercial and not to the taste of the connoisseur, were easy drinking and sufficiently palatable.

The resort is well located with direct access to the beautiful Nungwi beach, within walking distance to beach bars, restaurants, saling excursion vendors
and a 20 minute walk to various ATMs.

I am compelled to mention the excellent entertainment offered every night at the resort. I had nary an inclination to seek night time entertainment elsewhere, since the resort provided sufficiently without exception. In addition, the resort barmen prepared sublime cocktails to compliment the evenings' events.

A sincere and special mention to Kabuga, the most gentle and tender soul I came across during my week long visit, who catered to my every bar refreshment need while residing at Sandie's Baobab: Kabuga, Zanzibar would be well blessed with more barmen, gentlemen and guest company such as yourself. Thank you for making my stay all the more pleasant!

Dear Nancy_hassan_eshra, we appreciate any feedback, both positive and negative as it will help us to improve our services. We would like to apologize for the experienced delay in our restaurant service and please rest assured that we are working with both the kitchen and F&B team to constantly enhance the experience. In the same context we would like to highlight that since reopening of the resort end July we have received very positive comments in regards to our food quality and did not come across any similar negative opinion. Moreover it would have been appreciated if you would have rated us at the end of your stay and not immediately on the first day as surely we had taken your points into consideration and the team had taken extra care of you and your family during the remaining 4 days. In regards to the hot water we are working with individual water heaters therefore the amount of hot water is limited. But we never had a similar comment before from other guests and it was checked by our maintenance team. For the Housekeeping we do service all our rooms daily between 9am and 3pm but again had made you priority after the first day of mentioning to us. Finally as much as we understand your frustration which was clearly the least of our intention and we apologize again, it would have also been nice if you would have considered in your rating all the additional amenities we had provided to make your stay comfortable, including a free room upgrade to accommodate you as the original booked room category was not suitable for a family of 3. We do hope that you enjoyed the rest of your holiday in the south of Zanzibar. In case travel brings you back to this part of the island we would be happy if you decide to stay at our resort again to show you the regular level of service that so many other guests have experienced before. Kind regards, Chris Resort Manager

Visiting with a Dar es Salaam based friend, Sandies was a new choice - one we were delighted with.

COVID-19 precautions were taken extremely seriously, from mask wearing and sanitisation stations, to strict regulations around food service, to touchless menus, to room cleans. The management and staff were all taking it very, very seriously, which was great to see.

Overall the experience was excellent for the price - a gorgeous beach, high quality rooms, great staff, and good food.

My husband and I had the most wonderful experience at Sandies when we first visited in March 2020 and to that extent we returned to Sandies in March 2021. Upon arrival we were welcomed by the most incredible staff and as return guests we were informed that our room had been upgraded. A beautiful, fresh plate of fruits and red wine awaited us in our room with a thoughtful "Welcome Back" message decorated on our bed. The attention to detail is something special. Chris, the lodge Manager, really runs a wonderful team of people. We genuinely cannot recommend Sandies enough. The food, the location, the evening activities, the staff, the rooms and the beach and views are all simply amazing. We will without a doubt be returning and plan on taking our 2 boys with next time. To Chris and the team, thank you once again for hosting us, thank you for your generosity and kindness. We absolutely loved our return visit and miss Sandies already ❤

Stayed four nights at the Sandies in November 2021 and just had a mediocre experience overall. We did the all-inclusive but after a day or so of drinking average mixed drinks out of scratched plastic cups it just started to feel cheap. The buffet style dining hall was good overall, but chasing flies off the salad bar for the fifth time was a little gross.

The AC in the rooms worked very well which I appreciated, though the condensation would just drip onto the floor and pool.

The entertainment at night was overall a little disappointing, and very loud if you're trying to sleep. The first night was one guy the keyboard playing strange piano covers of waltzes? Big Russian/German contingent at the resort so maybe that's what is hot these days and I should shut up. Found it staying loud late enough 2 of the 4 nights that we put in earplugs to sleep.

