Lake View, Great View
NUMBER OF ROOMS
We stayed three nights in total in the double en-suite cabin with a fantastic view of the lake and two great seats to enjoy the view from. Room had a small fridge too which was useful to store our stuff while using main kitchen. Found latter well equipped - particularly liked the constant hot water boiler for tea/coffee. Nice plates, bowls etc. Fantastic large comfortable lounge. Used the laundry no problem. Staff friendly and helpful. No noise issues during our stay. Easy walking access to town. Good parking. Would definitely recommend and would stay again.
I started off started off staying for 1 night and kept on extending my stay there and ended up staying 2 weeks. Best hostel experience I have ever had. The staff knew people by name and were always accommodating. The room was very clean and the kitchen was always very clean. Nice to be able to use the kitchen late at night. The view of the lake and mountains is amazing. Very close to town center and to walks and hikes around such as Roy's Peak. There is a shuttle that comes to pick you up to do these hikes as well. I met awesome people there that I still talk with to this day. I highly highly recommend staying here.
After a mixed experience at the YHA last time, I tried Wanaka Bakpaka. I won’t stay again, even if it is a great deal within the city. There are some great things the hostel has going for it. It’s a converted home so it’s very cozy, view over Lake Wanaka is nice, and it is away from the craziness of the CBD. Generally it’s quiet around the hostel as well. And decent on site parking with a 15 minute walk to downtown. Unfortunately I didn’t have a great experience. The hostel is not as cute IRL as it is online, the bunk bed in my room looked like it was made in high school shop class. Some rooms are cutely decorated but many aren’t and look old. My room had a decent en suite which was a nice feature. My first impression with Lara wasn’t great as well. She was covering while the owner was out and she was horribly rude because she preferred to use her work hours for sunbathing than working. Others in my room commented on that too. The owner, who I met later, was nice but sadly things didn’t start off well. The crowd staying here is very young. I haven’t stayed at a hostel before where I watched people treat property and common items with such disrespect. Kitchen is usually filthy and storage space in fridges is very limited. WiFi here is also very poor but better within common areas. Also, hostel is loud at night, especially around some of the dorms. Can go until 12am - 3am. Female dorms do not exist but can try to be accommodated on request. I did request this and despite the confirmation I would have females all but one night, there was a mixup and I was put with two older gentlemen in a small dorm. This was a major issue for me. Owner apologized for the error but couldn’t move me until the next day, and unfortunately by then, my experience was too negative and I left a day early. I’m sure people will poop all over this but let me assure you, I’ve stayed in hostels around the world. I have realistic expectations and have seen and experienced a lot. This place was not a fit for me but does have some positivities that could work for others. Rooms are affordable and clearly they are booked almost every night so hopefully mine is an isolated incident. That said I personally would not recommend it.…
I stayed in a twin room with my friend for 2 nights. It was lovely and clean with bedding and a towel provided. It was nice and quiet in the evening but with a friendly vibe to it in the daytime. One of the nicest hostels I've stayed in so far in NZ and a good price. Bike rentals super cheap though one of the bikes had a bit of a deflated tyre so check them over before you set off. A couple of routes to choose from in the guide book too.
We recently stayed at Wanaka Bakpaka for 2 nights and were very impressed! We were greeted with a very warm welcome and were shown to our room which had been upgraded from a 4 bed dorm to a twin room! This probably helped at the time of year we went but we were so pleasantly surprised. The hostel staff were so helpful our entire stay. The location was perfect, just a short walk into the centre. The hostel was clean and it was good that showers and bathrooms were allocated to 3 bedrooms so that not too many people shared the same bathroom facilities. The kitchen had plenty of cooking facilities for everyone to share and the common area was huge and homely, so lots of places to sit and chill. The only downside was that the long termers who were working in Wanaka did sometimes come across as intimidating in their cliques so we didn’t really socialise with others there. Overall would highly recommend!…