I have stayed here for 7 nights and although the resort is nice and the staff friendly I think guests should be aware of these small things; below is an email I have written to the management.
To the manager of the resort,

Dear Sir,

I booked a 7 night stay at your establishment between 1-8 September 2021.
At first I was impressed by the warm reception and friendly staff.
But soon I have started to notice signs of pettiness beyond imagination in an establishment pretending to be 4 star even by Zanzibar standards.
In my opinion the management of this establishment is very narrow minded and ignores how the customer could feel or be affected by their measures to either cut costs or increase revenue.
I will give a few examples:
There is no complimentary soap or the usual ‘hotel set’ containing a few needles and cotton in the rooms.
There are no ear buds.
There are no bathrobes in the bathroom.
When we asked why we had no bar fridge in the room we were offered one to rent for 22 USD for 5 days.
A kettle is 9 USD for 5 days.
An espresso coffee is 2 USD and it’s cold!
The staff are not trained to make coffee or to be customer centric!
Some (most) are just naturally friendly but they appear to be torn between rules and their natural tendency to help!
The cherry on top was this morning when I asked for a black filter coffee and a glass of water at 9.26 am and I was told that I can have water only after 10 o’clock …..really?
I think I gave you enough examples to work on. If you think it’s important enough. I,for one, won’t come back to your establishment to be treated like this! Not on an ‘all inclusive’ package anyway!
I am copying here my travel agent that booked my trip and I will write this same review on Trip Advisor! Thank you for taking the time to read this feedback email.
Regards, Dr Justin Gavanescu

Sandies an amazing location. We had paid for a superior room which was great, spacious and clean, housekeeping team worked hard and our room was cleaned every day, leaving fresh bottled water. Garden team work tirelessly keeping the grounds in pristine condition. Hotel needs to up its game in what is going to become a very increasing competitive market as tourism takes off. We understand that times have been hard due to covid, sun beds and umbrellas, there are not enough and some needing attention, by the end of the stay is was nearly impossible to get a sun bed after 8am, there is plenty of space around the pool for additional beds. A number of pool tiles are cracked and need replacing. The all inclusive drinks policy is rather strange no specialist coffees, cocktails or spirits and until after 6.00pm. The restaurant manager and assistant manager worked extremely hard, but a number of the staff could have paid more attention to detail, we experienced waiting a very long time for drinks at the table or table to be relaid, when requesting drinks they often seemed to get distracted and completely forgot. A number of the cups used for tea and coffee are chipped and desperately need replacing, not great from a hygiene point of view. The food certainly needs improving, breakfast was good, along with provision of freshly cooked pasta at lunch or dinner. During the evening meal the starters, bruschetta with chopped tomatoes and garlic or smashed avocado, small squares of pizza were the same every evening. The animation team worked hard a very special mention to Saleh who took the stretching class along with the water gym, which he made extremely fun, a very talented young man, who spoke a number of languages and made the time to walk around speaking to visitors and checking all was good, would certainly be an asset to work in hotel management, we certainly never met the general manager. The security guards working at the hotel were extremely vigilant and gave you the feeling of being secure. The village walk is very much worth doing, but please hotel make it known that you will be visiting the local school, in order that guests may take money with them to donate to the school, also person escorting on village walk to be able to give information of village life, so much more could have been made on this walk. The African dancers and African Acrobats during evening entertainment were excellent.

Stayed here for 2 nights and it was amazing. Staff are very nice and attentive. Resort is well maintained with beautiful Baobab trees sprinkled throughout the facility. Location is perfect on Nungwi beach, a couple small soft shell crabs sightings on the clear white sand. The resort has a separate restaurant on the beach with exclusive menu. Lobster dinner on the beach sand at night with candle lit. Room was clean, had AC, and the water was always hot. Wish I could have stayed longer but I'll be back here sooner then later for sure. This resort is where you go to escape and relax.
